A discreet but not invisible hint of volatile acidity adds lift to the well-layered nose of black cherry, violet, lavender and subtle earth and spice hints. The muscular and energetic broad-shouldered flavors offer excellent punch and depth on the driving and firmly structured finish. Assuming that the VA remains at its current level, it shouldn't be more than a background element.Allen Meadows, Burghound

A cool, pure and relatively high-toned nose combines aromas of essence of red cherry, lilac, violet, lavender and plenty of earth character. There is better concentration to the nicely powerful and muscular flavors that culminate in a robust finale and while the finish still comes across as grippy, the tannins seem riper.Burghound

Nervi-Conterno Gattinara ‘Molsino’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Italy, Alto Piemonte

The 2019 Gattinara Molsino is a dark, brooding wine. Smoke, incense, licorice and leather open in the glass, but only with great reluctance. A wine of tremendous persistence and presence, the Molsino is so impressive in 2019. It is also embryonic and in need of cellaring. The only question is how long. Time in the glass brings out the wine's natural resonance, offering a glimpse of what will come in time. Drink 2029-2049Antonio Galloni, Vinous 97 Points

Nervi-Conterno Gattinara ‘Valferana’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Italy, Alto Piemonte

The 2019 Gattinara Valferrana is a dark, potent wine. It deftly marries fruit intensity with elegance, with deep notes of lavender, spice, menthol and crushed rocks. Time in the glass is works wonders here. If anything, I may have underestimated this last year! Drink 2027-2049Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96+ Points

To taste wine from 140 year old vines that has not been influenced by growing on a rootstock is becoming a rare thing at a global level. Darkly alluring and youthfully backward, the 2022 Etna Rosso Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino Calderara Sottana smolders up with a blend of sweet spices, dusty violets and ash, giving way to dried black cherries, sage and cloves. This is velvety yet finessed, with a polished wave of ripe red and blue fruit that flows across a juicy stream of acidity. Hint

The 2023 Etna Rosso Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino Calderara Sottana opens like a flower shop on the nose, intensely layered with depths of black cherry and spice. This is more lifted and graceful than expected, with a sour citrus tinge, tart wild berry fruits and mineral tones. Edgy tannins pinch at the cheeks as the 2023 resonates with blue and purp

As is the case with the Chênes Carteaux, there is a high-toned note of herbal present on the poached plum and sauvage-suffused aromas. I very much like the texture of the tautly muscular yet relatively fine middleweight flavors that exude a bead of minerality on the balanced, youthfully austere and impressively long finale. This is excellent. (from a 1.08 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age) 2032+ ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound (91-94) Points

This is one of the benchmark traditional Barolo's from a classic years! Every time I’ve tried Cavallotto’s ‘Vigna San Guiseppe’ I’ve gone to a very happed place. The core of fruit in is always insane. Having tasted a dozen of the best Baroli alongside Vigna San Guiseppe over many vintages, it’s clear this is up at the top of the list. Cavallotto’s always beautifully balances power with elegance. The 2013 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is fabulous. The aromatics a

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots wafts from the glass with aromas of plums, cinnamon, peonies, orange rind and raw cocoa. Medium-bodied, fine-boned and lively, it's bright and nicely concentrated, with youthfully chalky tannins and a saline finish. As usual, this is one of the more tightly wound premiers crus in the range, with an elegant, rather ethereal profile, and it will reward bottle age.William Kelley, Parker's Wine Advocate

Nervi-Conterno Gattinara ‘Valferana’ 2020

Nebbiolo | Italy, Alto Piemonte

The 2020 Gattinara Valferana is beautifully lifted and floral. Gorgeous red-toned fruit, white pepper, chalk and orange peel all rush from the glass in this striking, finely-cut Gattinara. Sweet floral notes and a burst of red fruit punctuate the finish. In 2020, the Valferana is all finesse. It should be even more expressive in another few years’ time. Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96 PointsThere are 20 cru vineyards in the Gattinara DOCG appellation, with Valferana, meaning ‘Iron Va
