The 2020 Cru’s from Pieropan are bang on. Loads of energy & juicy fine acid making for a refreshing beverage. Excellent length and depth. White flowers, pear, spice and a little citrus pith. Excellent shape and weight. A classic from the Pieropan crew!

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

The single vineyard Soave wines, Calvarino and La Rocca, are polar opposites, yet they share a remarkable capacity to age gracefully. Calvarino, with 30% Trebbiano, is oak-free with pure fruit that is tight and minerally. La Rocca, from the vineyard that overlooks the town itself, is late harvested and aged in large cask, displaying ripe tropical fruit with an intense, layered palate that is velvety and persistent.

The Calvarino vineyard is in the heart of the Soave Classico zone and represents the core of the ancient family estate, bought at the beginning of 1900. The soil here dates back to the tertiary era and is rich in clay and tufaceous basalt which give the wine an attractive savoury, mineral quality. The name ‘Calvarino’ derives from ‘Little Calvary’ reflecting how difficult the soil is to work and the tortuous path which winds from top to bottom. The label was first released in 1971 and is symbolic of the most traditional, most characteristic wine from the Soave area.

Grape variety: Garganega: 70% Trebbiano di Soave: 30%

Geographical location: Hillside vineyard in the Soave classico zone.

Vineyard characteristics: Volcanic soils, tufaceous and basalt rich, from the Eocene era.

Altitude: 200-300 m above sea level, facing north-west.

Training: Traditional pergola veronese with 3000 vines per hectare.

Defence method: Holistic, low environmental impact approach to pest control.

Buds per vine: 8 buds per vine.

Average age of vines: 30-60 years old. Yields: 60 hl per hectare (2 kilos per vine)

Harvesting: Hand-picked, often in two harvests to select the ripest grapes. Picking begins in mid-September for Trebbiano di Soave and in October for the Garganega grapes.

Vinification techniques: The grapes are de-stemmed and crushed with the free-run juice fermented separately between 16-18°C in glass-lined cement tanks. Ageing: The wine ages in glass-lined cement tanks for a year. During this period, it remains on the fine lees for increased richness and complexity. After bottling, it ages slowly in the bottle for a few months before release.

Organoleptic properties: pale straw yellow, with greenish reflections when young; golden with ageing; the aroma is fresh, flowery with aromas of elder, lemon and cherry; the palate is dry, well balanced and elegant, with tremendous length and finesse.

Nino recognised the importance of terroir early on, expanding the family’s hillside vineyards and creating his single vineyard wines, Calvarino in 1971 and La Rocca in 1978. Today, sons Andrea (viticulturist) and Dario (winemaker), maintain the family’s profound commitment to the terroir and tradition of Soave and, more recently, Valpolicella. So spicy, yet also rich, the 2020 Soave Classico Calvarino impresses with an alluring mix of ground ginger, lime zest, minty basil and wet stone. It envelopes the palate in silky textures while also bombarding it with salty mineral tones and a sour twang of green apple. While supremely elegant, the 2020 is also full of nervous energy, as it finishes long with tropical floral nuances and a bitter tug of lemon rinds. Readers can certainly enjoy the Calvarino today, yet it needs some time to come fully into focus.
