Wow! A sensational Rocche. At this early stage in its life it sit with harmony, together. Expressive, a long even palate, stunning tannins that caress. The perfume is intoxicating, faded flowers of Castiglione Falletto. A superb core of fruit of exceptional length. Year in year out this is in the top 3 of Sordo 8 Barolo Crus. It looks like this year will be no different. Savoury, a little salty and earthy. This will be long lived. Beautifullly composed

Greater complexity than Ravera at this early stage in its life. Florals, earthy, truffled layers on red fruits with classic roses and woody herbs at play. Hints of baking spice, it feels a little more relaxed at this stage compared to the Ravera. Excellent tannins, fine, precise, long and even matching the fruit through the full length of the palate. Outstanding purity. A superb expression of Verduno.

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Ravera’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Juicy red fruits that heart shaped Ravera profile, the fruit start broader across the palate and tapering away. Supple refined tannins, long juicy acid with a pleasing tang. Again grape first, tight-knit and pure. The most overtly acid of the Crus, it has loads more to come as the acid resolves with time and secondary development sees this relax and build generosity and complexity. A wonderful Ravera

The reds of Chassagne a little secret that's slowly making its way out of the bag. I had one of Alex's red the 1978 monopole Morgeot 'La Cardeuse' in September 2020. In a word stunning. Ask Alex and he'll tell you the soil profile is very similar to Chambolle in that neck of the woods. Offering up notes of peonies, rose petals, red berries and spices, the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes is medium-bodied, satiny and perfumed, with lively acids and a saline finish. Oddero Barbaresco ‘Gallina’ 2016

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

After 3 days open this came into its own and really shone. The tannins have softened a little, harmonising with the fruit. The wine has resolved to reveal a balance, beauty and perfume that sat shy on first opening! Some serious quality here. Vibrant and energetic Slatey mineral chalky nature. Excellent mouth-coating tannins that are fine with great line and length. Juicy acid ramps up some juicy fruit. Excellent elevage.  The lasting note is fruit, red and fun. That little splash of perfume sp

Wendouree Cabernet Malbec 2017

Red Blend | South Australia, Australia

AP Birks Wendouree Cellars produce some of the very few wines I’ll buy without tasting! The wines are something special. A celebration of an incredible old vineyard with plantings from the late 1800s. Tony & Lita are custodians of something truly special! Around 30% Malbec and comes from 1975 Central, 1920 Eastern, and 1989 Western vineyards. The blend of Cabernet and Malbec is well known throughout the world. Along with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, they are two of the variet
The first release of the Sesto Canto since 2009 & it's Amazing! As you shift from the Superiore level to the 2013 Riservas, the maceration period drops from over 100 days to around 70 days. The intensity of fruit goes up a notch and the tannins sit prouder in the wine. The sophistication of the mouthfeel is impressive. As with the Superiore wines the complexity and harmony are there in abundance and lift to new levels. These wines really require time in the glass to reveal their best. Drinking a

Fèlsina ‘Fontalloro’ IGT 2017

Sangiovese | Castelnuovo Berardenga, Italy

Fontalloro is exquisite in 2017. It is also such a contrast to the Rancia, as the two wines could not possibly be more different. Fontalloro is bright and vibrant, with more sweet red Sangiovese character than the darker Rancia. It is also incredibly delicious now, even though it clearly has the energy to age for many years. The 2017 is one of the finest Fontalloros I can remember tasting. Antonio Galloni

Figli Luigi Oddero ‘Rombone’ Barbaresco 2019

Nebbiolo | Treiso, Barbaresco

Some sort of crazy wine magic is happening! Dec 2023: Over the last 12 months. This has resolved beautifully and is looking very good. Flow is exceptional. Long fine beautifully weighted and balanced against superb fine long tannins.  Barbaresco had a really clean run at picking before the rain. Beautiful classic blue fruit, laurel/bay and a divine perfume. From the crown of Rombone on the southwest side which is dramatically different to the north side. Simply put ... Intoxicating!

Te Mata Estate Coleraine 2021

Bordeaux Blend | New Zealand, Hawke's Bay

Perfumed Refined Goodness! A single vineyard wine until 1989, Coleraine is an blend of the finest wines produced from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest Havelock Hills vineyards, first planted in 1892. Always a cabernet sauvignon dominant wine, often with merlot and cabernet franc, Coleraine is refined and classical, demonstrating the immense potential for Bordeaux blends in Hawke’s Bay. In fact, it looks mroe Bordelais than most Aussie Cabernet. Very powerful in its youth, t

This wine is from the ripest Smaragd classification. Thought to be the oldest documented vineyard, the name “Im Weingebirge”, Wine Mountains, dates back to the 5th Century. The wines from this vineyard are known to have impressive depth and minerality. The soil is varied with loess on the higher terraces and deep topsoil over primary rock lower down the slope. The wine ages on its lees in old barrels, giving it a creamy texture. The 2013 Baumpresse version of this was insane! A

On a spectrum of boldest to most elegant, the Rheingau sits in the middle for me, making cracking dry Rizza with plenty of tension whilst have the balance to produce superb off-dry to sweet wines. "The 2019 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Auslese is precise and flinty on the nose that displays very fine raisin and honey aromas, spiced with notes of crushed slate. Charmingly round and elegant on the refined palate, this is a salty-piquant and stimulating Auslese with remarkable grip and finesse. A

This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction that largely dominates the fruit. Otherwise, there is excellent volume to the mouth coating, racy and delineated bigger-bodied flavors that possess a beguiling texture thanks to the firm, dry and youthfully austere finish. This is a bigger and more powerful wine compared to the Vaulorent, but it doesn't have the same sophisticated mouthfeel. A qualitative choice. ♥ Outstanding Burghound

Poderi Colla Barbaresco ‘Roncaglie’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Barbaresco, Italy

The Hit List from 2019 Barbaresco is Insane! Now this from one of Piedmont's God Fathers! The three Crus Roncaglie, Roncagliette and Roncaglini make superb wines. Colla's 2019 Roncaglie re-enforcing the reputation! Yes, it is still tight, yet straight out of the gate it is clear something special is going on. Put it this way, I just trippled my order! Stunning perfume, layered in savoury & slate notes over a core of red fruit with darkness at the edge. Mouthfeel is incredibly important wi

Pavelot's Top wine rates as one of the few remaining bargains in Burgundy! An extremely ripe yet again, still fresh nose offers up its aromas of mocha, poached plum and black cherry jam. The rich, round and quite supple medium-bodied flavors immediately firm up on the youthfully austere, palate coating and lightly mineral infused finale. This firmly structured effort is going to need at least some patience as it's presently quite tightly wound. Drink: 2036+ ♥ Outstanding Burghound Also

The perfect and some what more affordable introduction to the wines of Ornellaia. For a long time I was unconvinced wines made from French varieties made in Italy. One wine stands out as changing my mind, 1990 Ornellaia, thanks Lou! Beautifully balanced and poised it was poured at an open wine night where the only criterion was that it had to be bloody good! 54% Merlot 28% Cabernet Sauvignon 14% Cabernet France 4% Petit Verdot The 2019 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is delicate,
