Exploring the red wine world will take you from lighter more elegant wines to brash, bold wines.

There are infinite combinations of different colours, aromas, flavours, and, textures making for a lifelong pleasure fest for your senses.

A dozen varieties make up the majority of the red wines produced. Think Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and, Merlot.

Are travels to Italy, Spain, and, France have seen more Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, Nerello Mascelese, Grenache, Carignan, and, Tempranillo red wines being poured into our glasses.

The wine world is producing better wines than ever before. In regions where laws permit broad experimentation with growing and making red wines is resulting in rapid evolution and refinement of styles.

In countries like Australia, cooler climate reds are really making a name for themselves.

Gobally, there’s been a welcome shift away for cumbersome, overripe, high alcohol, oaky wines, to red wines made with more restraint and freshness.

Another superb wine taking Aussie Grenache to a whole new level! "Raspberry steeped in liqueur, plenty of perfume, lots of spice, almond paste. Medium-bodied, raspberry and subtle earthiness, firm pumice stone tannin, lots of crunch, hazelnut and crisp red berries, very bright and long. Some tea and tobacco savoury stuff. Yes, you can still buy Burgundy at a decent price! Thankfully Savigny-Les-Beaune has yet to scale the stratospheric price mountains of its neighbours and still offers excellent value. Javillier's, 100% destemmed, has fine plush tannins over beautifully perfumed red fruits, strawberries and cream with the faintest wiff of char from discretely balanced oak. Luigi Pira Barolo ‘Marenca’ 2017

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Italy

Classic south/south-west exposure. The only difference in the vinification process is the oak maturation. Luigi Pira Barolo ‘Margheria’ 2018

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

All south-facing and sitting at 340 metres, vinification is the same as the Barolo ‘Serralunga’. Intense and complex nose with notes of fruit and flowers and hints of leather and fresh hay, while on the palate it’s perfectly knit and very distinctive, red fruited in style with ironstone, choc-cherry, roses and some of the darker notes of cola and porcini, along with textural red plum-skin, grippy, black-tea tannins that underpin, but it’s still generous and very approachable now.

Barbera | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

The 2018 Barbera d'Alba Gabutti is fabulous. In some recent vintages, the Cappellano Barbera has been a pretty big wine, but in 2018 it is all finesse. The purity of the fruit is striking, but the aromatics and mid-weight structure - both of which lean towards Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo - are just captivating. Pavelot's Top wine rates as one of the few remaining bargains in Burgundy! The 2018 was delicious the 2019 will be in my gob next week! A perfumed, ripe and cool nose features notes of red currant, black raspberry, violet and a hint of sandalwood. The reds of Chassagne a little secret that's slowly making its way out of the bag. I had one of Alex's red the 1978 monopole Morgeot 'La Cardeuse' in September 2020. In a word stunning. Vajra Barolo ‘Coste di Rose’ 2017

Nebbiolo | Barolo (sub-region), Italy

The 2017 Barolo Coste di Rose is pretty, supple and inviting. Some of the tannins need to resolve, but this is a young Barolo after all. The Coste di Rose doesn't have the sensuality of the Albe or the pedigree of the Viole, but it nevertheless has so much to give. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint, crushed rocks and sage are some of the many notes that linger. Apparently I haven't been trying the right Cabernet based blends from Italy. I used to bag them. Now I'm finding so much pleasure with so many of them!
