This was one of the first Italian white wines to grab my attention & was for a long time a house staple. Now it's back!

Description

Pretty much take everything that’s good about the entry-level ‘Il Baco’ and multiply it by 5, then add a few extra bits, and you have ‘Gaiospino’

Verdicchio is a superb variety of real character. Il Coroncino is one of the great producers! In the search for Italian whites of real personality, it made it back on my radar. It’s everything I remembered. Inviting aromas, spice and perfume, that perfect balance between sweet fruit and earthy, savoury goodness. Perhaps the element that makes this wine for me is the texture, silky, supple, just the right amount of extraction from the skins to give it superb mouthfeel and a silvery line of bitterness that works so well in good Italian whites to help give their wines a clean finish and make them such a great accompaniment to food.

Make sure you give it heaps of air to bring out it’s best prior to drinking. I generally chuck it in a decanter and drink it out of a Burgundy glass.

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

It’s had the perfect interplay with oxygen during maturation, giving it wonderful secondary development, whilst maintaining freshness, without oxidation.

From a winemaking perspective, this can only be achieved with quality fruit, anything less would see the wine fall about. It also means the wine is more stable wine exposed to air and will last longer once the bottle has been opened. Never makes it more than a night at Wine Decoded HQ!

Granted DOCG in 2009.

The ‘Gaiospino’ is sourced from the Spescia vineyard with south-west facing terraced vineyards looking toward Cupramontana at 250-400m above sea level.

100% Verdicchio the steep vineyards on a Calcareous Marl are cane pruned, video shows balanced vines, small bunches.

Not fertilized for 20 years. No machines on the vineyard. The fruit is hand-picked. Crushed with stalks into modern airbag press.

Although an organic producer, he sees no need to promote the fact. The wine is wild fermented, 20-30% in puncheons on lees for 16-18 months pre-bottling. The wine goes through 100% Malo with a little Sulphur added at bottling.
