Rancio


A tasting term used for a distinctive style of wine, often fortified or vin doux naturel, achieved by deliberately exposing it to oxygen and/or heat. Such wines are typicially characterised by an additional and powerful smell reminiscent of overripe fruit, nuts, and melted or even rancid butter.

A tasting term used for a distinctive style of wine, often fortified or vin doux naturel, achieved by deliberately maderizing the wine by exposing it to oxygen and/or heat. It is not a negative trait, but characteristic of these wine styles.

The word rancio has the same root as ‘rancid’ and the wines that result have an additional and powerful smell reminiscent of overripe fruit, nuts, and melted or even rancid butter.

Wines that commonly displays rancio character can include: wines traditionally stored in barrels in hot store houses (Australian Topaque and Muscat), or under the rafters in a hot climate (Madeira or Rousillon’s vin doux naturels), or in glass demijohns left out of doors and subjected ot the changing temperatures of night and day, as in some parts of Spain.

Cappellano Barbera Gabutti 2019

Barbera | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

The 2019 Barbera d'Alba Gabutti is a delicate, perfumed Barbera with a Nebbiolo-like feeling of mid-weight structure. Succulent dark cherry fruit, tobacco, spice, leather, menthol and blood orange are pushed forward. A kick of bright acids on the finish keeps things vibrant. Opens with juicy crunchy fruit that takes just a little while to settle in. More immediately overt than the others. There’s a build in tannin here that when you relate it back to the vineyard location near Rugien and listen to Anne Parents thoughts on Pommard makes sense. A certain savoury meatiness comes through. You can see this will need a little more time in bottle to really come together. Excellent depth and length of fruit as seems to be the case with all of Thierry’s wines.

The 2012 Viña Tondonia Reserva comes from a very dry year, with 25% less rain than the average (at the time), resulting in lower yields of very healthy grapes that delivered wines with nice balance between alcohol and polyphenols, making it very apt for the aging in barrel. It had a slightly longer élevage in barrel, six years. The wine is aromatic with a developed profile, spicy and tertiary (forest floor, a touch of brick dust and iodine), complex and nuanced.
