Complantation


Complantation is the practice of planting multiple grape varieties in a single terroir. It is the oldest form of viticulture known before the appearance of clones and the depletion of biodiversity. It ensures regular harvests by creating a complex and naturalist ecosystem.

Complantation is the practice of planting multiple grape varieties in a single terroir. It is the oldest form of viticulture known before the appearance of clones and the depletion of biodiversity. It ensures regular harvests by creating a complex and naturalist ecosystem.

Wines produced using complantation are commonly known as field blends. The grapes grown together in the same field or vineyard, then picked and fermented at the same time. These unique wines are different than the typical blends we know today, like those of Bordeaux, where grapes are grown and vinified separately.

Many complantation vineyards are well-established and have likely come into being through massal selection, the practice of replanting new vineyards with cuttings from exception old vines from the same or nearby vineyards. Today, this traditional method of vineyard propagation has been replaced with clonal selection, where a vineyard is propagated by vines from a vine clone nursery.

A new generation of winemakers, such as Alsatian Marcel Deiss, are making the shift towards complantation due to its long-term benefits of increasing genetic variation among vines, improving biodiversity in the surround ecosystem and producing more unique wines that better reflection of the locale terroir.

A Divine Expression! This builds nicely in the glass, as a young wine, and has a presence and length about it. A full mid-palate carries through with excellent persistence. The energy of 2018 is present with fine acid and a complex set of intriguing flavours, a background resinous note over savoury, truffled fruit that has been beautifully developed draws you in. There’s some clever thinking in the making here.

Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans 2020

Pinot Noir | Volnay, Côte du Beaune

‘Mitans’ derives from the old French for centre, and this is likely the source of the name as this Cru lies at the heart of the appellation (on the slopes beneath the village). This 0.65-hectare parcel is close to the Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre and encroaches into the Mitans l’Ormeau lieu-dit. The soil here is fine clay shot through with limestone, and the vines are, on average, 50 years old. Just a pinch of whole bunch this year. Les Mitans is considered one of the most elegan

Pretty, fine, long, textured & rich. Quince fruit with lovely caressing phenolics & a refreshing finish. A faint lick of green leafy herbs chervil or tarragon. Fine, a lovely pithy finish cleansing with a little bitterness. Wild ferment in 1200 stockingers 600 barrels. Fresh & thirst-quenching. Opened beautifully in the glass. Yum!
