Recioto is the ancestor of the Amarone and the most ancient wine of the Valpolicella Appellation. It is produced, like Amarone, through the grapes drying in the so-called “fruttaio”. Once the grapes have lost at least half of their weight, and with the evaporation of the water, the desired concentration of sugars is achieved, so that the vinification can take place. The fermentation is stopped to preserve this wine’s typical structure and sweetness. So, it is the only sweet wine produced in Valpolicella, but thanks to its good acidity it’s never cloying.

Moulin de la Gardette ‘Tradition’ 2019

Rhône Blend | Gigondas, France

Jean-Baptiste Meunier's Gigondas wines, from the land where Grenache is King, have an intensity and flavour that are distinctly their own. Moulin de la Gardette sits firmly in Gigondas' 1st Division. Seriously good. So pure, precise and energetic. Incredible tannins, fine silky mouth coating, the shape so poised and long. Again the counterplay of red energy with darkness. More baked rhubarb, delicacy in the baking spice, harmony here. A little woody herb. These are wines of presence. Oh so so

Lower elevation builds more generosity into Porcaria. Such wonderful texture! Made from Nerello Mascelese, some call it the Barolo of the South, others a cross between Pinot & Nebbiolo. I prefer to say it is itself & delicious. The vineyards of Etna have undergone a major renaissance in the last couple of decades. Passipisciaro has been one of the wineries at the forefront. I was blown away the first time I tasted this wine. NOTE: The two reviews below were made almost 12 months apart

Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo 2021

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Italy

A great way to get your eye in on the 2021 vintage! Vibrant with loads of energy & zippy fresh acid, slatey & mineral, dark, with tobacco at play. Perfumed, fine. Roses and red fruits, a little resinous note, fine long & plenty of fun. Dusting/chalky tannins making for a good complex with the acid. Again we see the low pH offering freshness.  The site near Monforte d’Alba  adds altitude freshness, Alba fruit (power), Serralunga freshness and elegance. This spends 15month large

Domaine Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin La Princée 2019

Chardonnay | Saint-Aubin, Burgundy

La Princée is a blend of 10 small village parcels from across just under three hectares. One-third of these vines are now over 60 years old, and the remainder were planted in 1985 and 2000. All the parcels are in the cooler, east-facing Saint-Aubin combe (valley), on chalky/mineral soils. It is therefore no surprise that this is a racy white Burgundy with great energy and a limestone-rich personality. “Aromas of pear, freshly baked bread, lemon oil and bread dough introduce Lamy's 2
