Swinney Farvie Mourvèdre 2022

Mourvèrdre | West Australia, Australia

Outstanding perfume, violets and chocolates layered into earthy, almost truffled grape skins and blue fruits with a lick of darker Asian spices. Intoxicating and pure it just draws you in. One of those wines you can just sit and smell for ages. Layered tannins of this quality are a thing of beauty. Their playful grip is at just that right level to enliven and cleanse the palate. A triumph! Mouvèdre is more often seen as a blending component offering a superb perfume of violets and flowers, s

Swinney Farvie Grenache 2022

Grenache | West Australia, Australia

Freshness, delicacy and transparency all the way. Perfumed and floral with fine tannins incorporating a layer of stalk tannin. Tea and fresh blood orange on a core of vibrant blue fruits, with a savoury element, a little quality reduction. An exceptional example of grape first Grenache. A tiny splash of just 4% Mourvèdre in the mix here. Halliday 96 points Jukes 19+ Jordam 98

The Ultimate Glass for the Neb-Head! Sensory was conceived in July, 2017, after a discussion between the Winery Conterno Giacomo and Zwiesel Kristallglas. Conterno wanted to create a wine glass that fully enhances the characteristics of great wines. In the designing stage they focused on a shape that involves all the senses; thus the name Sensory was born. The glass expresses sensuality to the eye; it is perfectly balanced in the hand as well as producing a clear and lasting sound. The large b

“Rich dense purple, the nose is a little more reticent than the Pommard, with darker fruit, ripe but balanced, and just a touch of liquorice. While quite backward at the moment, this should emerge very well.” Jasper Morris, 90-92 Points

Tasted in April 2024 in a mini-vertical of Roda 1, this is indeed a special vintage of 'The Blue Note'. Jazz aficionados with know of the music label and the legendary jazz club started in New York and now seeded across the globe. I'm certain the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Lionel Hampton, Oscar Peterson and the Modern Jazz Quartet who headlined the clubs shows in the early days would be well pleased to have their music aligned to this fine beverage! In this case, t

This is the largest and most famous Grand Cru; its fame based on its history as one of Chablis’ first vineyards. The appellation enjoys a southerly aspect with very white, dense and deep clay soil, resting on a limestone bed 80 cm below the ground, which brings to the wine those spicy notes so typical of this terroir. Note: from 4 separate parcels totaling 4.11 ha, 3 of which are all at the top of the slope. If Kimmeridgian could be distilled, it would likely smell exactly like the nos

"A lightly riper and somewhat spicier nose offers up notes of plum, black raspberry and a hint of forest floor. There is better verve and intensity to the plush but focused flavors that also flash a touch of backend austerity on the equally mineral suffused finale. This is sufficiently firm to reward 10+ years of cellaring but not so tightly wound that it couldn't be approached after only 5 or so years." Drink: 2029+ Outstanding ♥ Burghound

Known above all for the exceptional quality of the wines Giacosa has produced over the years, Valmaggiore still represents the peak of value in the current range. A wonderful vineyard site now popularised by a handful of producers including Giacosa, the Valmaggiore bottling displays a noticeable step up in nuance and structure to the ‘regular’ Nebbiolo d’Alba which comes from various sites in Roero. Nebbiolo’s typical red fruits and red rose are abundant in the Nebbiolo Valmaggiore, w

Marcarini Barolo ‘Brunate’ 2016

Nebbiolo | La Morra, Italy

'Tasted alongside the La Serra, which is always interesting. If you want to experience terroir, well, I reckon traditionally made Barolo and Barbaresco provide much better examples than Burgundy does, with their Pinot Noir toolkit of winemaking techniques obfuscating vineyards so often! Anyway, air-freight sample here, so likely arriving in the not too distant future, given the travails of international shipping at present, container shortages, and the like. I’ve been dipping into my 2010s of

Artuke ‘El Escolladero’ Rioja 2021

Red Blend | Spain, Alavesa

The flow, harmony, fine long fruit and acid entranced. An edgy grip works well in a cleansing way. Super juicy, fine, refreshing with so much energy, vibrant and long. This will settle into something delicious. Savoury, meaty play going on, building into some forest floor. Tightly wound with plenty more to come. This is well worth having a look at, a demonstration of the new Rioja! El Escolladero is a vineyard planted in 1950 in the village of Ábalos at 660 meters in altitude. As with mo

Weingut Nikolaihof Ried Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd 2019

Riesling | Niederösterreich, Austria

Nikolaihof’s Smaragd level the ripest of the classifications. Vom Stein: This site is a sub-site of the larger Silberbichel vineyard. Located south east of the village, this is just 5.25 Ha and is a slight incline, sloping east, on the easternmost border of the Silberbichel vineyard.  The soils are gneiss with mica inclusions; there is a layer of loess and topsoil here – 60-120cm before you start to hit primary rock. Nikolaihof is the only winery to bottle this site on it’s own, but i

Terroir al Límit L’Arbossar 2015

Cariñena | Priorat, Spain

Huber's cooler fresher version of his 1er Cru equivalent Cariñena or Carignan has a ridiculous perfume & teases your senses! The first time I had Dominik's wines I was blown away by the sophistication, harmony, elegance and texture of the wines. the wine of L'Arbossar was perhaps my favourite. Such beauty is rare. Dominik's background as a Chef, perhaps his German ancestory and definitely his drive to make great wine appears to have lead to the perfect balance between art and science. L'A
