Red Wine

Tempranillo

Tempranillo a crazy variety, massive leaves, potentially huge bunched, and great natural acidity.

Plantings are increasing in Australia. It’ll be interesting to see the wines it ends up producing. If Corymbia’s Red field blend dominated by Tempranillo is any indication it’ll find a happy home down under!

Where is it grown?

By far the greatest plantings of Tempranillo are in Spain with around 500,000 acres planted. Scattered throughout the country, internationally it’s the wines of Rioja that are synonymous with Tempranillo.

It’s often blended with Garnacha (Grenache), Monastrell (Mataro), and, Bobal.

In Portugal, it’s known as Tinta Roriz with around 40,000 acres. With significant plantings in the Duouro for both Port and table wine production.

There’s a splash in Southern France too.

What does it taste like?

Take away the influence of often heavy-handed oak and oxidation in traditional style Rioja and you have a higher acid variety with a sense of opulence, soft tannins, and, vibrant red fruits.

Add winemaking and blending with other varieties and there’s a broad spectrum of different styles being made.

In Portugal’s Duoro, it offers an acid and juicy fruit component to the varietal mix for Port Production.

Very much how we saw it at Yarra Yering.

The 2012 Viña Tondonia Reserva comes from a very dry year, with 25% less rain than the average (at the time), resulting in lower yields of very healthy grapes that delivered wines with nice balance between alcohol and polyphenols, making it very apt for the aging in barrel. It had a slightly longer élevage in barrel, six years. The wine is aromatic with a developed profile, spicy and tertiary (forest floor, a touch of brick dust and iodine), complex and nuanced. The palate is full and round, w

José Gil Vino de Pueblo San Vincente 2021

Red Blend | Spain, La Rioja

A great example of the new Rioja! Grape first focused on exceptional vineyards from a clearly defined village. Much to explore flowers, spice, woody herbs, darkness, earthy and savoury notes with an enticing array of fruits. On release, it needs a good decant and some patience and will be better on the second day as its youthful exuberance resolves. Bodegas y Vinedos Alnardo ‘PSI’ Tinto Fino 2021
