Italian for single vineyard. Each Contrada will have its own name. Plural = Contrade. Etna’s Contrade have certainly raised knowledge of the term. Each year a tasting, the Contrade dell’Etna, is held to taste the current releases from Etna. The term is used throughout Italy.

Contrade names you might have heard of from Etna: Rampante, Guardiola, Feudo di Mezzo, Acuria, Sciaronuova, Calderara, and Rivaggi. Moving north to Veneto, Gini’s top Soave is from the Contrada “Salverenza”.

Chardonnay | France, Burgundy

A classic Chablis nose of seashore, iodine, cool apple and an array of citrus nuances leads to delicious, intense and chiseled middle weight flavors that display excellent depth and persistence on the balanced and refreshingly dry finale. For my taste this excellent effort is still improving and a wine that offers premier cru quality. In a word, impressive. June 2021 Drink 2024+Allen Meadows, Burghound

Vajra Barolo ‘Albe’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo (sub-region)

The 2019 Albe is looking good with loads of energy. There's a nice build in density and quality tannins that are layered and ripe with excellent weight. Darker fruits. It’s good to see this looking so vibrant, flowing and fun. Delicious. Baking spice, woody herb & lick of licorice very good. Full of energy. Great drinking. This is certainly one of the most popular and versatile wines made in Italy, and deservedly so. The well-priced G.D. Vajra 2019 Barolo Albe shows some ripe fruit

“The 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella is a sleeping giant, darkly alluring with dried violets, dusty black currants, shaved cedar and lifting hints of mint. This is sleek and cool-toned in feel—lifted yet intense and savoury to the core, with masses of mineral-tinged dark red fruits and balsamic tones carried across a core of zesty acidity… This is just a baby today and in need of serious cellaring, yet the potential is off the charts.
