Côte du Beaune

Meursault

Meursault is one of the three great White Burgundy villages along with Chassagne & Puligny. Many would argue that there are a few other villages vying to join the three.

Sandwiched between Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay, Meursault’s wines naturally vary from plot to plot, they have the potential to show the polar opposites of richness through to great elegance and delicacy. Soil composition and exposure providing great diversity.

For mine the most exciting Meursault wines show a delicacy, transparency, weightlessness with tension while still have a depth and length of flavour to match their standing in the hierarchy from Bourgogne to 1er Cru. Meursault having no Grand Cru vineyards.

98% of Meursault’s production is white wine.  Whilst it has no Grand Cru’s. It has a cluster of Premier Cru’s next to Puligny-Montrachet and a second cluster next to Volnay.

The Appellation used to describe the wines depends on the variety, Pinot or Chardonnay, and the adjacent Appellation. For example, the cluster next to Volnay uses the Appellation Volnay-Santenot for the red Premier Cru’s. This makes sense when you consider the reputation for reds from Volnay. Whites from the same area use Meursault Premier Cru.

The key on the map details all of the different naming conventions.

Look out for the White Meursalt Premier Cru’s Charmes, Perriers, and, Genevrières. The best-known producers are Roulot, Comte Lafon & Coche Dury. There are many others making stunning wines.

In total there are 18 Premier Crus.

“The 2022 Meursault Clos du Cromin may lack a bit of bandwidth on the nose: quite strict citric fruit, a touch of grass clippings, and a bit closed on the day. The palate is well-balanced with good depth on the entry, orange rind, tangerine and grapefruit towards the long, if slightly attenuated, finish.”Neal Martin, Vinous 87-89 Points JM 90-92*Check out Patrick Javillier's Meursault Clos du Cromin too!

Domaine Henri Germain Côte d’Or Blanc 2018

Chardonnay | Meursault, Burgundy

"A notably ripe yet still attractively fresh nose flashes a hint of exotic fruit character on the notes of white peach, poached pear and whiff of lychee. There is once again very good energy to the delicious, round and rich flavors that also deliver fine length on the clean and dry finish."Allen Meadows, Burghound

Bourgogne from Meursault Vineyards! A discreet application of wood is present on the similar nose but with a bit more citrus influence. There is excellent energy and detail to the slightly more concentrated middle weight flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the complex, lingering and balanced finale. This consistently boxes above its weight, and it is particularly good in 2020. Outstanding Top value ♥ 2026+Allen Meadows, Burghound 88 Points

Domaine Henri Germain Côte d’Or Blanc 2022

“Bright and fleshy, the 2022 Bourgogne Côte d'Or offers up aromas of pear, yellow orchard fruit, white flowers and almond paste, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny palate with excellent concentration and cut.” William Kelly, The Wine Advocate 88-90 Points“The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc Côte d'Or is matured entirely in barrel for 12 months and four months in vat. It has a well-defined bouquet with apple blossom, quince and touches of forest floor. The palate is well-

Domaine Patrick Javillier Meursault 2018

Chardonnay | Meursault, Côte du Beaune

This is a new Javillier cuvee and as such has not had the chance for review.“It is a blend of several selected plots in Meursault. This wine shows great aromatic power with a good acid balance. It is a structured wine with a long finish. The 2018 vintage is characterized by the power but above all the elegance.”Marion Javillier

Stepping up from the Bourgogne level wines in a big way. Building tension length and depth. Again excellent composure, tighter now as it should be. Give this 12 months and you’ll be in a very happy place. Entrancing nice white flowers on grapefruit. A little more energy. Excellent texture, chalky phenolic acid complex that works brilliantly. An edge of grapefruit esque bitterness. A wonderful fine example. The mid-palate depth is the thing that demonstrates the step up in quality here.

Here the more expressive nose offers another small step up in aromatic elegance with its cool aromas of spiced jasmine tea, essence of pear and wet stone. The intense and delineated middle weight flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality that coats the palate on the linear and beautifully long finish. This is a classic Tillets of lace and grace. ♥ 2025+Burghound

Domaine Henri Germain Meursault 2022

Chardonnay | Meursault, Burgundy

“The 2022 Meursault Village is ample and generous, wafting from the glass with notes of pear, clear honey, green apple and bread dough. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a rich core of fruit girdled by lively acids, it concludes with a saline finish.” William Kelly, The Wine Advocate 90-92 Points“The 2022 Meursault Village comes from a single parcel just below Chevalier. The generous bouquet offers patisserie, subtle melon and Clementine aromas, very intense yet well-d

Tasting this I reflected back on Allen Meadows note, couldn't put it better myself. Loads of fun to be had here! Now the 3rd white I've tried from Javillier the thread has been delicacy, transluscence with wonderfully weighted flavours. From Les Clous and Crotots. “Once again, the nose is cool and restrained with its aromas of green fruit, mineral reduction, citrus peel and an interesting hint of quinine. "A slightly riper nose offers up aromas of white peach, lemongrass, hazelnut and spice hints that are in keeping with the equally ripe, round and nicely rich medium-bodied flavors that aren't quite as refined, all wrapped in a delicious and more complex finish. In a word, excellent."Allen Meadows, Burghound

There is a vague whiff of the exotic to the ripe, fresh and pretty aromas of roasted nut, mineral reduction, white peach and tangerine peel. There is superb intensity and cut to the dense and tautly muscular medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the youthfully austere and impressively persistent and distinctly lemony finish. This is terrific for its level and recommended. Outstanding Top value ♥ 2026+Allen Meadows, Burghound 91 Points
