Wendouree Malbec 2018

Malbec | South Australia, Australia

AP Birks Wendouree Cellars produce some of the very few wines I’ll buy without tasting! The wines are something special. A celebration of an incredible old vineyard with plantings from the late 1800s. Tony & Lita are custodians of something truly special! Central vineyard planted in 1898. The Malbec is the best I've ever had from Australia. Malbec is a fickle variety that is a case of feast or famine. When flowering is poor so little fruit is realised that you can barely make a wine

Ranges from 80-60% Shiraz and 20-40% Mataro from 1893 Central, 1919 Eastern, and 1920 Eastern bush vines. His Shiraz Mataro is delicious, more ethereal than the straight Shiraz, with some structure evident from the Mataro. There's a

Domaine Racine Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2019

Pinot Noir | Santa Rita Hills, America

The 2019 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills is an attractive, ethereal wine. Sweet dried cherry, mint, tobacco and sage are some of the aromas and flavors that open in the glass. I would give this a few years in bottle to soften. This is an especially savory style of Pinot with plenty of aromatic presence, and the fruit pushed into the background. The Sta. Rita Hills cuvée is a blend of fruit from Domaine de la Côte and La Encantada. Antonio Galloni, Vinous 90 Points

Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Rabajà 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

🍇RABAJÀ RABAJÀ RABAJÀ 🇮🇹 The 2019 Barbaresco Rabaja is a powerful, austere wine that is going to need a number of years to come around. I very much like the energy, but readers should not plan on opening a bottle any time soon, as the 2019 is seriously tannic and shut down at the moment. It’s a gorgeous Barbaresco that shows the more elegant hand that defines the approach today. Antonio Galloni, Vinous 94 Points The Rabajà sees a jump in sophistication depth and length.

This is the perfect example of the nuances of maturing wine. The desire to achieve development through élévage whilst retaining freshness and energy. To have a depth of flavour whilst quenching thirst. To achieve balance. To create a scent that ought not exist. The 2010 Tondonia Reserva achieves all of these. Tasting a wine should always be about what's in the glass not the numbers, the numbers are there to help those at the extreme end of wine love comprehend how a creature like this co

Giuseppe Cortese Langhe Nebbiolo MAGNUM 2021

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

A Langhe Nebb made from young vine Rabajà .. Yes it's true! Always a fun wine. Elegant and juicy fruited, with solid core of fruit wrapped in chewy tannins. It’s a playful Langhe. Typically perfumed with a savoury twang, a little orange. Loads of fun to be had here. Always better after an extra year in bottle & a good decant. Will reward 2-5 years patience. Even his Langhe Neb is young vine Rabajà!

Auguste Clape Côtes du Rhône 2021

Shiraz/Syrah | Rhône Valley, Cornas

Saturated violet. An expressive bouquet evokes black and blue fruits and smoky bacon, along with suggestions of olive and pipe tobacco. Appealingly sweet, smoke- and spice-accented blackberry and cherry liqueur flavors show fine delineation and are braced by a spine of juicy acidity. A smoky mineral nuance builds with air and carries through a long, youthfully gripping finish that echoes the olive and spice notes. Josh Raynolds, Vinous 90-91 Points The Côtes du Rhône, is Clape's 3rd

Vietti Castiglione Barolo 2017

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Show the class of the vineyards and the winemakers! The 2017 Barolo Castiglione is a wild, exotic wine. Super-ripe red cherry, kirsch, cinnamon, tobacco, new leather and rose petal all flesh out in this ample, voluptuous Barolo from Vietti. The 2017 is a wine of significant heft hidden behind a wall of tannin. Give it a few years to soften or open it well in advance. Time brings out striking translucence as well as finesse. Drink 2025-2037. Galloni Luca and Elana are consistently showing the

Higher elevation and shift in soil offer a more vertical and mineral style. Xarel-Lo’s gentle bitterness is a perfect balancing agent where acid may be more prominent in Champagne, a lacing of phenolics and elegant bitterness work beautifully in Recaredo’s Corpinnats. Again the oxidative bruised apple and Vino di Pasto cereal flavours come out to play with green leafy herbs. There’s loads of energy and tension as fragrant and perfumed notes come out to play. Notes of oak toast and menthol surround the moderately high-toned aromas of red and dark cherry, plum and warm earth. There is terrific intensity to the vibrant, intense and well-detailed medium weight flavors that also brim with minerality on the even more compact, austere and firmly constituted finale. The quality is excellent though I underscore that this is presently a block of stone and it would be largely pointless to open a bottle before at least 7 to 8 years have passed. Dinrk: 2034+ ♥

Well played my friends, well played! The 3rd 100% Verduno Barolo from Fratelli Alessandria and it’s a beauty. Take the Prinsiot, already excellent, add another couple of layers of development, greater depth of tannin & you’re through the first couple of chapters of this book. An entrancing perfume ... the roses, baking spices, savoury lines, over a foundation of fruit. Tannins flow long & fine, beautifully weighted against the complex, layered flavour profile & energising gracefu

Domaine Louis Boillot Gevrey-Chambertin 2017

There's a theme through Louis Boillot's wines of harmony, and, delicacy with intensity. The old iron fist in the velvet glove. Rocche showing the site with faded flowers, a build in tannins here over the Villero adds a significant structural element, the long even shape is present as in past years. Youthful tension and tannins will need time to relax. Wonderful nose of intensity with great depth, rich, brooding, it’s starting to offer quite a lot. Cappellano Barbera Gabutti 2015

Barbera | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

Another great Piemonte vine, another great aspect of the Gabutti vineyards. A classic Barbera, feminine in its generosity and masculine in its posture. It is characterised by a distinctive acidity which sustains softness and fruit, and delivers a vibrating tasting experience until the long finale. The wine gives the impression of partial incompleteness, of continuous change; like all the red wines with strong character it takes its time to unveil its potentiality, character, and pleasures.
