Millerandage

At the end of the video there is a fascinating tasting of Olivier Leflaives village whites from Chassagne, Mersault, and, Puligny exploring the differences between the three.

Millerandage or Chicken and Hen refers to differences in the size of berries in a bunch, with some normal sized berried and others very small. The smaller berries tend to have high levels of acid increasing the acidity of the end wine. Millerandage is more prominent in some varieties and clones than others. It is often caused by poor weather condition, cold and rain, during flower reducing the effectiveness of flower fertilisation. The number of seed in a berry impacts the amount of natural growth hormones that or produced in the individual berries, the fewer the seeds the less growth hormone and the small the berry.

Feeling Thirsty?

Vincent Dauvissat Chablis 2014

Chardonnay | France, Burgundy

A classic Chablis nose of seashore, iodine, cool apple and an array of citrus nuances leads to delicious, intense and chiseled middle weight flavors that display excellent depth and persistence on the balanced and refreshingly dry finale. For my taste this excellent effort is still improving and a wine that offers premier cru quality. In a word, impressive. June 2021 Drink 2024+ Allen Meadows, Burghound
White Cap - Dry "The lime-green-golden 2019 Bernkasteler Lay Auslese ** (White Capsule) is deep, intense and concentrated yet elegant and still precise and flinty on the nose. The attack on the palate is stunningly young and vital before the elegant and crystalline wine reveals its complexity and inner power. This is a tightly structured, very digestible and still edgy Auslese that needs another 5-6 years or so to settle and shine. This 2019 is enormously salty on the finish and highly promising

'Pungent notes of petrol and resin add breadth to the very ripe aromas of both yellow and white orchard fruit citrus and floral-suffused nose that is also trimmed in just enough wood to merit mentioning. There is impressive volume to the muscular, powerful and tension-filled middle weight plus flavors that possess a highly textured, even mildly creamy, mouthfeel where the citrus-tinged acid spine maintains the balance.' A super-filigree Mosel Auslese that impresses with fabulous delicacy and precision. So much vanilla-bean character, but also tropical-flower aromas. Beautifully integrated grape sweetness at the long, very refined finish.  Stuart Piggot, Suckling Also available in 375ml and Magnum!
