Vajra Barolo ‘Coste di Rose’ 2017

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

The 2017 Barolo Coste di Rose is pretty, supple and inviting. Some of the tannins need to resolve, but this is a young Barolo after all. The Coste di Rose doesn't have the sensuality of the Albe or the pedigree of the Viole, but it nevertheless has so much to give. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint, crushed rocks and sage are some of the many notes that linger. I won't be surprised if the 2017 is even better than this note suggests once it softens a bit.  Galloni

Vajra Barolo ‘Coste di Rose’ 2015

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Coste di Rose is possibly the most approachable cru of Barolo at this stage, with roses and a floral-dominated nose, combined with marasca cherry and hints of licorice and mint. A very elegant and pleasurable structure that flows gracefully on the palate with a lingering and sapid finish. Nomen omen.  Giuseppe Vaira

The 2017 Barolo Via Nuova is a blend of seven plots, many of which you will have seen as Cru wines from other makers. From the Commune of Barolo: Terlo, Liste, Paiagallo. 2020 Barolos have been showing very tightly coiled in their youth across the vintage. There have been notable exceptions. Canonica's Paiagallo and Magheritta Otto's Barolo both have a core of fruit that is shining, expressive and inviting.Canonica's 2020 Paiagallo will still need a few years to reveal its considerable potential. I suspect we will look back on 2020 as an underrated vintage in time. Although 15% on the label, there is no imbalance or over-ripeness here. Fully flavoured, savour

Vajra Barolo ‘Bricco delle Viole’ 2020

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

The 2020 Barolo Bricco delle Viole, Vajra's flagship, is very fine. Dark cherry, kirsch, blood orange, spice and lavender are nicely amplified. The 2020 is gracious and elegant, but its youthful Nebbiolo tannins will require some time to soften. The 2020 is another wine that captures my keen interests with its sublime balance. I would be thrilled to own it.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96 Points ML 95

Fenocchio's Castellero comes from a cooler site east facing site. With similar soils to Cannubi. Darker fruited than Cannubi. Ripe, layered, nutty tannins, with an elegant, composed wine with a dark edge, lovely acidity support perfectly weighted core of fruit with a balanced richness. Claudio's preference is to harvest on the earlier side, whilst making sure the tannins are suitably ripe for the vintage. It shows here in the energey of fine texture of the wine.Tasting this alongside a 2019

Vajra Barolo ‘Bricco delle Viole’ 2021

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

What a wine! So complete, incredible, layered complex, beautifully perfumed with the earth, slate and undergrowth to balance it. The very definition of a complete Barolo. The acid tannin complex is impeccable. The core and length of fruit is divine. Simply so much going on. Savoury, dark, brooding this will be a special wine with time in bottle. A lacing of the finest black tea supporting exceptional tannins. There are not enough superlatives.Paul Kaan, Wine DecodedThe organic G.D. V

Margherita Otto ‘M8’ Barolo 2018

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Italy

This one's another argument for blending sites! From a disciple of Maria Theresa Mascarello. The 2018 M8 is a blend of Castiglione Falletto, Monforte & Serralunga fruit! "Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Lifted, perfumed red fruit of great appeal with complex, minty oak notes. A mouthful of juicy cherry fruit with supple acidity and fantastic, crunchy tannins. Freshness and bite combined with elegance. Hugely appealing."Walter Speller, Jancis
