Gavi, like Soave, is a wine that takes its name from the region’s main village. The village, Gavi, is in southern Piedmont, bordering Liguria.

Gavi di Tassarolo Fornaci is a single vineyard wine named after a brick kiln – fornace in Italian – that used to stand in place of the vineyards, within the township of Tassarolo. Cortese grapes are soft pressed and fermented at a low temperature so as to maintain the classic, delicate floral and fruity bouquet of citrus, peach and green apple. The palate is dry and refreshing with a hint of bitter almond and can cellar well, developing toasty honeyed notes.

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

The wine is made from the Cortese grape. Although Cortese is grown all over the northwest, it was first recorded as a Piedmontese variety in 1659 and has long been favoured by the neighbouring port of Genoa to accompany the region’s locally caught seafood.

Founded in 1890, Castellari Bergaglio is a family-run winery that Gambero Rosso hails as “one of the appellation’s principal reference points”. Fourth generation Marco Castellari Bergaglio best describes the family philosophy: “we have always been firm supporters of an uncompromising native identity rather than easier solutions – like blurring this identity with so-called ‘international’ blends.

We wish to craft wines that reflect terroir, not stereotype. Historically and contrary to most of the Piedmont, ours is an area for white wines. Our aim is to see the Gavi appellation grow in quality and recognition and we have deliberately chosen not to spread out the range into reds, so as to maintain loyalty to territorial identity.” Now that is an approach we love!

The 2018 Vintage at Castellari Bergaglio

Without doubt 2018 was one of the most challenging vintage of the last decades, characterized by a climatic trend that required a considerable work in vineyards, especially for those of us who work in organic management.

After some years of early harvesting, we are returned to traditional period, starting to bring to the cellar the first grapes on September 17.

Even if we have to wait as always the confirmation in the glass, the perfect healthy and high quality grapes, together with the quantities that are back to normal, make us think of a vintage that has been demanding but very satisfying.

Yes! Stunning gear. I think the guys from Mosel Fine Wines calling it and Auslese Lange GK style is bang on. Lange GK = Long Gold Capsule and reference to the Reserve of the Reserve wines in Aussie vernacular. Give this 10-20 years and you'll be climbing a stairway to heaven! The 2017er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Auslese was harvested at well over 110° Oechsle. It offers a very classy and elegant nose of apricot blossom, whipped cream, almond, smoke and fine herbs. Max Ferdinand Richter Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett 2017

Seriously! How often to Graacher and Wehlener just come up with the goods. This is a superb Kabinett.  It has that slide flinty, reductive edge, less so than Prüm's Graacher. Huge energy here with a sense of translucence somehow coming through over the divine fruits. Reminds me of Clemens Busch. It has incredible length, with a pinch of salt to finish.
