Vajra Langhe DOC Nebbiolo Claré J.C. 2022

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Claré J.C. is a Nebbiolo made according to a 1606 note from the House of Savoia jeweler Gian Battista Croce. This wine is a time-capsule into an era when Nebbiolo wines tasted fresher, lifted and slightly crisp. This is a wine for people who are young, brave at heart and curious about Piemonte forgotten past.  Giuseppe Vaira The name, Claré J.C., pays homage to Thomas Jefferson – who visited Piemonte in 1787 and described Nebbiolo “dry as a claret, sweet and lingering as Madeira, brisk

Superb! Bravi Francesco!🍷
The 'Side Project' of ex-Bruno Giacosa's winemaker Francesco Versio this is a stunner! Given Francesco used to make wine at Bruno Giacosa it is hardly surprising that he knocks out a solid Dolcetto. Giacosa being known as arguably the best maker of the variety. Co-incidentally the last Dolcetto I had, a few days before this, was a Bruno Giacosa made by Francesco, and, it was one of the best Dolcetto I've had the pleasure of devouring. The Dogliani DOCG covers some broad territory. Often of mu

Vietti Barbera d’Asti Tre Vigne 2020

Barbera | Piedmont, Asti

Vietti's Barbera d'Asti has an excellent élévage. I first had this wine back in 1994 while studying winemaking in Adelaide. Over the decades it has become more refined. A great expression of Barbera. Those in the know will tell you that good vineyards planted to Barbera in Asti will beat the bounty of average sites that have been planted to the variety in Alba. Vietti's Barbera d'Asti has an excellent élévage. The plush, generous fruit of Barbera is matched with juicy acid that sits in a

"Opening in the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums, spices and smoke, the 2021 Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Melanie is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with a sweet core of fruit, tangy acids, powdery tannins and penetrating finish. It's one example of a 2021 that I prefer to its riper, more powerful 2020 counterpart." William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 92 Points

Roches Neuves Samur-Champigny 2021

Cabernet Franc | Saumur-Champigny, D'Anjou-Saumur

Beautiful, plump yet linear fruit average 25 up to 70 years. Wild and tank only ferment. Bright lovely balance and flow. Great way to start the range. A little spice woody herb a little violets and blue fruits. A herbal note in a refreshing & very nice way. Moderate weight and length. Restrained crunchy and delicious. As per Gibb's note could easily be drunk with a couple of degrees knocked off it. “The 2021 Domaine des Roches Neuves is made in a light bodied, delicate and fragrant

Vanguardist ‘MVG’ Grenache 2020

Grenache | McLaren Vale, Australia

Another superb wine taking Aussie Grenache to a whole new level! Excellent texture, lovely fine, plush, front mid-palate tannin. Spiced, cinnamon, cardamon, beautifully layering in earthy and savoury secondaries. Like all his wines this has an exceptional core of juicy fruit. So much fun to be had. Hints of pepper and violets wrap around it. Beautiful oak handling and exceptional élévage.

"One cuvée that really doesn't miss a beat in this more challenging vintage is the 2021 Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes Sable, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine evocative of plums, sweet berries, spices and forest floor. Layered and concentrated, with an enveloping core of fruit and melting tannins, it will delight readers nostalgic for more classically proportioned Beaujolais." This wine used to come to us simply as Morgon Vieilles Vignes, without the name of the vineyard or lieu-dit. It comes from a single hectare of 93-year-old vines located on the Morgon-Chiroubles border, at the end of the Corcelette valley in a terroir historically known as Delys. Bouland’s vines were planted in 1926 on a southeast-facing slope at 10,000 vines per hectare. "The 2021 Morgon Les Delys Vignes plantées en 1926 is deep and brooding, unwinding in the glass with aromas of wild

Giovanni Rosso Langhe Nebbiolo 2021

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

Near a decaded ago Giovanni Rosso's Langhe Nebbiolo was the very first wine I tried from the estate. It enchanted then just as the 2021 impresses now! It has the hallmarks of all of Rosso's Nebbiolos: energy, balance, harmony, a caressing texture, restraint & purity. The winemaking here is considered and clever. The tannins are perfectly matched to the mid-weight core of fruit. Showing a level of complexity well beyond its classification flowers, earthiness red and darker fruits with a li

Daniel Bouland Morgon Délys 2022

Gamay Noir | Morgon, Beaujolais

Super refined and long with the finish offering all kinds of florals and exotic spice! I haven't had a chance to taste these and reviews aren't out yet. Given the consistency and the comments on the vintage below from Bouland and Morris they're just a no brainer. One of the wineries I buy from each year without hesitation. Expect them to have an extra degree of sophistication compared with other recent releases. Wine specific importer notes below. Even Bouland himself struggled to find

Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo 2019

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Italy

A great way to get your eye in on the 2019 vintage! Looks good lovely acid. Fine perfume slatey tannins. Fresh vital sour cherry fruit. A little fresh orange citrus, earthy macerative characters. Excellent thirst quenching nebbiolo. 10-12 days maceration + 15month post Malo. Best one I’ve seen from Massolino. So pretty.

Stéphane Ogier ‘La Rosine’ Syrah 2019

Shiraz/Syrah | Rhône Valley, Collines Rhodaniennes

Stéphane makes wines of great energy and vibrancy, always on the fresher end of the spectrum. Here there is both power and finesse. La Rosine comes from a single plot just outside the southern boundary of the famous Côte-Rôtie appellation. The 2019 is much more together than the 2018 at the same stage.  Still a little puppy fat. This is generous out of the gate. The tannins silky and long match the fruit nicely. Decant in youth to get the most from this. A divine array of fruits, spices a

Praeter Langhe Nebbiolo 2018

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

La Morra Fruit from the Vineyards of Luigi Oddero! Declassified Barolo! Not for quality, but, for the shorter ageing timeframe. BOOM! We're seeing more and more whole bunch wine coming out of Barolo. Matt whole bunch skills with Pinot made for a confident hand playing with fruit from La Morra. End results are a beautiful wine, it's really quite delicate for a La Morra. The whole bunch has elicited a fine perfume over vibrant fruit, little hints of spice. The tannins have a little edge of grip, i
