Feinherb


While there is no strict definition, nor is it legally defined within German wine law, many growers use Feinherb to indicate quality wines that are off-dry. Today it is commonly used in place of the less popular designation ‘halbtrocken’.

Feinherb is a traditional German term that indicates quality. It has been permitted on German wine labels since 2000 but is actually part of an older set of terms used to describe the sweetness and quality of German Rieslings. While there is no strict definition, nor is it legally defined within German wine law, many growers use it for quality wines that are off-dry. Feinherb is often used in place of the less popular traditional designation ‘halbtrocken’, as well as for wines that are slightly sweeter than regulations dictate for halbtrocken wines.

Jean-Paul et Benôit Droin Chablis 2021

Chardonnay | Chablis, Burgundy

This is aromatically similar to the Petit Chablis though with more citrus elements in evidence. There is again good richness to the succulent and rounded medium-weight flavors that also exude a refreshing salinity on the clean, moderately dry and sneaky long finish that is slightly firmer. This is Mortet’s ‘super Gevrey’ and comes from a clutch of five brilliantly placed plots that Denis Mortet deliberately chose for the quality of their terroirs and vines. Moderately generous wood frames the intensely floral and fresh aromas of dark berries, violet, plum and earth. The rich and strikingly vibrant middle weight flavors exhibit evident muscle and minerality along with very good power on the lingering and very firm finish that is shaped by grippy and somewhat coarse tannins. My sense is that this may become less overtly rustic as the tannins resolve though with that said this is unlikely to ever be particularly refined. Burghound
