Red Wine

Tempranillo

Tempranillo a crazy variety, massive leaves, potentially huge bunched, and great natural acidity.

Plantings are increasing in Australia. It’ll be interesting to see the wines it ends up producing. If Corymbia’s Red field blend dominated by Tempranillo is any indication it’ll find a happy home down under!

Where is it grown?

By far the greatest plantings of Tempranillo are in Spain with around 500,000 acres planted. Scattered throughout the country, internationally it’s the wines of Rioja that are synonymous with Tempranillo.

It’s often blended with Garnacha (Grenache), Monastrell (Mataro), and, Bobal.

In Portugal, it’s known as Tinta Roriz with around 40,000 acres. With significant plantings in the Duouro for both Port and table wine production.

There’s a splash in Southern France too.

What does it taste like?

Take away the influence of often heavy-handed oak and oxidation in traditional style Rioja and you have a higher acid variety with a sense of opulence, soft tannins, and, vibrant red fruits.

Add winemaking and blending with other varieties and there’s a broad spectrum of different styles being made.

In Portugal’s Duoro, it offers an acid and juicy fruit component to the varietal mix for Port Production.

Very much how we saw it at Yarra Yering.

The 2021 El Bardallo is produced with the grapes from the same plot as in previous years in the zone of San Vicente that names the wine; they believe this plot produces the wines in their cellar that have more finesse. Like the rest of the reds, it fermented with indigenous yeasts and part whole clusters and matured in 500- and 600-liter barrels in their underground cellar. This is serious and elegant, with ripe berry fruit and spice from the élevage, a full palate with pungent flavors, power a

Thrilled to be able to offer my thoughts on this special wine. Lunch with the full current release set from La Rioja Alta was thrilling. The wines are a demonstration of respect for the past and judicious use of modern technology combined with an approach that offer a style reminiscent of a refreshed classic. No fads here! The Ardanza is a ridiculous value. Coming on 10 years old. This is very good. The harmony and grape first tannin with layering of very subtle oak that wraps rather than in

Artuke ‘La Condenada’ Rioja Tinto 2021

Red Blend | Spain, Alavesa

Trying ‘La Conenada’s’ brother 'El Escolladero'  along with a few other wines from the Artuke range was enough to convince me to grab a couple of boxes.Well it's arrived, and I can see why it is one of the Artuke's two crown jewels! The palate has exceptional shape and flow, yes it is precise! The acid ~ tannin ~ fruit ~ alcohol complex sits in perfect harmony. As with the El Escolladero there is just a little edge of grip to the mouthfeel, again in a cleansing positive way. Opening

Artuke ‘La Condenada’ Rioja Tinto 2022

Red Blend | Spain, Alavesa

Trying 2021 ‘La Conenada’s’ brother 'El Escolladero'  along with a few other wines from the Artuke range was enough to convince me to grab a couple of boxes. I've not looked back. The 2022 'La Condenada is a little more tightly coiled with a chalky acid profile needing time to resolve. Excellent transparency through an elegant fruit profile of fine red fruits with sold depth and length. Opening in the glass beautifully, building mid-palate weight and length with a fantail finish. Tasting this in Apr 2024 it showed sophistication refinement of tannin, stunning flow and harmony. Deeply layered and delicious. A note differing to Guitiérrez' and perhaps a factor of being some 2 years older when tasted. Delicious. The 2018 Roda I is in line with the other 2018s, lower alcohol, grainier tannins and a little more earthy rusticity that to me translates into more character and less polished wines. This was a blend of 92% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano and 2% Garnacha from 30+-y

Dominio de Pingus ‘Flor de Pingus’ 2021

Red Blend | Spain, Castilla y León

The 2021 Flor de Pingus is a village wine from La Horra, made with small vinifications by plot and then a blending exercise, so it’s the wine they feel is most their style. They look for texture, looking for a delicate and elegant wine. The nose is very subtle and harmonious, super clean and with a lot of focus. There are no traces of oak on the nose. The profile of the wine is more in line with 2018 or 2016 than with 2015 or 2019. This has a velvety texture, an elegant mouthfeel and so

The single-vineyard red 2021 Camino de Ribas comes from a plot, La Cóncova, under the Toloño peak close to Rivas de Tereso, a hamlet from San Vicente de la Sonsierra, possibly the coolest zone, with a north-facing exposure, a place with shallow soils with sand, limestone and sandstone and full of aromatic herbs. It's a blend of 50% Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha and the rest Viura, Jaen, Garnacha Blanca, Palomino and other white varieties. It fermented with a long and soft vinification with some wh

If 2008 felt cool and Atlantic, the 2009 Roda I could be described as Mediterranean, from a warm and healthy vintage. Here they aim for black fruit character while the regular Roda should show red fruit. The grapes are sourced from over 30-year-old vines and is mostly Tempranillo with some 5% Graciano. It matured in first and second use French oak barrels for 16 months. It's a warm vintage, without reaching the heights of 2011, but there was some stress in the peak of the summer, which in some w

Tasting the 1994 in May 2023 I was lost in the glass with the delicacy, perfume, vibrant red fruit, perfectly poised acid tannin complex. The sophistication, elegance and intoxicating perfume of the wine, simply astonishing.
