From racy, crisp, Riesling, to rich full-bodied Chardonnay the white wine world has an incredible array of wine styles on offer.

Head to the Rhône Valley, where you’ll, Viognier, Roussane and Marsanne with their amazing textures and spice. Cross the border to Italy and it’s Arneis, Verdicchio, Greco, Carricante, and, Garganega offering up often flavours very different to those of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Revel in the diversity of white wine styles created, as winemakers seek to balance sugar, acid, alcohol, phenolics, the use of oak, lees, and, skin contact to create wines of harmony and personality.

Perhaps in Riesling more than any other white wine will you find nearly every style imaginable.

The wine world is producing better wines than ever before. In regions where laws permit broad experimentation with growing and making white wines is resulting in rapid evolution and refinement of styles.

Ansitz Waldgries Südtiroler Weissburgunder Riserva ‘ITOS’ 2020

Weissburgunder | Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

What he achieves by a combo of half vinified in stainless steel and half the ferments in barrel, is the ideal melding of the racy with the complex and textured.A pretty flash Weissburgunder AKA Pinot Bianco! Excellent drinking. A layer of that shroomy, wet wool earthy funk I often see, and enjoy in high acid whites. White flowers perfume. Ripe white grapefruit. Counterpointed with a little stonefruit, fresh and zippy. Chalky acid with a dusting of phenolics adds cleansing grip. Superb long

As mentioned in the note for the red, the Clos Saint-Jean vineyard lies right next door to the cellars, and the Estate’s parcel sits in the heart of the original clos (i.e. the vines are surrounded by stone walls). The white wines here deliver plenty of texture and depth, courtesy of the clay-rich soils and mature vines. The oldest of these vines are now 80-plus years old. A super release of this wine. It offers great finesse for the vintage, yet remains deep and powerful, with a long, sappy c

The five-hectare vineyard of Les Mazures is one of Chassagne's finest village parcels, producing classy, textural Burgundies. With rocky, limestone-rich soils and a southeast aspect, the location is just under the Premier Cru Les Champs-Gains, which explains the quality and breed on offer! The Pillot family owns 0.63 ha of mature vines, and the wine they produce is a superb, textural and rocky white burgundy, year in, year out.“The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Mazures has a refined

As noted above, Pitangerets has slightly poorer and stonier soils than Charmois and produces firmer, more savoury wines (although in 2022, this difference is less pronounced). Pillot farms half a hectare of vines that are approaching their 60th harvest. Some growers prefer to label this wine under the easier-to-pronounce climat name of Les Combes. Again, this is a powerful, dense, layered wine that starts rich but tightens up as it travels across the palate, with lovely, sappy freshness and dr

Both of Pillot’s Saint-Aubin vineyards lie on the east-facing hillside bordering Chassagne Premier Cru Chaumées. This is the end of the Chassagne hillside. The sites are separated from the rest of Saint Aubin by a small valley—the Premier Cru of En Remilly sits on the other side of this valley. It’s a very interesting part of Saint-Aubin, distinct from the terroirs of Domaine Hubert Lamy, for example. Les Charmois sits higher than Les Pitangerets, and although there is plenty of limesto

Tiberio Pecroino IGP ‘Quarmari’ 2023

Pecorino | Italy, Abruzzo

The 2023 Pecorino Quarmari sneaks up on you with a bouquet that starts quite understated and coy but becomes explosive with time. A burst of crushed rocks and sage gives way to nuances of green apple and sweet spice. It possesses a deep, glycerol-like texture, nearly oily in feel, with tart orchard fruits and masses of stimulating citrus further enhanced by a core of brisk acidity. The 2023 finishes with a gentle tannic heft, leaving Facetime alted lime to linger. The Quarmari takes Pecorino t

Domaine Didier Dagueneau Sancerre ‘Le Mont Damné’ MAGNUM 2022

Sauvignon Blanc | Pouilly-Fumé, Centre Loire

“When you taste at Dagueneau, Le Mont Damné comes along at the end of a line-up of Pouilly Fumés and seems to be oh-so-tender, caressing the palate with its gentle, fine, chalky texture. A sophisticated yet quiet style, this 0.6ha parcel on the mid-slope of this famous Sancerre vineyard was planted back in 2002. While a little closed at this stage, pretty aromas are just itching to blossom, and they are reminiscent of elderflower, ripe apple, honeysuckle and an almost exotic note. There's al

