Côte Chalonnaise

Rully

The AOC, Rully was created in 1939 and makes both Chardonnay (2/3rds) and Pinot Noir  (1/3rd). It has 23 climats classified Premier Cru.

Situated at the end of the Côte de Beaune region, it marks the begining of the Côte Chalonnaise.

Rully is a village with a long history. It boasts a château which has been in the same family for six centuries, a church with an elegant bell-tower, as well as fine houses and parks. The abbey of Saint-Bénigne in Dijon, the powerful Maison de Vergy, and the Dukes of Bourgogne have all played their part in the history of these vineyards in the Côte Chalonnaise. Since the early 19th century it has been, in addition, an important centre for the making of Crémant de Bourgogne.

Domaine de la Folie

A vibrant, energetic core of long even fruit layered and complex, particularly for a wine at this price point. A fine fragrance, and delicate perfume entance. Sophistication tannins and playful cleansing edge and a little spice. It will certainly benefit from a day open or an early decant in its youth. Juicy, thirst-quenching and simply delicious. Plenty more to come from a very, very good wine!Paul Kaan, Wine Decoded Sept 2024The 2022 Rully du Clos de Bellecroix Cuvée Marey comes f

Along with the likes of Dureuil-Janthial and Jaeger-Defaix, Domaine de la Folie is showing just how much potential there is in the Côte Chalonaise. Their top white the 1er Cru 'Clos St Jacques' rests in a state of grace. A line of fine acid balances elegant, transparent fruit of great depth and length. Florals and citrus are weave into an array of complex aromas. Seamless. It's been made by a clever hand!Paul Kaan, Wine Decoded Sept 2024The 2022 Rully Clos St. Jacques 1er Cru comes

The 2023 Rully du Clos de Bellecroix Cuvée Marey, raised in 25% new oak, has more intensity on the nose than the regular cuvée. Blackcurrant and raspberry open, leaning more toward the latter as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, lightly spiced with a dash of black pepper toward the finish. Enjoy this over the next decade. Drink: 2026-2036Neal Martin, Vinous 90 PointsAged in ex-white barrels. Super fun vino, with a lick of spice. Excellent fruit

The 2023 Rully Blanc Clos du Chaigne ler Cru has less wood influence than the previous year due to a different type of charring to the barrels with lower heat. It has a forward and vigorous bouquet with patisserie and light peach skin scents. There is more aromatic presence than the Clos la Folie. Quite spicy and phenolic, the palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity and a persistent finish. This has great potential. Drink: 2025-2035 Neal Martin, Vinous 91 PointsA big step

The 2023 Rully Clos St. Jacques ler Cru comes from a 1.69-hectare monopole and was matured in 20% new oak. It has a very aromatic bouquet with tropical fruit, passion fruit and touches of white peach. There is wonderful definition and vigor here. The palate is well balanced with a silver thread of acidity and notes of lemon thyme and orange pith, very harmonious on the finish. This is an excellent Clos Saint-Jacques (not from Gevrey!). Domaine Jaeger-Defaix

18 months élévage shows in a complete lovely fine expressive, complex Chardonnay. The shift from tasting the Chablis of Bernard Defaix to Côte du Chalonaise wines of Jaeger-Defaix sees an immediate feel of opulence. No bâtonage old oak 100% malo. Again calm and harmonious. Les Cloux remains the tighter and more linear of the Domaine's two Premier Cru whites. Clearly rounder across the palate than the Chablis whilst maintaining clarity and complexity. Here the wood treatment is more su

Rounder, fuller and richer than the Les Cloux a bolder interpretation of Rully. Soft plush and generous, yet still not heavy. A little broader across the back palate though tightening as it finishes. A great set of flavours. A comforting Chardonnay that envelops you. As seems typical of the two Domaines of the family there is a good deal of complexity.A subtle but not imperceptible application of wood sets off the cool and airy blend of white orchard fruit, citrus confit and a hint of cr

Very good. Savoury, earthy, dark, wonderful textural, refinement, layers of red and black fruits & a little spice. Beautifully made. Musk and woody herb / stalk. An impressive rendition particularly for this coin. Balanced by a lovely line of natural acid  and excellent fine tannins with just the right amount of grip for the fruit weight. There’s a lot of pleasure to be had here and it will definitely offer more over the coming years.Jancis Robinson MW has written that the wines f

A discreet if easily perceptible application of wood sets off equally airy and super-fresh aromas of Granny Smith apple, lemon rind and acacia. There is once again more volume as well as better density to the powerful and sappy medium weight flavors that are shaped by bright acidity on the firm and serious but not really austere finale. Worth checking out as this is a quality Rully villages. Drink 2028+Allen Meadows, Burghound 89 Points ♥ OutstandingThe 2022 Rully Maizières comes

Here too there is a whiff of phenolic character suffusing the equally exotic nose where the wood influence is slightly more prominent though still reasonably discreet. On the palate there is outstanding density to the rich, punchy and sappy medium weight and generously proportioned flavors that terminate in a refreshing lemon rind-inflected finish that could also use better depth. We really sense the aromatic freshness of the Chardonnay coming from its acidity and the minerality from its mainly mineral terroir. All nurtured by oak notes mainly from foudres in which this wine was vinified and matured. The Margoté plot is located to the South of the Rully appellation. This area is cold and windy.
