Ansitz Waldgries Südtiroler Weissburgunder Riserva ‘ITOS’ 2020

Weissburgunder | Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

What he achieves by a combo of half vinified in stainless steel and half the ferments in barrel, is the ideal melding of the racy with the complex and textured.A pretty flash Weissburgunder AKA Pinot Bianco! Excellent drinking. A layer of that shroomy, wet wool earthy funk I often see, and enjoy in high acid whites. White flowers perfume. Ripe white grapefruit. Counterpointed with a little stonefruit, fresh and zippy. Chalky acid with a dusting of phenolics adds cleansing grip. Superb long

Fascinating Pecorini. A little skin contact yields a lick of burnt match that sits nicely as a complexing line over complex fruits with citrus oils. Nicely developed its an example of a textural Pecorino. That will please those after a less funky pecorino than Pepe’s and a much more textural complete it cuts a fine balance between the full blown styles and the fresh precise ones. A lot to love here. Domaine Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin La Princée 2023

Chardonnay | Saint-Aubin, Burgundy

La Princée is a blend of 10 small village parcels from across just under three hectares. One-third of these vines are now over 60 years old, and the remainder were planted in 1985 and 2000. All the parcels are in the cooler, east-facing Saint-Aubin combe (valley), on chalky/mineral soils. It is therefore no surprise that this is a racy white Burgundy with great energy and a limestone-rich personality. The 2023 Saint-Aubin La Princée comes from a vineyard suffering degeneration of vines,

Lamy already makes a terrific, old-vine cuvée from just under a hectare in Les Tremblots, planted between 1946 and 1970. The HD portion of the parcel has massale selection vines interplanted between a few of these rows, bringing the density up to 22,000 vines per hectare. Although Lamy admits he has created a rod for his own back—his high-density parcels require more than twice the work of his regular parcels—he is obviously thrilled by the class of wine he is achieving. The ripeness, ac
The Lamy family have farmed the vines here for three generations, and the parcel borders the southeast corner of Bâtard right next to Madame Bize-Leroy’s Domaine d’Auvenay plot. Is it worth mentioning that d’Auvenay’s Criots is far more expensive? Olivier Lamy has taken the density here up to 24,000 vines per hectare, and unlike d’Auvenay (and most of its Grand Cru contemporaries), this wine is entirely unfettered by new oak (instead, it is raised in a single 250-litre, six-year-o
This singular wine comes from 0.7 hectares in Derrière chez Edouard, planted 20 years ago at a density of roughly 30,000 vines to the hectare (the vines are spaced around 30cm apart in 1m rows). At such a density, Lamy typically gets a maximum of three tiny clusters per vine (sometimes one and sometimes none!) and the entire plot only yields enough juice to fill the contents of a single barrel. Lamy’s trials with higher density have produced completely different wines and he has subsequently
A murger is a pile of stones or a wall made from rocks extracted from a vineyard’s soil. The vineyard name (roughly translating to “the wall of dog’s teeth”) evokes the fragmented, jagged stones that abound on the soil. It’s a rocky hillside vineyard that borders the 1er Cru Puligny vines of Champ Gain (not Folatières as suggested in Neal Martin’s note below) and sits above Montrachet, literally on the “Mont-Rachet”. Then again, such mapping can be deceptive; when you sta

En Remilly is one of Lamy’s prestige terroirs, sitting above the Côte de Beaune’s Grand Cru vineyards and producing one of his finest and most sought-after wines. Lamy has two hectares in this vineyard (planted in 1989) across two distinct parcels that sit just above the Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru. One of these parcels is quite near to his Clos de la Chatenière vineyard and is a warmer terroir on a loosely knit mix of clay and limestone. The second is a far rockier site on almost pure

A discreet application of wood suffuses the restrained and beautifully layered nose of mineral reduction, iodine, tidal pool, white orchard fruit and a vague hint of phenolic character. The super-sleek, dense and intense broad-shouldered flavors possess a palate etching mouthfeel while delivering simply remarkable length on the stony, austere and very dry finale that is akin to rolling small rocks around the mouth. The intensity really builds as it sits on the palate and overall, this beauty is
An airier and mildly cooler nose reflects notes of mineral reduction, white flowers and the hallmark citrus influences. The sleeker though not denser middleweight flavors possess a more refined mouthfeel as well as more evident minerality that seems to build on the bitter lemon-tinged, dry and sneaky long finale. Lovely stuff and this generously proportioned effort should also reward up to a decade of keeping. Drink 2030+ ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound 91 Points WK 92-94
“The 2022 Meursault Clos du Cromin may lack a bit of bandwidth on the nose: quite strict citric fruit, a touch of grass clippings, and a bit closed on the day. Bondar Fiano 2020
Meet the future of McLaren Vale

Bondar Fiano 2020

Fiano | South Australia, Australia

Fiano - A little bit of Italy that has made it's way to Australia! Fiano one of those Italian varieties that just seems to work in the warmer regions of Australia. It holds it's acid, giving the wines great texture and balance, the flavours from the skins are superb, spice and all things nice. It has just a slight silvery line of bitterness to finish, common to so many good Italian whites, which perfectly cleans the finish and marries it to food beautifully.

Swinney Riesling 2022

Riesling | West Australia, Australia

Riesling and the Great Southern region of WA are a great match. Swinney's covers all of the gaps I find in so many Australian Rieslings. The two big ones: development and vinosity, and texture. Precise with an exceptional line of acid giving it the tension to hold exceptional fruit. A twist of phenolics adding interest and a cleansing finsh. Great gear! The 2022 Riesling was bottled June 2022, and at the time of tasting (August 2022), it had spent only two months in glass. It is piercing

Dhillon by Bindi Glenhope Riesling 2023

Riesling | Victoria, Australia

This new project from the granite soils in the northern end of the Macedon Ranges at 460m above sea level is an exciting addition to our activities. The vineyard was established in 1995 and the fruit has ostensibly been “lost” interstate until new Victorian owners took over in spring 2021. The new regime has quickly invested in the infrastructure and fine-tuned activities and several top producers are sourcing fruit from this excellent site. Pieropan Soave Classico 2024

White Blend | Veneto, Italy

In a screw-cap bottle, the organic Pieropan 2024 Soave Classico is a favorite bottle from Northern Italy for very good reason. This simple expression of Garganega (blended with 15% Trebbiano di Soave for extra richness) offers nice freshness, mineral tones and sweet primary fruit that recalls freshly cut apple and white peach. This was not an easy vintage by any stretch, but this white wine comes out fighting. The Pieropan family does a terrific job with this entry-level release of 560,000 bottl

Chardonnay | Victoria, Australia

This is the second wine we have made from this nearly 30 year old Macedon Ranges vineyard. The Glenhope vineyard is planted at 450m above sea level on the granite soil at the northern end of the region. The wine is made in the same way we make Bindi Chardonnays; destemmed berries go into the press and the juice is taken straight from the tray into the barrels, around 30% of which are new small French oak. Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière HALF 2020

Sauvignon Blanc | Sancerre, France

There’s Sauvignon and then there is Sauvignon from Sancerre. There’s Sancerre and then there is Dagenau. Then a pack chasing him. Mellot right at the front of that pack.
