In the context of fine wine today, this presents incredible value! After tasting the Erste Lager, I can't wait to see what the GG has to offer! Catoir's Haardter Riesling 2021 Bürgergarten "Im Breumel" GG VDP. Grosse Lage opens with a deep, clear and aromatic yet also elegant, pure, refined and complex bouquet of ripe and juicy fruits intermingled with iodine and even some flinty notes. Juicy, round and savory on the palate, with animating saline and grippy minerality, this is a dense, t

A Masterpiece!

Figli Luigi Oddero Barolo 2017

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

A blend of fruit from 30% La Morra’s Rive, 30% Castiglione Falletto’s Scarrone, & 40% Serralunga’s Baudana & Broglio. Aged in new 75-85HL Gamba botti for 26 months. "Rose, ripe berry, menthol and sunbaked earth aromas come to the forefront. On the full-bodied palate, enveloping, seasoned tannins accompany dried black cherry, star anise and tobacco. Drink 2024–2029." Kerin O'Keefe

Made with Passion!
Deceptively sophisticated, the depth of fruit is beautifully counterpointed with stunning mineral acid & layers of flavour! Larmandier-Bernier was one of the first grower Champagnes to make a mark in Australia. Everyone had been used to hyped up, over marketed crap from big houses. These guys sent a ripple through the market that became a shock wave of yumminess! 100% Chardonnay Longitude is the more elegant of the two in comparison with Latitude. The Longitude base 2018 is a raging success.

Fascinating comparison with the Pavelot Dominode 18. There’s a similarity with the fleshy generous fruit and shape to the fruit. The Tollot Beaut goes for a slightly softer mouthfeel with very silky tannins. Like many 2018’s rich mouth filling fruit is at play, a darkness underlying. I’m going to be fascinated to see the Leroux, Pavelot & Tollot-Beaut Savignys evolve over time. As this opens in the glass the air induces refinement and elegance. Delicious wine that in a blind tasting I'

Domaine Thibert Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Menetieres’ 2018

Chardonnay | Pouilly-Fuisse, France

To be labelled 1er Cru from the 2020 Vintage! “The 2018 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Ménétrières unwinds in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp yellow orchard fruit, lemon curd, freshly baked bread and anise. Full-bodied, layered and sensual, it's textural and enveloping, with a deep core of fruit, racy acids and a long, precise finish. Stupidly, this part of Les Ménétrières was denied the premier cru classification, so this is the antepenultimate vintage under this name. 2025 - 2040”

“Aromas of sweet berry fruit, warm spices, forest floor and raw cocoa preface the 2019 Beaune Les Epenottes, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and structured wine that's quite tightly wound, with fine concentration, lively acids and ripe tannins that assert themselves on the finish. This will require a bit of patience, but its track record for aging with grace is excellent.” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 90+ Points JM 90-92

A cooler and airier array is comprised by notes of citrus, quinine and essence of algae. The ultra-sleek and overtly mineral-driven flavors possess cuts-like-a-knife delineation before terminating in a chiseled, linear and moderately austere finale. This is a terrific example of Les Lys, indeed it’s textbook. 91-94 points, Drink: 2028+ Burghound The 2021 Chablis 1er Cru Les Lys is one of the range's highlights this year, offering up aromas of almonds, white flowers, green apple, cri

On the left bank of Le Serein and on the middle of the slope, Vaillons is a particularly well-positioned Premier Cru that enjoys an excellent reputation thanks to the work of several key growers. The domaine works with vines planted in 1974 in the lieux-dits of Les Epinottes (a cooler part of the vineyard) and Roncières (which provides more opulence). Then, a parcel of 75-year-old vines in Sécher usually accounts for 30% of the blend and provides intense mineral cut and structure. The wine wa

Moreau-Naudet Chablis 1er Cru ‘Forêts’ 2021

Chardonnay | France, Burgundy

Stéphane Moreau called Forêts “…one of the greatest terroirs of Chablis.” It’s a historical sub-plot within the 1er Cru Montmains, located high up the slope and facing southeast. It can certainly produce Chablis of the highest order, as both Dauvissat and Moreau have shown many times (Raveneau also has a small parcel). Moreau farms two plots of vines here, over a total of just under two hectares. The first is alongside the vineyard of Vincent Dauvissat, and the vines are the s

The Playful!

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Ravera’ 2015

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Ravera = generosity with crunchy fruit and playful front mid-palate tannin, that Sordo élévage, so much fun! ‘Ravishing red’ as usual, a wave of roses and red cherry. Quite lush, but holds its shape as all that red rolls to the pinpoint, tingling finish. It’s no wonder Ravera has risen so much in people’s estimation over recent years. Serious Barolo of a distinct style.

The Playful!
Opening with juby cherry fruit that resolved beautifully in the glass, a slight lift in the structural tannins compared with the Ravera, remaining plush & playful! The star cru of an otherwise workmanlike comune, this is exactly why Monvigliero is so widely appreciated. It has the range of generous Barolo things; cherry and strawberry notes now, probably in youthful mode, but with the usual cherry-skin, raisin and smoky elements just apparent. Overall such an ambassador for Barolo, just this sid

The Super Stars!
Brooding and dark, bold structure, while still being supple. There's a trick! Tightly coiled it progressively opened. This will be a special wine in time. So much going on! Fabulous, both in itself and as a contrast to Villero. Where Villero is delicate and persistent, all finesse, Rocche is much more forceful with a similar range of characters. Everything is darker, deeper and more. The glory of this pre-eminent cru is the combo of style and power; how such waves and complexities stay in such l

The Bold!

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Parussi’ 2015

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Showing tannins of Castiglione Falletto, even and long. Darker and brooding. This is going to a cracker in time. Was immense after a day in the glass! This is the darkest of the 4 Castiglione cru, with its dark red fruits of cherry and cranberry. It usually shows more immediate plummy ripeness and overt generosity, but this time it’s more tightly wound. Plenty of texture and flavour, but needs time. A beauty.

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Perno’ 2015

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Took the second longest to reveal more of itself. Like the other wines in the bracket it demands time in the bottle. Perfume combined with secondary complexity the name of the game here! This is all Monforte, with giveaway blue fruits, violet, cherry liqueur and some mint. Firm, taut and fleshy, this is typical of this part of Perno, the Cerretta parcel, immediately adjoining Conterno-Fantino’s, with which it shares a similar darker ‘blue’ style. Tannins seem very ripe this year…but they

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Gabutti’ 2015

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

Tightly coiled & brooding. Chewy old school tannins like the Perno. This will build into a fascinating wine as it resolves. If the 2008 Gabutti Riserva I had is anything to go by this will be a cracker given 5+ years in bottle! No chance to mistake this, with its abundance of darker things; stock, porcini, graphite, smoke and black cherry. Under this very typical Serralunga ‘tarry/earthy’ mantle though, are other complexities of dried roses, orange and spices. The firm and enlivening structu
