“The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Angles is sensual and charming, bursting from the glass with aromas of plums, raw cocoa, sweet spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, it's lively and textural, with a broad attack and a long, expansive finish.” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 92 Points  JM 90-93

Paolo Scavino Barolo ‘Ravera’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Italy

The 2019 Barolo Ravera is a striking, vivid wine. Crushed rose petal, mint, orange peel and white pepper lend an exotic flair. Tightly-wound and nervy, but with notable depth, the 2019 is classic Ravera through and though. I would give it a few years to soften, as the acids and tannins are both very youthfully vibrant. Clean mineral notes frame the intensely saline, taut finish.  Drink 2029-2039 Antonio Galloni, Vinous 95 Points With fruit from the village of Novello, this wine is mor

Paolo Scavino Barolo ‘Movigliero’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Verduno, Italy

This Cru is the jewel in the crown of the Commune of Verduno in Barolo! The 2019 Barolo Monvigliero is a gorgeous wine that marries the classicism of this site with the bright, forward fruit that is such a signature of the Scavino style. Freshly-cut roses, kirsch, mint, cinnamon and blood orange race across the palate, supported by vibrant acids and veins of sinewy tannin. This seems to call for at least a few years in bottle. About Domaine Marc-Antonin Blain Marc-Antonin Blain, son of Jean-Marc and Claudine, grew up among the vineyards of Chassagne, but it was the vintages he spent abroad in Australia and New Zealand that inspired his passion for winemaking. Margherita Otto ‘M8’ Barolo 2017

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

This one's another argument for blending sites! From a disciple of Maria Theresa Mascarello. The 2017 M8 is a blend of Castiglione Falletto, Monforte & Serralunga fruit! I rarely buy wine site unseen. I did so with the 2016 M8. I couldn’t resist! The story and experience behind Allan Manley’s launch of his own venture has seen him work with a veritable who’s who of Barolo ending with Maria Theresa Mascarello where he still works. As you might expect he’s a proponent of blended Barolo vs
A wonderfully spicy nose offers up its aromas of both red and dark raspberry, violet and soft floral nuances. There is once again a lovely texture along with fine detail to the more refined middle weight flavors that deliver very good persistence on the youthfully austere and slightly grippy finale. 2030+ Allen Meadows, Burghound

Albino Rocca ‘Angelo’ Barbaresco 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

In hommage to Angelo this goes back to his father’s days when blending was the norm. A truly beautiful blend. The gentle fruit handling and longer maceration or lunga macerazione (55 days here) has yielded a lovely perfume, a savoury core of fruit with delicacy and persistence. The tannins are wonderful. There’s a little truffle, a little liquorice, a little of lots of things coming to play. This is a wine worthy of being a hommage! Each parcel is picked separately, 3-4 days apart, and added

Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2018

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Chianti Classico

The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is quite possibly the most elegant, refined version of this wine I have ever tasted. It does not offer the immediacy or impact of either the 2015 or 2016, but, instead, impresses with its elegance, persistence and total class. Bright floral and spice notes add perfume to a core of red-toned fruit. The 2018 represents another move towards greater finesse at Fontodi. It spent a year in French oak barrel and a second year in cask. Antonio

Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo ‘Villero’ 2018

Nebbiolo | Castiglione Falletto, Italy

Grace under pressure! Castiglione Falletto shining through with those faded flower. Excellent long tannins of substance and sophistication. A beguiling core of fruit, brooding, yet, you can see what is to come. Flow and shape. It feels very complete. Fine and long. It has that intrigue that steps it up another notch. Very good. Earthy and truffled, serious stuff. Persistence has you taking note as it dances along. Rocche di Castiglione and Villero in Castiglione Falletto consistentlly sit amo

“The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards has turned out especially well. Opening in the glass with aromas of red berries and plums mingled with sweet soil tones, hints of raw cocoa and rose petals, it's  medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with terrific concentration and beautifully refined tannins. Boillot observes, and I agree, that this site's tannins have become much more refined over the last five years.” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 93 Points JM 91-93

Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron Chambolle-Musigny 2019

Pinot Noir | Chambolle-Musigny, France

“Les Condemennes ripens very quickly but now they know and pick here first. Rich purple, with a bouquet to follow suit. Sunny ripe dark fruit but less exaggerated than the 2018 last year. Stops short of raisins but will suit those who like the riper side. Fair length, slightly less acidity, but attractive, and balanced enough.” Jasper Morris

San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo IGT 2019

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Chianti Classico

One of the most celebrated expressions of Sangiovese on the market today is the San Giusto a Rentennano 2019 Percarlo. This organic wine has a hint of extra ripeness or richness that transcends the bouquet. You feel as if you can bite into the fruit, and indeed the 2019 vintage is recognized by its unique power and density (with a 15% alcohol content). It's a lot to take in, and there is enough lasting fiber and fruit power to fuel a long drinking window. This is one of the bigger and more opule

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis 2019

Pinot Noir | Morey-Saint-Denis, Burgundy

I first tried Hubert Lignier's wines back in the 1990's & have never looked back! Lignier is one of the latest to release their wines. The extra year really makes a difference as the wines resolve and come together. The Morey-Saint-Denis has the hallmark red fruit of the village. The depth and length are exceptional, what really makes this wine are the wonderfully refined texture, purity and vitality. It charms and entices you as the aromas with some background florals and spice lift from the

The first time we’ve managed to squeeze out an allocation of ‘San Francesco’ Saint Francesco. We are very happy! Stepping up to the two single vineyards the depth and length build. Darker and brooding, a slight reductive note washes away to reveal a savoury, truffled layer over those woody herbs. Slatey with mineral acids, sitting marginally prouder than in the other 2 Riservas and tannins of balanced grip. Finishing with lingering fruit. Given a decade the acid resolves this will

🇮🇹Benchmark Sangio🍷

Isole e Olena ‘Cepparello’ 2019

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Barberino Val d'Elsa

Isole e Olena's top wine. Always a pleasure. Year after year they seem to be drawing even more delicious expressions of Sangiovese from this special parcel of fruit! 'Cepparello' is named after the valley where the vineyard is planted. The last bottle I had of this was a 2006 a month ago, thanks Chris. It was superb, great harmony poise and balance. A real generosity to the wine. Beautiful secondary characters. Looking forward to trying the 2019. "One of the icon wines of Tuscany, the Iso

The 2nd time we’ve managed to squeeze out an allocation of ‘San Francesco’ Saint Francesco. We are very happy!   The 2018 Gattinara Riserva San Francesco is a wine of notable savory aromatic intensity. Fruit seems to be more in the background here, yet all the elements are so nicely balanced. There is a bit of new oak imprint at this stage, but time in the glass helps this open considerably. The San Francesco is a Gattinara of texture more than anything else. Drink 2026-2038
