Chambolle-Musigny

Chambolle-Musigny lies on the southern border of Morey-Saint-Denis. Its AOC status dates from September 1936, making it one of the first French vineyards to be designated.

Like Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny is completely planted to Pinot Noir. However, the styles associated with the respective appellations present an intriguing contrast. Where Gevrey-Chambertin has a reputation for powerful, structured Pinot Noirs, Chambolle-Musigny typically offers more delicate expressions. This is not to suggest that Chambolle-Musigny is a wilting violet; rather its intensity manifests in more subtly, with soft tannins and pretty aromatics.

Chambolle-Musigny is home to two superb Grands Crus: Bonnes-Mares, which links its vineyards to those of Morey-Saint-Denis, and the great Musigny vineyard, which overlooks the Clos de Vougeot. The village also boasts among its fine wines the prestigious Premier Cru, Les Amoureuses.

The appellation’s sloping vineyards face east at altitudes of 250-300 metres with only a shallow covering of soil overlying the parent rock, but fissures in the hard Jurassic limestone allow the roots to seek nourishment deep within the sub-soil. Boulders and gravels in the valley bottom ensure good drainage.

Ripe, elegant and softly spicy aromas include those of various dark berries, violet, lavender and a hint of exotic tea. There is again fine volume to the caressing but punchy medium weight flavors that possess a more sophisticated texture but not necessarily better depth on the youthfully austere finale. Note that there is enough underlying material as well as supporting tannins to suggest that this should add complexity with a few years of bottle age. Allen Meadows, Burghound 89 Points ♥ O

Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron Chambolle-Musigny 2019

Pinot Noir | Chambolle-Musigny, France

“Les Condemennes ripens very quickly but now they know and pick here first. Rich purple, with a bouquet to follow suit. Sunny ripe dark fruit but less exaggerated than the 2018 last year. Stops short of raisins but will suit those who like the riper side. Fair length, slightly less acidity, but attractive, and balanced enough.” Jasper Morris

Domaine Hubert Lignier Chambolle-Musigny Vielles Vignes 2017

Pinot Noir | Chambolle-Musigny, France

A more elegant if not fresher nose reflects notes of dark cherry, earth and a touch of humus, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. As one would expect given the old vines, the medium weight flavors possess both more volume and concentration before concluding in a firm, compact and lingering finish that also flashes a touch of rusticity. Domaine Hubert Lignier Chambolle-Musigny Vielles Vignes 2018

Pinot Noir | Chambolle-Musigny, France

Produced from purchased fruit and vinified with one-third whole clusters, the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes (négoce) bursts with aromas of raspberries, berries, woodsmoke and sweet soil tones. It's medium to full-bodied, succulent and fine-boned, with a delicate core of fruit framed by powdery tannins. William Kelley, Parker's Wine Advocate

Here the nose is noticeably riper yet still agreeably fresh with its array darker berries, spice and discreet floral hints, especially violet. The middleweight flavors are rich to the point of opulence thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that enrobes the supporting tannins on the sneaky long finish. This is a very good wine for its level though it would be fair to observe that it's not a typical Chambolle villages. Drink 2026+ Allen Meadows, Burghound 89 Points ♥ Ou

Check out Burghound's review! Laurent Ponsot has farmed a tiny 0.31 of a hectare in Chambolle since 2002. The Domaine Ponsot bottling was called Cuvée des Cigales and, in spite of our protestations, the wine from this vineyard has never made the trip to Australia—until now. Burghound must have tasted this at a different stage to us as what we encountered was a beautifully rich and layered red Chambolle that was at the same time classically detailed and floral, yet with the opulence and text
Aromas of sweet berries, plums, peonies, orange rind and raw cocoa introduce the 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes (négoce), a medium to full-bodied, ample and perfumed wine built around lively acids and velvety tannins. This has turned out especially well. William Kelley, Parker's Wine Advocate 89-91 Points

I had Faiveley's 2015 Latricières Chambertin recently, delicious, perfumed elegant and refined. Along with the 2015, I devoured a brace of 2016's from across the appellations. They are really stepping up their game, the investments in the vineyard and winery are a testament to this.

Initially there is a touch of reduction though aggressive swirling slowly reveals overtly floral-suffused nose that is comprised mostly by attractively spicy red and dark berries aromas. There is excellent volume to the rich but appealingly delineated medium-bodied flavors that also exude a subtle minerality on the mildly austere, firm and sneaky long finish. It is next to the Premier Cru "les Borniques" to the east and to the south, about fifty meters from the Grand Cru "le Musigny". Situated on reddish brown clays rich in iron oxides on about 30 cm then we find very quickly the limestones of Chambolle Musigny. Its north-east exposure and the influence of the combe mixed with its limestone soil gives a great freshness to this chambolle. The global warming in our vineyards of these last vintages are very well suited to this colder terroir of or

A slightly more elegant nose features notes of poached plum, black raspberry, violet and anise hints. A perfumed and strikingly pretty nose is at once wonderfully floral and spicy with its fresh essence of red pinot fruit.
