Ansitz Waldgries Südtiroler Weissburgunder Riserva ‘ITOS’ 2020

Weissburgunder | Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

What he achieves by a combo of half vinified in stainless steel and half the ferments in barrel, is the ideal melding of the racy with the complex and textured. A pretty flash Weissburgunder AKA Pinot Bianco! Excellent drinking. A layer of that shroomy, wet wool earthy funk I often see, and enjoy in high acid whites. White flowers perfume. Ripe white grapefruit. Counterpointed with a little stonefruit, fresh and zippy. Chalky acid with a dusting of phenolics adds cleansing grip. Superb long

Delicious spiced, pear, perfumed with flowers, almost flinty, lovely phenolics, textural and fine, long and even, gentle, flowing, resolved. Savoury. Subtle layered intrigue. Fine acid profile. Bloody fun wine. The last time I had a Chasselas it was from an old planting in Victoria the origin of which I can’t remember. I ended up buying cases of it as a cleanskin for personal consumption. Its memory prompted me to try this wine from the “vineyard in the sky”. From the incredibl

Domaine de Beudon Petite Arvine AOC Valais 2020

White Blend | Valais, Switzeland

Lovely perfume and lift, textural almost Viognier & Traminer-seque. Big slippery oily phenolic texture. Exceptional perfume spice, marzipan, quince and fejoa, jasmine white flowers, great intensity. Very good. Delicacy with intensity and intrigue! A variety rarely seen outside Valais, Switzerland. Its standing demonstrated by attempts from Angelo Gaja and Michel Chapoutier to work with this somewhat belligerent grape to grow. From Valais in Switzerland and one of the world’s

“The 2021 Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes is lovely, unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, green apple, freshly baked bread and subtle hints of nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, ample and racy, its textural attack segues into a layered, concentrated mid-palate, concluding with a saline finish. The inherent plenitude of the site supplies any wont of mid-palate volume that the vintage might exhibit.”  William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 92-94 Points JM 92-94

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Les Fairendes reflects its origins, for it is one of the more generous, open-knit wines in the range, even in this cooler vintage. Bursting with scents of honeyed orchard fruit, freshly baked bread and beeswax, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a generous core of fruit and an expansive finish. Domaine Henri Germain Meursault ‘Limozin’ 2021

Chardonnay | Meursault, Burgundy

Exhibiting more texture and flesh than the incisive Chevalières, the 2021 Meursault Le Limozin offers up aromas of sweet orchard fruit, freshly baked bread, white flowers and hazelnuts, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny palate built around a bright spine of acidity. This, too, is a classic in a throwback style. William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 90-93 Points JM 89-92

The 2021 Meursault Les Chevalières is terrific, with all the cut and tension of a wine from two decades ago. A Vino de Pasto from the laminated Albarizas Barajuelas of Pago Macharnudo. The 2022 La Escribano Vino di Pasto 1 year in old fino casks, a tiny bit of ullage and a thin layer of flor. It is widely accepted that the Clos des Goisses is one of the finest wines in Champagne for aging and needs at least 10-15 years to unveil its true majesty. “Gorgeous nutty nose, dark golden in colour but completely belying the freshness and racy energy within the glass. Chardonnay | Yarra Valley, Australia

Perfect intro to Hoddle's Creek Chardonnay! Cool Upper Yarra Valley Fruit = Wine of Poise & Great Intensity! Cool(ish) year, small yields. This is the best HCE Chardonnay I can recall tasting. Rieslingfreak No.3 Clare Valley 2021

Riesling | Eden Valley, Australia

Made from the family vineyard, White Hutt, Clare Valley. The heavy red clay soils contribute to the fruit intensity of this wine. According to winemakers John and Belinda Hughes, No.3 is a fruit driven style of Riesling. Classic flavours of this vineyard include ripe lemon and limes and some melon and tropical fruit notes.  The Riesling drinks well young, but will also reward with cellaring. Complete the set. We also have Rieslingfreaks No.2 and No.4 from 2021.

Bondar Fiano 2020

Fiano | South Australia, Australia

Fiano - A little bit of Italy that has made it's way to Australia! Fiano one of those Italian varieties that just seems to work in the warmer regions of Australia. It holds it's acid, giving the wines great texture and balance, the flavours from the skins are superb, spice and all things nice. It has just a slight silvery line of bitterness to finish, common to so many good Italian whites, which perfectly cleans the finish and marries it to food beautifully.

Swinney Riesling 2022

Riesling | West Australia, Australia

Riesling and the Great Southern region of WA are a great match. Swinney's covers all of the gaps I find in so many Australian Rieslings. The two big ones: development and vinosity, and texture. Precise with an exceptional line of acid giving it the tension to hold exceptional fruit. A twist of phenolics adding interest and a cleansing finsh. Great gear! The 2022 Riesling was bottled June 2022, and at the time of tasting (August 2022), it had spent only two months in glass. It is piercing

Gunderloch Jean Baptiste Riesling Kabinett 2019

Riesling | Rheinhessen, Germany

I love seeing Kabinett styles from the different regions of Germany. Gunderloch's from the Rheinhessen is an absolute cracker! So playful. This is an excellent wine. Complex with beautiful acid, a divine texture. Delicious. A beautiful expression. Compared to the Kabinett of Loosen in the Mosel you see and extra 2.5% alcohol, half the residual sugar and 1.5g/L less acid yet both are balanced. The extra fermentation raising the alcohol adds vinosity and more immediate approachability to the wine.

Riesling | Victoria, Australia

This new project from the granite soils in the northern end of the Macedon Ranges at 460m above sea level is an exciting addition to our activities. The vineyard was established in 1995 and the fruit has ostensibly been “lost” interstate until new Victorian owners took over in spring 2021. The new regime has quickly invested in the infrastructure and fine-tuned activities and several top producers are sourcing fruit from this excellent site. The Riesling was harvested in mid April and wild y

Riesling | Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany

Seriously! How often to Graacher and Wehlener just come up with the goods. This is a superb Kabinett.  It has that slide flinty, reductive edge, less so than Prüm's Graacher. Huge energy here with a sense of translucence somehow coming through over the divine fruits. Reminds me of Clemens Busch. It has incredible length, with a pinch of salt to finish. A lovely build to a just off dry rizza. Here there is a little more generosity supported by excellent acid. Again the shape, mouthfeel and flow is excellent. The extension in depth and length here is impressive for just a few more coins. There’s Sauvignon and then there is Sauvignon from Sancerre. There’s Sancerre and then there is Dagenau. Then a pack chasing him. Mellot right at the front of that pack.
