Made from Nerello Mascelese, some call it the Barolo of the South, others a cross between Pinot & Nebbiolo. I prefer to say it is itself & delicious. The vineyards of Etna have undergone a major renaissance in the last couple of decades. Passipisciaro has been one of the wineries at the forefront. I was blown away the first time I tasted this wine. The 2015 has an incredible core of opulent fruit with the structure and acid so typical of the Passopisciaro wines.

Formerly Passopisciaro, Passorosso is made from the grapes of Nerello Mascalese, blending across different altitudes and soil types.
These wines are spectacular, loaded with personality, a true expression of extreme sites, they have an amazing perfume and despite their almost translucent colour have incredible depth and length of flavour. There’s a real tension between tannins that can be very supple yet a little edgy. They are always layered with so many flavours that it’s had to pull them apart. My tip, don’t, harmony should just be enjoyed without over thinking it!

“Bright red. Perfumed aromas of rose and violet are complicated by cinnamon. Fresh, juicy and precise, with a hint of chlorophyll and menthol. Vibrant and very long with a persistent herbal note on the very floral, perfumed finish. 100% Nerello Mascalese grown in different contrade (about 60% from Guardiola, the rest is from Chiappemacine, Malpasso, and Favazza located within Calderara and Feudo di Mezzo). This became an Etna Rosso with the 2014 vintage.”
The 2015 Passorosso is a lovely 100% Nerello Mascalese from Andrea Franchetti, which displays a light translucent color, followed by lively aromatics of fresh strawberries, wild herbs, exotic spices, orange zest and crushed stones all taking shape in this elegant, refined Rosso. Silky, well-defined and focused, this Rosso is beautifully balanced by bright red fruits and vibrant acidity, keeping it fresh and inviting. It shows a lovely inner-sweetness along with a zesty quality which continues on through the juicy finish. (Best 2017-2024) - July, 2017
