Burgundy

Burgundy, the mythical home of wines made from Pinot Noir & Chardonnay … don’t forget AligotéGammay too!

Located in the middle of France on the eastern side. There is no other wine region that has been defined in such incredible detail. Each vineyard has been named and classified. Within these vineyards their are also Lieux Dits  referring to a specific part of a vineyard or region recognized for its own topographic or historical specificities.

This detailed definition allows for the equally detailed exploration of terroir. Hereditary tittle law in France has seen vineyards split between siblings generation after generation. Many incredibly small parcels producing only enough grapes to yield a single barrel of wine exist. This further extends our ability to see terroir in action vs the hand of the maker with many of the great vineyards having dozens of owners each producing minuscule volumes of wine.

The opportunity to taste them side by side is becoming increasingly difficult as scarcity drives prices up!

The most famous and coveted wines are the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of the Côte de Nuits and Côte du Beaune. Together they form a narrow escarpment running north-south over a distances of less than 50kms.

Much further north the Chardonnay from Chablis stands comfortably on it’s own two feet with some delicious mineral, fine wines with insane ability to age.

To the south excellent wines are produced in the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais, home to Chardonnays of exceptional value & personality.

Further again the Gammay from Beaujolais represents some of the beast value wines from Burgundy.

We’ve shared a series of articles in the Wine Bites Mag “Getting Your Head Around Burgundy” deep diving into the region.

Where marginal climate saw a high proportion of tough vintages in Burgundy. In ability to rippen grapes is less often a problem today. Catastrophic frosts and hail storms more of an issue.

Crimson color. There is more new oak here to be seen of first impressions that elevate the overall complexity and class of the aromas, it is amply carried by the depth of fruit, wild strawberry, black cherry, blackberry and plum with a brooding background. The palate is suitably concentrated with ample extract and structure that has layers of fruit and texture. Very classy effort. The finish long and fragrant.Drink 2027-2040Tom Carson

Les Pargues is a Chablis lieu-dit situated on a ridge between Montmains and Vosgros. It has the same exposure as the 1er Crus of Vaillons and Montmains, so it’s a very handy site. The story goes that this site was originally classified as a 1er Cru level vineyard (pre-AOC), before being largely abandoned during WWI (when there was a labour shortage). Regardless of this story, locals rightly speak very highly of this site. The vines in Moreau’s tiny parcel average 50-plus years old and 15-

Old vine depth & persistence
Hallmark Guillard length, depth, energy and juicy natural acid. A bolder incarnation than the highly perfumed 2019. Still very much brooding, demanding time. Everything is in it's place. As usual the tannin quality and mouthfeel are superb. Patience! This will be stunning in 15+ years needing at least 5 to starting showing its full potential.Deep crimson deep purple tints, very deep color. Notes of oak toast and menthol surround the moderately high-toned aromas of red and dark cherry, plum and warm earth. There is terrific intensity to the vibrant, intense and well-detailed medium weight flavors that also brim with minerality on the even more compact, austere and firmly constituted finale. The quality is excellent though I underscore that this is presently a block of stone and it would be largely pointless to open a bottle before at least 7 to 8 years have passed. Dinrk: 2034+ ♥

A domaine wine composed of <40% Butteaux plus some Forêts and Montmains proper in roughly equal amounts.Consisting of roughly equal parts Montmains, Butteaux and Forêts (the three sous-climats of Montmains), the 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Montmains offers up aromas of crisp green apple, white flowers, bee pollen and oyster shell. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, it’s taut and precise, concluding with a saline finish. Drink: 2023 - 2045William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

From a huge 3.5 ha holding that is composed by <75% Vaillons proper with the remainder from Roncières, Mélinots and Châtains. Here too there is a vague suggestion of the exotic on the slightly riper aromas of pear compote, ocean spray, iodine and wet stone. The rich, vibrant and palate coating flavors are also supported by bright acidity that carries over to the wonderfully long, youthfully austere and firm finale. Dureuil’s village Rully is drawn from three organically managed plots—Le Meix Cadot, Rosey and Montagne de Remenot—which cover just under three hectares in total. The average age of these vines is now 50 years. Janthial uses a Jayer-esque pre-ferment cold soak to extract the prettiest aromas and softer tannin. Touchstone Rully.

The 2022 Rully Village is a blend of four lieux-dits with vines planted between 2006 and 1920. The slightly waxy, apple blossom-scented bouquet only gradually opens in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is well-balanced with a sapid entry, very energetic and citrus-fresh with orange cordial and nectarine notes towards the focused, playful finish. This will be impossible to resist once in bottle (like usual).Neal Martin, Vinous 90-92 Points

Discreet wood influence surrounds the ripe aromas of just turned earth and poached plum. The supple, delicious and pliant medium weight flavors are not particularly dense but they still manage to be seductive, which contrasts noticeably with the frankly rustic if lingering finish. This should also repay short to mid-term keeping. Drink 2027+Allen Meadows, Burghound 88 PointsThe 2022 Rully Rouge Village is a blend of three parcels. Laurent Tribut Chablis 2022

Chardonnay | France, Burgundy

An agreeably fresh nose speaks of various white orchard fruit, citrus peel and a hint of oyster shell. The caressing and delicious but solidly punchy middleweight flavors possess good length on the balanced, clean and moderately dry finale. This attractive effort should drink well young as well as age over the mid-term. Drink 2026+Allen Meadows, Burghound 88-91 PointsLimit 2
