François Villard Saint-Joseph ‘Mairlant’ 2020

Shiraz/Syrah | Saint-Joseph, France

Love the perfume here very complete long layered fine, dark and red fruit with brooding and stalk. Harmonious with subtle pepper pop. Excellent élévage, fine acid. Build in structure and mid-palate grip, giving energy. Playful fun.Excellent comparision with Hauts Châssis’ Saint-Joseph made with no whole bunches.Saturated violet color. Vibrant, spice-tinged dark berry, cherry, potpourri and licorice aromas are sharpened by a smoky mineral flourish. Fresh blackberry and bitter

Gorelli Rosso di Montalcino 2019

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Italy

Speller is on the money, this is still closed (April 2023). Builds with time in the glass, the fruit leans toward the fine Burgundian style. The tannins are just a little edgy, as with the Brunello, as the new Botti season future vintages should see further refinement to the texture.  This clearly sits in between the Rosso & Brunello level. I like the cranberry descriptor and would add a musk and rose top note. A few years in bottle should see the tannins resolve fully and mid-palate weight

Yeringberg Pinot Noir 2019

Pinot Noir | Yarra Valley, Australia

"The 2019 Pinot Noir combines the kind of ripeness and generosity, delicacy and finesse that characterise great Pinot Noir. Initially reserved, the nose offers notes of sun-kissed strawberry, blood plum and rose petal, together with exotic hints of musk and nutmeg. The palate has a supple richness, with a depth of flavour built on both the character of the vintage and the age of the vines. Juicy strawberry fruit, plum and rhubarb flavours are underpinned by an almost luxuriant structure that’s

Shiraz is the Yarra Valley's best kept secret - make sure to get in on it! "Shiraz 97%, Viognier 3%. The 2019 Shiraz demonstrates again that our part of the Yarra can produce wonderfully spicy, elegant and age-worthy Shiraz. An energetic array of blueberry, white pepper, and bay leaf aromas leap from the glass, followed by Moroccan spice notes, liquorice and dark cherry. The palate has brightness and energy as well as a beguiling subtle, savoury depth. The fruit rides on the back of a powerful y

Auguste Clape “Le Vin des Amis” 2021

Shiraz/Syrah | Rhône Valley, Cornas

Glimmering violet color. Mineral-accented dark berries and licorice on the pungent, incisive nose. Offers gently sweet blackberry, blueberry and bitter cherry flavors that show very good clarity and spicy lift. A floral note appears on the nicely tannic, persistent finish, which features resonating cherry and black pepper notes.Josh Raynolds, Vinous 90-91 PointsThe least expensive, but still ageworthy, wine is the Le Vin des Amis, a blend of young-vine Cornas and Syrah grown just sou

Grumello is to the east of Sondrio on the opposite side to Sassella making for a fascinating comparison in site! This is where the largest strides have been made. Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2020

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

Once again proving PdB's Barbaresco is a great benchmark! The 2020 still so youthful unfurls in the glass with time. Perfumed, flowing into generous yet retrained red fruits. Energy with length and layered tanin. Beautifully weighted through the palate. Slatey, mineral with graphite fine tannins. A little spice and a faint resinous line adding to the intrigue. A complete wine that screams Barbaresco. The 2020 Barbaresco boasts an ample set of aromas with wild cherry, blue flower, sweet

Very good. Savoury, earthy, dark, wonderful textural, refinement, layers of red and black fruits & a little spice. Beautifully made. Musk and woody herb / stalk. An impressive rendition particularly for this coin. Balanced by a lovely line of natural acid  and excellent fine tannins with just the right amount of grip for the fruit weight. There’s a lot of pleasure to be had here and it will definitely offer more over the coming years.Jancis Robinson MW has written that the wines f

Aphelion Rapture Grenache 2021

Grenache | South Australia, Australia

Wow there is some zip. The blend is more than the sum of its parts. The different perfumes: violets and fading flowers, fruits: red, rhubarb, blood orange, a little musk, spice and beyond marry offering a complex profile. The build in tannin across the palate is fine yet not insignificant. There is more immediate harmony and expression than with the single vineyard wines. Darkness with freshness. The refreshing, thirst quenching nature of the wine is once again a demonstration of the shift from

Cascina Roccalini Barbaresco 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

When a young winery pop's up a little leg work is required to suss them out. Obviously, the most important thing is what's in the glass. Let's add the other bits of the equation though. The vineyards are right next to Olek Bondonio's joint, they used to supply their Neb to Dante Scaglione at Bruno Giacosa for ten years, and Dante helped them start their own venture. BOOM!The 2019 Barbaresco is playful expression, strawberries and cream lift from the glass. The label is a visual descriptor of