Domaine Didier Dagueneau Silex VDF MAGNUM 2022

Sauvignon Blanc | Pouilly-Fumé, Centre Loire

“The 2022 Silex is not a lot of fun upon release; dry and tense, it really needs time to mellow. There's flesh from the clay element of its clay-flint soils, which is felt on entry but tightens up as it moves through the mouth. This remains a wine of drive, firmness and upright structure; it speaks of the place it comes from rather than its variety. Aromatics are almost a forgotten element; this is a wine about structure and texture. There is a lemony, wild goat cheese-like note and a distinct

Max Ferdinand Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Trockenbeerenauslese HALF 2019
Sweet
"Based on single berries affected by an early botrytis, the raisin selection of the three-starred Auslese is the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese. Intense, very precise and spicy on the nose, the 2019 displays concentrated peach, almond and biscuit as well as lemon chutney, tea and ginger aromas. Silky, refined and highly delicate on the palate, this is a super precise and elegant TBA with great precision, finesse and salinity. The sweetness is certainly palatable but balanc

"Here the brooding and very restrained nose is certainly ripe yet it's still almost classic with its aromas of mineral reduction, citrus peel, sea breeze, oyster shell and apple. Once again, the mouthfeel of the larger-scaled flavors is quite sleek with outstanding intensity along with abundant minerality while exhibiting excellent power on the dense and serious and bone-dry finish that also displays huge length. I did note just enough backend warmth to mention though otherwise this is superb. D
I generally have a slight preference for Dauvissat's Les Preuses, a preference I suspect Vincent Dauvissat shares, but the 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos, at least at this early stage, gets my nod as the king of the cellar—and the wine of the vintage. Wafting from the glass with aromas of citrus oil, fresh bread, oyster shell, white flowers and wet stones, it's full-bodied, layered and textural, with huge concentration, racy acids and a long, resonant finish.William Kelley, The Wine Advoc

Domaine de la Vougeraie Grand Cru ‘Bâtard-Montrachet’ 2022

Chardonnay | Puligny-Montrachet, Burgundy

Generous but not dominant wood sets off intensely floral-suffused aromas of white peach, spice, acacia and citrus confit. The palate impression of the medium-bodied flavors is not as dense, mineral-driven or powerful but they are still impressive, especially in the context of having even better depth and persistence. This is a stylish and ageworthy Bâtard. (from a .38 ha holding divided into 3 parcels, two of which are on the Chassagne side and the remainder on the Puligny side of the divide) 2

Here the elegant nose is cooler and more restrained with a much more discreet application of wood framing the layered spicy aromas of honeysuckle, white peach and a variety of floral nuances. The notably more refined and beautifully textured flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration before terminating in a persistent, balanced and markedly dry finale that is unusually powerful. This BBM is terrific and classy, indeed it’s impressively poised for such a young wine. (from a .46 ha holdi

Maison Ponsot Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne 2020

Chardonnay | Côte du Beaune, Aloxe-Corton

First produced in 2009, Ponsot’s Corton-Charlemagne is drawn from two parcels, both in Aloxe: one on the Pernand border in Le Charlemagne and the second in Les Languettes. As you can see from the notes below, this is a deep, fleshy yet energetic and vibrant Charlemagne. A great success!“Split equally between fruit from Les Languettes and Le Charlemagne on the Aloxe side, this was a slow fermenter. It didn't finish its alcoholic fermentation until July 2021! The barest hint of exotic fruit floats in the background of the elegant, pure and layered aromas of orange peel, passion fruit, white peach, acacia blossom and a whiff of jasmine tea. There is outstanding volume and power for such young vines to the medium weight plus flavors that deliver impressive persistence on the agreeably dry and beautifully well-balanced finale. This also needs better depth though again, that should simply be a question of allowing sufficient time. This too is excellent
