The Bold!

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Perno’ 2016

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Excellent, immediately took me to the 2010 Riserva. Wonderful density. Every sniff sees another scent wafting out of the glass. Excellent, immediately took me to the 2010 Riserva. Wonderful density. Every sniff sees another scent wafting out of the glass. The tannins show the benefit of a long ripening season. Yes, they have structure, they are damn fine tannins of exceptional depth and length. Hints of tobacco, earth, savoury bits and such a long deep core of fruit. This will develop beautifull

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Parussi’ 2016

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Opulent with again a step up in structure. Broody on the palate, should develop beautifully. Earthy delicious and just so much pleasure to be had. Opulent with again a step up in structure. Broody on the palate, should develop beautifully. As David puts it, it’s chubby. Immediate generosity on the nose. So much aroma and flavour. Mid-palate fruit weight here is insane. Rich and chocolatey with savoury dark fruit, hints of that faded flowers and tobacco. Earthy delicious and just so much pleasu

The Super Stars!
Again a controlled, blockbuster, with layers of dried and fading flowers, tobacco, cranberry and cherry liqueur. Huge, almost sweet palate. Long, but tight and relatively unevolved still, of course. Will be superb again. Such a complete wine yet tightly coiled and the moment, everything in it’s place and place for everything. Incredible tannin profile this year. Such lovely ripe nutty tannins of serious depth. The core of fruit is exceptional and long. Mouth filling, I so want to see a bottle

The Playful!
Very recognisable again; the graphite and generous almost smoky black cherry/prune announces a Monvigliero. This is both expressive now, yet clearly very classy. Superb, the flint, the slate, the dark sour cherries, such length. Incredible wine. A hint of macerative, grape marc character, again energy, vibrancy. Nice florals. Tannins that almost remind me of a little whole bunch will resolve. Should be a fun evolution for this one. This has a wonderful personality. Very recognisable again; th

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Ravera’ 2016

Crunchy red fruits with the energy of 2016, there’s the overlying perfume and incredible length just goes for every. The sophistication of the front mid-palate tannin is there. The refreshing balanced acidity. Playful yet leveling up to serious. A lythe yet present flavour profile. Aha - this red cherry and brick-dust opening is be

A more restrained, more elegant and much more citrus-inflected nose grudgingly reveals its spice, floral and iodine suffused aromas. The racy, intense and markedly mineral-driven middle weight flavors possess excellent delineation while displaying plenty of oyster shell character on the dry and focused finale. Lovely. Burghound

Domaine Faiveley Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2019

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, France

I had Faiveley's 2015 Latricières Chambertin recently, delicious, perfumed elegant and refined. Along with the 2015, I devoured a brace of 2016's from across the appellations. They are really stepping up their game, the investments in the vineyard and winery are a testament to this. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis, rich spices and loamy soil, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with an ample core of lively, conce

Vanguardist ‘MVG’ Grenache MAGNUM 2021

Grenache | McLaren Vale, Australia

Another superb wine taking Aussie Grenache to a whole new level! "Raspberry steeped in liqueur, plenty of perfume, lots of spice, almond paste. Medium-bodied, raspberry and subtle earthiness, firm pumice stone tannin, lots of crunch, hazelnut and crisp red berries, very bright and long. Some tea and tobacco savoury stuff. Such an excellent wine. Structural but ripe. The quality of tannin is outstanding. Serve it in a big Burgundy glass! Drink 2024-2034." Gary Walsh TWF 97 Points

The Godfather of the Saar makes truly special wine deserving of the title. AP: 02 22. The 2021er Wiltinger braune Kupp Riesling Kabinett is a fruity-styled wine with a subtle nose of peach, citrusy fruits, herbs, and a hint of creaminess and apricot blossom. The wine proves incredibly playful and precise on the palate, where its creamy side is wrapped into beautiful acidic and fruity elements. The finish is simply stunningly pure, focused, and silky. A kick of acidity then provides the right

André Clouet Dream Vintage 2006

Chardonnay | Champagne

This 2006 Dream Vintage sits proud next to the divine 1911 & V6. "The original generosity of this vintage is reinforced by a clear structure that gives it freshness and precision. Fine, bright and elegant. Full, complex nose of grapefruit, peach and raspberry. Structured on the palate, with surprising acidity. A voluptuous Champagne that fills the palate." As always, Jean François Clouet has created a complete Champagne harnessing time to yield a beautifully developed bottle of fizz.

Yes, you can still buy Burgundy at a decent price! Thankfully Savigny-Les-Beaune has yet to scale the stratospheric price mountains of its neighbours and still offers excellent value. Javillier's, 100% destemmed, has fine plush tannins over beautifully perfumed red fruits, strawberries and cream with the faintest wiff of char from discretely balanced oak. Long with great persistence, excellent composure, and layers of complexing earth, mineral characters. Delicious rendition.

Luigi Pira Barolo ‘Marenca’ 2017

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Italy

Classic south/south-west exposure. The only difference in the vinification process is the oak maturation. Around 50% goes into large-format aged botti and the remainder in tonneaux, partially new (1 year in tonneaux and 1 year in large botti). ‘Marenca’ is only offered as a cru Barolo by Pira – the other owner, Angelo Gaja, use theirs (along with their ‘Margheria’) in Barolo ‘Sperss’. The nose is fresh, with complex aromas that range from wild berries to dark chocolate and dried he

Cappellano Barbera Gabutti 2016

Barbera | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

Another great Piemonte vine, another great aspect of the Gabutti vineyards. A classic Barbera, feminine in its generosity and masculine in its posture. It is characterised by a distinctive acidity which sustains softness and fruit, and delivers a vibrating tasting experience until the long finale. The wine gives the impression of partial incompleteness, of continuous change; like all the red wines with strong character it takes its time to unveil its potentiality, character, and pleasures. Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘Cuvée Prestige’ 2017

Rhône Blend | Châteauneuf du Pape, France

“Including more Syrah, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Prestige is 70% Grenache 20% Mourvèdre, and the rest Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties. While it’s brought up mostly in foudre, it has 10% in demi-muids and 30% in cuve tronconique. With thrilling purity of fruit, notes of black raspberries, blackberries, ground pepper, garrigue, and a distinct sense of minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe, sweet tannins, a beautifully opulent texture, and a great fini

A.J.Adam Dhroner Hofberg Auslese* Riesling 2019

Riesling | Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany

AP 18.20 The 2019er Hofberg Auslese *, as it is referred to on the consumer label, is a selection of botrytized grapes (40%) harvested at 116° Oechsle from the main hill of the vineyard, and was fermented to down noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a beautifully restrained yet finely aromatic and complex nose of minty herbs, spices, candied pineapple, smoke, lead pencil, pink grapefruit, a hint of apricot, and greengage. The wine proves superbly balanced on the sweet palate, whe
