Ansitz Waldgries Südtiroler Weissburgunder Riserva ‘ITOS’ 2020

Weissburgunder | Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

What he achieves by a combo of half vinified in stainless steel and half the ferments in barrel, is the ideal melding of the racy with the complex and textured. A pretty flash Weissburgunder AKA Pinot Bianco! Excellent drinking. A layer of that shroomy, wet wool earthy funk I often see, and enjoy in high acid whites. White flowers perfume. Ripe white grapefruit. Counterpointed with a little stonefruit, fresh and zippy. Chalky acid with a dusting of phenolics adds cleansing grip. Superb long

Delicious spiced, pear, perfumed with flowers, almost flinty, lovely phenolics, textural and fine, long and even, gentle, flowing, resolved. Savoury. Subtle layered intrigue. Fine acid profile. Bloody fun wine. The last time I had a Chasselas it was from an old planting in Victoria the origin of which I can’t remember. I ended up buying cases of it as a cleanskin for personal consumption. Its memory prompted me to try this wine from the “vineyard in the sky”. From the incredibl

Domaine de Beudon Petite Arvine AOC Valais 2020

White Blend | Valais, Switzeland

Lovely perfume and lift, textural almost Viognier & Traminer-seque. Big slippery oily phenolic texture. Exceptional perfume spice, marzipan, quince and fejoa, jasmine white flowers, great intensity. Very good. Delicacy with intensity and intrigue! A variety rarely seen outside Valais, Switzerland. Its standing demonstrated by attempts from Angelo Gaja and Michel Chapoutier to work with this somewhat belligerent grape to grow. From Valais in Switzerland and one of the world’s

The first iteration of this wine I drank was the 2018, a seriously impressive wine. It wasn't your grandmother's Sherry and nor is the 2021. Made in the style of bygone regional traditions, the De La Riva Vino de Pasto is a non-fortified aromatic table wine made with Palomino from the El Notario plot in pago Macharnudo. It's personality is influenced by a period of time in lightly ullaged barrel under flor Luis Guitiérrez comments that from 2019 Willy and Ramiro have tried to reduce the e

“The 2021 Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes is lovely, unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, green apple, freshly baked bread and subtle hints of nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, ample and racy, its textural attack segues into a layered, concentrated mid-palate, concluding with a saline finish. The inherent plenitude of the site supplies any wont of mid-palate volume that the vintage might exhibit.”  William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 92-94 Points JM 92-94

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Les Fairendes reflects its origins, for it is one of the more generous, open-knit wines in the range, even in this cooler vintage. Bursting with scents of honeyed orchard fruit, freshly baked bread and beeswax, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a generous core of fruit and an expansive finish. If anyone wants to open a 2021 Germain young, pick this cuvée. William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 90-92 Points JM 92-94

Domaine Henri Germain Meursault ‘Limozin’ 2021

Chardonnay | Meursault, Burgundy

Exhibiting more texture and flesh than the incisive Chevalières, the 2021 Meursault Le Limozin offers up aromas of sweet orchard fruit, freshly baked bread, white flowers and hazelnuts, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny palate built around a bright spine of acidity. This, too, is a classic in a throwback style. William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 90-93 Points JM 89-92

The 2021 Meursault Les Chevalières is terrific, with all the cut and tension of a wine from two decades ago. Mingling notes of crisp pear and green apple with notions of orange oil, freshly baked bread and white flowers, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with racy acids, chalky extract and a long, penetrating finish. Chardonnay | Meursault, Burgundy

Offering up aromas of pear, lime blossom and freshly baked bread, Germain's 2021 Bourgogne Côte d'Or is medium-bodied, with a racy spine of acidity and a saline finish. It's a lean, somewhat old-fashioned white that will likely pick up a bit more texture in bottle. William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 87-89 Points JM 87-89

A Vino de Pasto from the laminated Albarizas Barajuelas of Pago Macharnudo. The 2022 La Escribano Vino di Pasto 1 year in old fino casks, a tiny bit of ullage and a thin layer of flor. It's exhilarating, energetic drinking ~ lightning! Fascinating to see the balance of flavours showing a little more citrus fruit popping through, still with the usual savoury cereal characters. Saline with textural pleasure a plenty. Green leafy herb at the edge. A playful divine wine.  🔥Hot Tip: Drink

For all the many great things that can be told about Giacosa’s red wines, it is the Arneis that maybe typifies the great qualities of Bruno Giacosa the man. In the early 1970’s, this was an indigenous variety almost entirely lost to the region’s obsession with red wines (at the time mainly Dolcetto) that was ‘rediscovered’ by Alfredo Currado of Vietti and Giacosa very shortly after. The two are almost solely responsible for Arneis’ current importance in the region, especially in Roer

Always a favourite! In England they offer tea in the afternoon in the Mosel they offer Kabinett! Lythe, delicate and transparent. Fine acid with a little savoury reduction. A unique Soave, this wine along with Il Corincino's Verdicchio 'Gaiospino' was one of the first two wines that sparked my interest in Italian wine. It's a rich, textural interpretation of Soave, with great harmony, hints of spice, lovely phenolics (giving texture) and length. The age of the vineyards is reflected in the depth of fruit. FYI - Vecchie Vigne means 'Old Vines' and these are pre-phylloxera from a sandy sub-plot of the La Foscà vineyard. "The 2016 Soave Classico Contrada Salv

This was one of the first Italian white wines to grab my attention & was for a long time a house staple. Now it's back! Well this had me thinking of the Nikolaihof’s 2013 Baumepresse Grüner. The refinement, development with freshness, harmony with subtlety and sense of togetherness from a clever élévage. Clos de l’Écotard Saumur Blanc 2019

Chenin Blanc | Saumur, France

The estate's signature wine, the Clos de Ecotard, offers a refined and harmonoious expression of Chenin Blanc. With white flowers and delicate perfume, flavours of ripe pear, maple spice and a mineral undercurrent are balanced by a taut line of invigorating acidity. The texture gradually builds on the palate and takes shape beautifully in the mouth, with wonderful depth and length and a gentle sweep of phenolics characterise by a fine silvery bitterness on the finish.

Etna Whites are a Thing of Beauty! The tiny white plantings for ‘Il Bianco’ 2020 are similarly a ‘field blend’ of carricante with greganico dorato, which ampelographers have determined is one and the same as garganega (the principal variety for Soave in the Veneto, also grown on basaltic lava). 2020 was a pretty straightforward season with beautifully stable weather in October – the whites have great texture, drinkability and exotic fruit character.
