Garrigue

Garigue or phrygana is a type of low, soft-leaved scrubland ecoregion and plant community in the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub biome. It is found on limestone soils in southern France and around the Mediterranean Basin, generally near the seacoast where the moderated Mediterranean climate provides annual summer drought.[1][2][3] The term has also found its way into haute cuisine, suggestive of the resinous flavours of a garigue shrubland. Viognier is such a unique variety! The perfume intoxicating, the texture caressing! A single-vineyard offering from the Coteau de Chéry, one of the appellation’s most valued terroirs. Revisited in bottle, the 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots is already very expressive, bursting with aromas of plums and raspberries mingled with peonies, rose petals, sweet spices and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, melting and sensual, it's charming and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit and a long, saline finish. It's so giving out of the gates that it wouldn't be a crime to open a bottle now. Drink 2021-2039William Kelley, 94 PointsAnne Parent describes 'Les Épenots' as

Ample depth covering a very fine structure.Vines in the direction of Nolay, bought in 2014 – 2015 was the first vintage – from an 8 ha domaine shared with Sauzet – about 6km from domaine, vines on hillsides, over 400m with plenty of clay in this soil. Harvested about a week later than the vines around Chassagne – patience is a

Tasting this in Apr 2024 it showed sophistication refinement of tannin, stunning flow and harmony. Deeply layered and delicious. A note differing to Guitiérrez' and perhaps a factor of being some 2 years older when tasted. Delicious. The 2018 Roda I is in line with the other 2018s, lower alcohol, grainier tannins and a little more earthy rusticity that to me translates into more character and less polished wines. This was a blend of 92% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano and 2% Garnacha from 30+-y
