White Wine

Chenin Blanc

Just like Riesling, Chenin Blanc, often abbreviated to just Chenin, is capable of producing an incredibly diverse range of wines from fresh dry (sec), to botrytised sweet wines of insane complexity.

Similar to German Riesling’s Trocken, Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese et al., Chenin from the Loire has a classification system related to sugar levels.

Sec (dry)

Demi-Sec (off dry) typically 15-25 g/lt residual

Moelleux (slightly sweeter) at approximately 40-50 g/l.

Moelleux 1er Trie (the first picking of botrytised berries) that produces a wine with residual sugar of about 60-100 g/lt and yet also with very high acidity.

The dry wines tend to be mid-weight building a lovely level of opulence as they ages.

What does Chenin Blanc Taste Like?

Flavours: Watch for the perfume, pear, citus spice, hints of apricot & jasmine in the sec, these wines build complexity as they age. The sweet wines add an array of aromas and flavours not dissimilar to the great Sauternes, ginger, honey, marmalade, patisserie notes, grilled nuts marzipan and beyond. Again as they age complexity builds.

Balance: Like any great wine, Chennin Blanc will have impeccable balance across each of the styles, marrying natural acid and delicious flavours.

Mouthfeel & Texture: When very young they have a lovely texture which becomes luscious and simply put caresses your tongue as they age. As residual sugar increases the mouthfeel builds, yet, across the styles remains light and clean.

It’s just so easy to hoover!

Where is Chenin Blanc grown?

The Loire Valley and large swathes of South Africa dominate the plantings of Chenin Blanc in the world. Recently we’ve seen a little revival in Australia too.

The Elixirs of Domaine du Closel!

A delicious Jalouise. Quince and Fejoa with a little baking spice. Building in depth with decent length in the glass. Textural phenolics play nicely with chalky acid complexed by hazelnut and crème pat from lees. Vivacious and refreshing. It’ll be lovely to see this fill out with a little more bottle age. Lemon oil and zest at play. Let it warm a little. The perfect intro to the fresher styles of Savennières. It will offer load more with time in bottle!

Thibaud Boudignon Anjou Blanc à Francois(e) 2022

Chenin Blanc | Loire Valley, Anjou

Made from a small parcel in the village of Saint-Lambert, the 2022 Anjou Blanc à Francois(e) is a mouth-filling style without any heaviness. The generosity of the 2022 season has been curbed, and there's a nervousness and slightly reductive nature that keeps it tight. Expect an attractive sourness from the acidity and salinity. The finish has a nice twist of savory character with 20% new oak (500-liter and cigar format). Time is needed here to ameliorate.Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous 93 Points

77 g/L. This sports a flamboyant edge, with apple crumble, ginger cream, quince paste, green tea and honeysuckle notes forming a wide panoply of aromas and flavors, while sweet and racy accents contrast, creating a lengthy finish where everything hangs in harmony. Huet Vouvray Moelleux Première Trie ‘Le Mont’ 2020

Chenin Blanc | Vouvray, D'Anjou-Saumur

The intensely yellow colored 2020 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux Première Trie is highly concentrated and complex on the nose that exhibits candied lemon zest and chutney aromas along with calcareous and walnut notes. Sweet (really sweet!) yet refined and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and generous yet piquant and firmly structured, greatly tensioned and salty 1ère Trie with pineapple flavors on the finely tannic and energetic, very sustainable finish. Chenin. Take the syrup from poached quince and mix it with Créme pâtissière. Entrancing. Lovely, feel like I’m cooking quince. Long fine, excellent acid, draws you in, alive with personality. Bone dry! Phenolics here are interesting, dusty rather than oily. They have a wonderful cleansing feel. Savory with a little oxidative character just enough to add intrigue. Fun. Very good.

Sadie Family Swartland Rotsbank 2024

Chenin Blanc | Swartland, South Africa

The 2024 Rotsbank comes from Chenin planted at the back of the property, according to Sadie, the only one of 12 vineyards he works with that obtains a flintiness. This has fine lift on the nose with light petrolly, almost Riesling-like scents that evolve into more wet wool/lanolin scents with aeration. Fine delineation. The palate is very well balanced with a keen thread of acidity. Bright and sapid in the mouth, it gains weight and a little texture towards the extended finish. Excellent. Neal

Thibaud Boudignon Savennières ‘Clos de La Hutte’ 2021

Stunning wine. Epically good, long and fine. Harmony, seamless, delicacy with mid-palate presence and length. Nuanced, refined texture lined by superb phenolics. White flowers, super fresh white stone fruit, quince, hints of lemon oil & bees wax.  A little crème patissiere & baking spice. Intoxicating. Massive competitor with 1er Chassage, Puligny, Meursault. Sadie Family Swartland Palladius 2022

White Blend | Swartland, South Africa

“The 2022 starts by almost playing hide-and-seek; the wine is more reserved and holding back. And only after warming up and a couple of minutes in the glass does the conversation start. The aromas are that of green apple and citrus flint, and then some of the stone fruit aromas begin to shine through. The wine needs time. The palate is already balanced, and the acidity is met by very firm tannins. The aftertaste is lingering. This bottling is a great vintage to follow the 2021. It is a strong

“Palladius now includes 14 different varieties, with the addition of 6% Assyrtiko to the blend in 2023. Fresher and more focused than it used to be, with less stone fruit sweetness, this is one of the best young releases I've tasted, but will age very well too. Pear, citrus and apricot flavours are underpinned by pithy acidity, with a salty undertone, subtle wood and a tapering finish. 2027-35.”  Tim Atkin MW, 98 Points“The 2023 offers pressed yellow flowers and light walnut and
