Côte-de-Nuits

Morey-Saint-Denis

Located at the heart of Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis forms a bridge, between the wines of Gevrey-Chambertin to the north and those of Chambolle-Musigny to the south. Most of the appellation’s vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir grapes, producing wines that are typically full-bodied, structured and complex. However, a few parcels are planted with Chardonnay or Pinot Blanc varieties, yielding a rare and interesting white wine, generally quite firm and opulent.

The vineyards of Morey-Saint-Denis transition from the valley flats to 270m in altitude on the slopes. The region also has a diversity of terroirs – from pebbly, limestone rich soils in the north and south to more alluvial, clay soils in the mid-region.

There's a great purity & vibrancy to Magnien's wines. His Faconnières is superb! Once again there is a plethora of floral elements present on the elegant nose of red currant, cherry and pretty spice wisps. The succulent, fleshy and punchy middleweight flavors a really lovely texture that carries over to the youthfully austere and delicately balanced finale. Pinot Noir | Morey-Saint-Denis, Burgundy

There's a great purity & vibrancy to Magnien's wines. His Faconnières is superb! A fresh, bright and airy nose reflects notes of mostly red berries and newly turned earth. The supple, round and agreeably textured flavors are not especially dense but the finish is also inviting despite being dusty and youthfully austere. A few years of patience should be beneficial. Moderate reduction dominates the nose at present. There is both better complexity and mid-palate density to the still supple and delicious medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a more powerful and noticeably more structured finale. This has fine development potential and is a wine that will need at least some patience. Drink: 2030+Allen Meadows, Burghound 89-91 Points

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis ‘Trilogie’ 2020

Pinot Noir | Morey-Saint-Denis, Burgundy

I first tried Hubert Lignier's wines back in the 1990's & have never looked back! Offering up aromas of cassis, red berries, warm spices and loamy soil, the 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Trilogie is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep and youthfully tightly wound core of fruit that's framed by lively acids and powdery tannins. This is likely to emerge as Lignier's finest communal-level bottling this year, but it will also require the most patience.William Kelley, The Wine A

‘A fresh, cool and more elegant array is comprised by notes of both red and dark pinot fruit along with background floral and earth suggestions. The succulent, round and delicious middle weight flavors are finer if less powerful, all wrapped in a lingering finish that progressively tightens up as it sits on the palate to the point that it becomes quite compact. This will definitely need a few years to unwind. Drink 2028+.’ Burghound.com January 2020.

"A more floral suffused nose speaks of spiced aromas of red currant, cherry, violet and lavender. The fleshy, round and nicely refined flavors possess good delineation on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish that offers just a bit more overall depth and persistence. Note that this will need at least a few years of cellaring first."Allen Meadows, Burghound

"A softly perfumed and pretty red berry fruit nose is also trimmed in just enough oak influence to merit pointing out. The round, fleshy and solidly voluminous middle weight flavors possess a refined mid-palate texture that carries over to the youthfully austere and highly persistent finale. This lovely effort needs to develop better depth, but more should develop if it's allowed at least a few years to mellow in a cool cellar."Allen Meadows, Burghound ♥ Outstanding

I first tried Hubert Lignier's wines back in the 1990's & have never looked back! "A neighbour of Clos Baulet, this clay terroir at the bottom of a slope gives us more dense, tannic wines. Sometimes austere in its youth, it gradually takes on a fruity character accompanied by smoky or spicy notes." From Laurent Lignier

A discreet but not invisible hint of volatile acidity adds lift to the well-layered nose of black cherry, violet, lavender and subtle earth and spice hints. The muscular and energetic broad-shouldered flavors offer excellent punch and depth on the driving and firmly structured finish. Assuming that the VA remains at its current level, it shouldn't be more than a background element.Allen Meadows, Burghound
