Burgundy

Burgundy, the mythical home of wines made from Pinot Noir & Chardonnay … don’t forget AligotéGammay too!

Located in the middle of France on the eastern side. There is no other wine region that has been defined in such incredible detail. Each vineyard has been named and classified. Within these vineyards their are also Lieux Dits  referring to a specific part of a vineyard or region recognized for its own topographic or historical specificities.

This detailed definition allows for the equally detailed exploration of terroir. Hereditary tittle law in France has seen vineyards split between siblings generation after generation. Many incredibly small parcels producing only enough grapes to yield a single barrel of wine exist. This further extends our ability to see terroir in action vs the hand of the maker with many of the great vineyards having dozens of owners each producing minuscule volumes of wine.

The opportunity to taste them side by side is becoming increasingly difficult as scarcity drives prices up!

The most famous and coveted wines are the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of the Côte de Nuits and Côte du Beaune. Together they form a narrow escarpment running north-south over a distances of less than 50kms.

Much further north the Chardonnay from Chablis stands comfortably on it’s own two feet with some delicious mineral, fine wines with insane ability to age.

To the south excellent wines are produced in the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais, home to Chardonnays of exceptional value & personality.

Further again the Gammay from Beaujolais represents some of the beast value wines from Burgundy.

We’ve shared a series of articles in the Wine Bites Mag “Getting Your Head Around Burgundy” deep diving into the region.

Where marginal climate saw a high proportion of tough vintages in Burgundy. In ability to rippen grapes is less often a problem today. Catastrophic frosts and hail storms more of an issue.

“A dollop of wood sets off a ripe mix of both white and yellow orchard fruit laced with nuances of iodine and seashore. There is fine mid-palate density to the intense and saline-suffused flavors that terminate in an agreeably clean and dry finish. This could use better depth but since it always seems to age extremely well, more should develop if giving a chance. Worth checking out.❤️ Outstanding ”Burghound

“A deft touch of wood sets off the ripe aromas of white orchard fruit, sea breeze and a hint of shellfish. The delicious and slightly richer flavors possess a touch more volume on the seductively textured, mouth coating and firmer finale. This is also lovely for its level and worth checking out." A vibrant, energetic core of long even fruit layered and complex, particularly for a wine at this price point. A fine fragrance, and delicate perfume entance. Sophistication tannins and playful cleansing edge and a little spice. It will certainly benefit from a day open or an early decant in its youth. Juicy, thirst-quenching and simply delicious. Plenty more to come from a very, very good wine!Paul Kaan, Wine Decoded Sept 2024The 2022 Rully du Clos de Bellecroix Cuvée Marey comes f

The 2023 Bouzeron has a vivacious nose that boldly declares, "I am Aligoté!" The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity and beautiful weight in the mouth, featuring hints of lemon curd, white peach and Anjou pear toward the poised finish. You'll find few Bouzerons better than this. Neal Martin, Vinous 91 PointsVery ethereal, both citrus and floral, our Bouzeron 2023 offers notes of white-fleshed fruits on the palate. The 2023 Rully du Clos de Bellecroix Cuvée Marey, raised in 25% new oak, has more intensity on the nose than the regular cuvée. Blackcurrant and raspberry open, leaning more toward the latter as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, lightly spiced with a dash of black pepper toward the finish. Enjoy this over the next decade. Drink: 2026-2036Neal Martin, Vinous 90 PointsAged in ex-white barrels. Super fun vino, with a lick of spice. Excellent fruit

Deep crimson, quite deep colour. The nose is layered with berry fruit, raspberry, wild strawberry, cassis and briary fruit. There is lovely perfume lift and a purity of fruit, a good lick of new oak just appears, it is a super fresh and delineated wineThe palate is beautifully balanced and finely structured with spice, red berry loads of silky tannins and a long driven finish. “Bright and fleshy, the 2022 Bourgogne Côte d'Or offers up aromas of pear, yellow orchard fruit, white flowers and almond paste, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny palate with excellent concentration and cut.” William Kelly, The Wine Advocate 88-90 Points“The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc Côte d'Or is matured entirely in barrel for 12 months and four months in vat. Here too there is a mentholated top note present on the more sauvage and forest floor nuanced aromas of red and dark currant. I very much like the sense of underlying tension suffusing the even more mineral-driven middle weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine shaping the beautifully long finale. This serious, austere and compact effort is quite tightly wound and a wine that is unlikely to make for especially interesting drinking young; then a

Earthy, savoury, delicate spice, sitting beautifully with darker fruits and more apparent stalk tannin. The acid, tannin, alcohol complex working beautifully. A ripping edition of this perennial favourite. As with the other Cuvées it's more immediate approachability than previous vintages. I typically find Bouland's wines need at least 18 months to 2 year to resolve and for their tension to relax following bottling. This will undoubtedly offer more with time in bottle.

Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue Cailloux MAGNUM 2023
Ridiculous Yields!
Of the two Bellevue Cuvées, the Cailloux has better balance and energy with a touch less alcohol and a touch more acid. Excellent darker, earthier profile than the Chiroubles. Beautifully weighted, plump fruit with a spice layer and just a little playful stalk tannin grip keeping the palate lively and, with that fine line of acid, refreshing. Any excellent rendition and like the other 2023's more immediate approachability than previous vintages. I typically find Bouland's wines need at least 18
