Burgundy

Beaujolais

Beaujolais is the home of Gamay AKA Gamay Noir!

The southernmost region of Burgundy is planted just to the south of the Mâcon. From an ocean of Beaujolais Nouveau released just months after harvest, it climbs to a pinnacle with Cru Beaujolais that can rival the Pinot Noir of the Côte du Beaune & the Côte de Nuits in both complexity, longevity and drinking pleasure.

It’s no wonder we’ve seen a number of makers from these northern Burgundy regions come play in Beuajolais.

Like any region you’ll fine a spectrum of style dictated partly by the vineyard and the winemaking yielding anything from elegant, finessed wines to much bolder incarnations.

Wholebunch use during fermentation is a notable component of much of the making in Beaujolais.

There are 3 classification in Beaujolais.

1. Beaujolais – Generic Beaujolais. much of this goes into Beaujolais Nouveau.

2. Beaujolais Village – The mid-Tier split between a portion of Beaujolais Nouveau and more serious wine released the following year.

3. Beaujolais Cru – The best gear we like to play with.

There are 10 Cru’s.

Daniel Bouland Morgon Délys 2022

Gamay Noir | Morgon, Beaujolais

Super refined and long with the finish offering all kinds of florals and exotic spice! I haven't had a chance to taste these and reviews aren't out yet. Given the consistency and the comments on the vintage below from Bouland and Morris they're just a no brainer. One of the wineries I buy from each year without hesitation. Expect them to have an extra degree of sophistication compared with other recent releases. Wine specific importer notes below. Even Bouland himself struggled to find

Last Bottles of Daniel Bouland 2021's

Boulands wines need an extra year or 2 of bottles age to resolve and start to show their form after 5 years.

"Opening in the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums, spices and smoke, the 2021 Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Melanie is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with a sweet core of fruit, tangy acids, powdery tannins and penetrating finish. It's one example of a 2021 that I prefer to its riper, more powerful 2020 counterpart." William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 92 Points

"One cuvée that really doesn't miss a beat in this more challenging vintage is the 2021 Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes Sable, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine evocative of plums, sweet berries, spices and forest floor. Layered and concentrated, with an enveloping core of fruit and melting tannins, it will delight readers nostalgic for more classically proportioned Beaujolais." This wine used to come to us simply as Morgon Vieilles Vignes, without the name of the vineyard or lieu-dit. It comes from a single hectare of 93-year-old vines located on the Morgon-Chiroubles border, at the end of the Corcelette valley in a terroir historically known as Delys. Bouland’s vines were planted in 1926 on a southeast-facing slope at 10,000 vines per hectare. Fresh vibrant juicy fruit, juicy acid, beetroot on cherry. Delightful, elegant, savoury playful, could get cerebral if you want but don’t have to. 35-90 year old vine. Energy, lovely fine texture, with veil of ever so slightly dusty tannins. Heart shaped fruit tapering with delicacy into a long finish. Excellent contrast to the power of Morgon, the finess and elegance of Fleurie at play.

I thought Bouland, Thivin & Foillard were good! Judging by the not so 'standard' Côte du Py and the 'James' from 2018, this will be stunning. I thought Bouland, Thivin & Foillard were good! Superb Morgon. Jean-Marc’s Cote du Py is a cracker. So what do you get for coin when you head to the ‘James’? The answer … extra layers. Extra layers of flavour, layers of tannin. Yes, it’s bolder than the 2019 Cote du Py, yet it retains an elegance of fruit. The extra year has seen it relax a little, still tight though. It will reward you with time. 3 years will make an incredible difference. 5 more, although it’s hard not to resist ta
