Sometimes a single bottle just doesn’t befit the occasion!

When you need to celebrate in style a magnum is the minimum.

Wisdom suggests the larger the bottle the slower the wine inside will age.

There’s another interesting factor when it comes to bottle fermented sparkling like Champagne. The fermentation ‘kinetics’ the way the wine ferments in magnum just seems to give the Champagne magnums the edge in quality over single bottles.

Maybe it’s just the party environment!

Here’s a list of different wine bottle sizes.

1.5L Magnum = 2 x 750 ml bottles.

3.0L Double Magnum – Jeroboam = 2 x Magnums or 4 x 750ml bottles.

4.5L Jeroboam (aka Rehoboam) = 6 x 750 ml bottles. (Jeroboam is either 3 or 4.5 L depending on what part of France you’re in)

6.0L Imperial (aka Methuselah) = 8 x 750 ml bottles or 2 x Double Magnums.

9.0L Salmanazar = 12 x 750 ml bottles or a full case of wine!

12.0L Balthazar = 16 x 750 ml bottles or two Imperials.

15.0L Nebuchadnezzar = 20 x 750 ml bottles or the name of the ship in the Matrix.

18.0 L Solomon (aka Melchoir) = 24 x 750 ml bottles.

Lustrous ruby. Concentrated fruit with minerally notes and grows increasingly complex in the glass. Full yet elegant on the palate with finely chiselled tannins. Breathtaking balance. Simply gorgeous, but far from ready. Montalcino nobility.Walter Speller, Jancis Robinson 18+ PointsKO 100 DC 100 EG 96 ML 94

On the left bank of Le Serein and on the middle of the slope, Vaillons is a particularly well-positioned Premier Cru that enjoys an excellent reputation thanks to the work of several key growers. The domaine works with vines planted in 1974 in the lieux-dits of Les Epinottes (a cooler part of the vineyard) and Roncières (which provides more opulence). Then, a parcel of 75-year-old vines in Sécher usually accounts for 30% of the blend and provides intense mineral cut and structure. The wine wa

The most south-westerly of all the Chablis Premiers Crus, Les Beauregards is one of its coolest due to its altitude and location at the end of Chablis’ Left Bank. It’s also one of the steepest (meaning the clay soils are shallow, and the limestone marl is never far from the surface) and one of the highest, rising to 300 metres. While this parcel has been in the family’s hands for decades, it was replanted in 2001 with mass-selection cuttings from Stéphane Moreau’s most treasured vine

R.Pouillon ‘Les Terres Froides’ Premier Cru MAGNUM NV

Chardonnay | Montagne de Reims, Tauxières

Often in the 'Pro' wine circles, you're asked to nail your banner to a mast in a blind tasting. Although a Chardonnay, Fabrice has fooled, without malice, many a Champenois, who has called this wine a Pinot. It's not so much the flavours, but, the body, richness, and, mid-palate power that this wine offers that can confuse. In the end, all of this is irrelevant. What you have in front of you is a wine of purity, line, length, excellent acid, with lovely ripe flavours, a little pith and grapef

R.Pouillon Rosé Brut MAGNUM NV

Pinot Noir | Vallée de la Marne, Champagne

Such a beautiful Rosé. If finding a good wine is hard, finding tasty Rosé Champagne is a true mission. There are so many tricked up hard angular wines. Fabrice has got it all going on here. Rosé made by allowing fruit skin contact rather than dosing a white wine with some Red really does appear to offer a much more refined result. This one has lovely fresh, yet developed, red fruits, a little savoury edge and so much more going on. The halmark Pouillon harmony and energy. Just that very sligh

Thibaud Boudignon Savennières ‘Clos Frémine’ MAGNUM 2022

Chenin Blanc | Savennières, D'Anjou-Saumur

The 2022 Savennières Clos de Fremine has purity and tranquility; it's a cloud of Chenin Blanc blossoming in the mouth. There were a lot of grapes that didn't make the grade in 2022 due to the hot, dry conditions of the season, but the strict sorting implemented by Boudignon and team appears to have done the trick. The wine is gently fresh, but a salty line provides persistence. An appetizing fragrance of chamomile, honey and nectarine lingers long in the mouth.Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous 94 Poi

The 2020 Barolo Bricco delle Viole, Vajra's flagship, is very fine. Dark cherry, kirsch, blood orange, spice and lavender are nicely amplified. The 2020 is gracious and elegant, but its youthful Nebbiolo tannins will require some time to soften. The 2020 is another wine that captures my keen interests with its sublime balance. I would be thrilled to own it.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96 Points ML 95

Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva 'Montestefano' MAGNUM 2019
KO 99 AG 95
The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is perhaps the most complete of the 2019 Riservas at this stage. It offers fine depth, plenty of tannin and nascent emerging inner sweetness to tie it all together. A wine of stature and textural depth, the Montestefano is my early favorite in this lineup.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 95 Points KO 99*NOTE Galloni tasted in Sept 2023 noting his intent to look at the PdB Riservas in 12 months expecting they will resolve and shift up. The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà  is redolent of dark fruit, crushed rocks, graphite, sage, menthol and lavender all race across the palate, supported by bracing, young Rabajà tannins that make themselves felt. KO 96 AG 94
The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is powerful, savory and intensely linear, in classico Ovello style, and yet it appears to have enough fruit behind its imposing tannins to develop well over the coming years. In this tasting, the Ovello feels pretty closed post bottling, but its inherent balance and qualities are there. Clean saline notes extend the finish in promising fashion.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 94 Points KO 96*NOTE Galloni tasted in Sept 2023 noting his intent to look at the P

On the opposite flank of the Valvan valley from Vaillons with a deep soil of bleu d’argile (blue clay) and plenty of limestone rocks, Montmains tends to produce textbook Chablis of minerality and verve. This comes from 0.65 hectares of very old vines (70 years on average) in the lieux-dits of Les Monts Mains, Les Bouts des Butteaux and Vaux Miolot. The latter parcel on deeper, clayey soils is difficult to work but brings additional flesh and texture. This year, it was vinified and ag

Massolino “Parussi” Barolo MAGNUM 2017

Nebbiolo | Castiglione Falletto, Italy

Massolino’s Castiglione Falletto Parussi tannins take longer to resolve than Parafada. Bordering both core soil types. Quite dense and layered. Bright red fruit with darker macerative pops. Fresh acid long. Will resolve beautifully in time.Comes in individual wooden box.
The Wehlener Auslese had everything. The 2022er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese has a beautifully engaging and captivating nose of fresh herbs, white mint, bergamot, yellow flowers, pineapple, candied grapefruit, smoke, and juniper. The wine has great presence and is still on the sweeter side on the palate, where ripe yellow and slightly honeyed fruits with a touch of exotic presence come through. The finish is slightly broader yet captivating and hugely long. The aftertaste shows candied gr
