A tasting term used for a distinctive style of wine, often fortified or vin doux naturel, achieved by deliberately maderizing the wine by exposing it to oxygen and/or heat. It is not a negative trait, but characteristic of these wine styles.

The word rancio has the same root as ‘rancid’ and the wines that result have an additional and powerful smell reminiscent of overripe fruit, nuts, and melted or even rancid butter.

Wines that commonly displays rancio character can include: wines traditionally stored in barrels in hot store houses (Australian Topaque and Muscat), or under the rafters in a hot climate (Madeira or Rousillon’s vin doux naturels), or in glass demijohns left out of doors and subjected ot the changing temperatures of night and day, as in some parts of Spain.

Feeling Thirsty?

Yet another successful 'Costa Bassa' from Fay! Thoughts read pretty much the same as for the delicious 2019. Loads of pleasure here, the harmony, and, the inviting, drink me, nature of the wine is just the beginning. It really has everything in all the right places.Excellent. Got that whole alpine thing going on. Excellent weight and shape to it. Playful dusty chalky slightly chewy tannins with fine boned acid. Sour cherry with licorice a hint of smoke, resinous. Roagna Barbaresco Crichët Pajè 2013

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

This! I can’t think of a better wine to end this tasting with than with the 2013 Barbaresco Crichët Pajé. Tasted from magnum, the 2013 dazzles with its combination of explosive energy and sheer elegance. Rose petals, cinnamon, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper are some of the many notes that emerge from this wonderfully complex, dynamic Barbaresco. Quite simply, the 2013 is unforgettable. Cappellano Barbera Gabutti 2015

Barbera | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

Another great Piemonte vine, another great aspect of the Gabutti vineyards. A classic Barbera, feminine in its generosity and masculine in its posture. It is characterised by a distinctive acidity which sustains softness and fruit, and delivers a vibrating tasting experience until the long finale. The wine gives the impression of partial incompleteness, of continuous change; like all the red wines with strong character it takes its time to unveil its potentiality, character, and pleasures.
