Chambolle-Musigny

Chambolle-Musigny lies on the southern border of Morey-Saint-Denis. Its AOC status dates from September 1936, making it one of the first French vineyards to be designated.

Like Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny is completely planted to Pinot Noir. However, the styles associated with the respective appellations present an intriguing contrast. Where Gevrey-Chambertin has a reputation for powerful, structured Pinot Noirs, Chambolle-Musigny typically offers more delicate expressions. This is not to suggest that Chambolle-Musigny is a wilting violet; rather its intensity manifests in more subtly, with soft tannins and pretty aromatics.

Chambolle-Musigny is home to two superb Grands Crus: Bonnes-Mares, which links its vineyards to those of Morey-Saint-Denis, and the great Musigny vineyard, which overlooks the Clos de Vougeot. The village also boasts among its fine wines the prestigious Premier Cru, Les Amoureuses.

The appellation’s sloping vineyards face east at altitudes of 250-300 metres with only a shallow covering of soil overlying the parent rock, but fissures in the hard Jurassic limestone allow the roots to seek nourishment deep within the sub-soil. Boulders and gravels in the valley bottom ensure good drainage.

A very fresh and, as one might expect, this possesses the spiciest nose to this point with its wonderfully floral red berry fruit aromas. The borderline painfully intense flavors possess a super-sleek and chiseled mouthfeel that is akin to rolling small rocks around the mouth on the dusty, moderately austere, compact and built-to-age finale. I would strongly recommend not touching a bottle of this beauty before at least 10 years have passed. 2034+ ♥ Sweet spot OutstandingAllen Meadows, Bur

Here too the nose is overtly floral in character with its layered blend of red and dark raspberry, warm earth and discreet spice wisps. There is again very fine mid-palate density to the slightly bigger-bodied tension-filled flavors that flash evident muscle and power on the moderately austere, firmly structured and impressively long finish. Patience strongly advised. 2035+ (from a .24 ha mix of two-thirds terres rouges and one-third terres blanches).Allen Meadows, Burghound 91-94 Points

There is ample earth character to the markedly floral-scented nose of various red berries, soft wood and a hint of smoked game. The beautifully textured, if not particularly concentrated middleweight flavors possess excellent vibrancy as well as focused power that seems to build on the beautifully long finish that really tightens up as it sits on the palate. This is a deceptive wine in that it seems a bit light but delivers superb flavor authority. (from a .70 ha parcel of vines near the Morey b

The 2021 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is a real success, soaring from the glass with aromas of raspberries, peonies, exotic spices, loamy soil, orange zest and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a satiny attack and a seamless, sensual mid-palate, it concludes with a long, perfumed finish.William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 94-95 Points BH 94

The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru is terrific, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries, orange zest, sweet spices, rose petals and licorice, followed by a full-bodied, rich and layered palate that's impressively muscular and multidimensional, built around ripe tannins and lively acids, and concluding with a long, expansive finish.William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 94-96 Points BH 94

An admirably subtle touch of wood serves as a backdrop for the exuberantly floral-infused and perfumed nose that offers up notes of exotic spice, poached plum and jasmine tea. The equally tautly muscular yet refined and lilting flavors are blessed with excellent punch and power while exhibiting a pungent minerality on the hugely long built-to-age finish. This refined effort is both stylish and very classy. (from two parcels totaling .21 ha; 100% whole clusters) 2037+Allen Meadows, Burghound
