This! The 2013 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè brings together so many of the elements that make the Roagna wines so compelling today. In the past, Crichët Pajè was a huge, tannic wine. The 2013, on the other hand, is incredibly finessed. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, blood orange, cedar, kirsch and cinnamon are some of the many notes that grace the 2013. Sensual and silky, the 2013 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. There's real depth and substance here. What a wine. Drink 2025-2043 Antonio Gallo

Roagna Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti 2015

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

The 2015 Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti lifts from the glass with striking aromatics. Then again, that's Asili. Sweet red berry fruit, mint, blood orange, cinnamon and star anise form a gorgeous latticework of aromas and flavors. The 2015 is gracious, light on its feet and full of Asili seduction, but with that extra kick if tannic bite that is such a Roagna signature. It will be even better once those tannins soften a bit further. Galloni

Roagna Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti MAGNUM 2016

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

The 2016 Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti is sensual, gracious and light on its feet. The purity of the fruit is simply dazzling, while tannins are all Asili, which means a bit softer than in the other wines. In the glass, the Asili is beautifully perfumed and ethereal, yet also quite deep, in the way only Nebbiolo can be. Crushed red berry fruit, kirsch, orange peel, cedar and cinnamon all linger. Roagna Barolo Pira Riserva 2006

Nebbiolo | Castiglione Falletto, Italy

The 2006 Barolo Pira Riserva Black Label is a tiny selection of about 2,400 bottles that spent five years in cask and then a decade in cement. Dense, exotic and beautifully layered, the Riserva captures that sense of timelessness that is often a signature of the Roagna wines - a place in time in which wines are both aged and young at the same time. It's that co-existence in two different worlds that defines many of the best wines here. Spice, orange zest, chocolate, spice, star anise and sweet

Roagna Barbaresco Gallina 2016

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

The flowers, roses, are showing, the red fruits shining, exceptional harmony, the wine has freshened beautifully in the glass over the course of 15 hours. The earthy and savoury notes fallen into the background. Wonderfully fine, long, slatey tanin, so even, the hallmark of extend maceration grace your tongue making for an entrancing dance with devine acid. Tranparent, and, elegant, the fruit weight here is deceptive, much more depth and length than might initially be percieved. Graceful Gallina

Roagna Barbaresco Pajè 2016

The 2016 Barbaresco Pajè is one of the highlights in this range, as it offers gorgeous mid-palate depth with super-classic structure. Dark cherry, tobacco, licorice, leather and deeply-pitched spice accents infuse the 2016 with captivating nuance. The Pajè represents a bridge to the higher-end wines in this range. All of these wines have become pricey, but the Pajè is one of the larger-production wines and consistently delivers superb quality at a more approachable price than many of the othe

Roagna Barolo Pira 2016

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

On openning the Pira was all beefstock, savoury with a hint of reduction. Revisited with 15 hours in the glass. There you have it DJ Luca has been at it again. The fruit has come to the fore. The faded flowers so common with great wines from Castiglione Falleto are shining along with red fruit, orange and a hint of baking spice. The 2016 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti is a big, statuesque wine. Of all the 2016 Barbarescos, the Montefico seems to be the wine that is still recovering most from its bottling, about two months before this tasting. The vertical structure of Montefico is evident, as are the intense tannins. Deeply savory and mineral, the Montefico is a wine for readers who can afford to wait for it. Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Roagna Barbaresco Albesani 2016

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

More power, darker fruit more prominent with a little baking spice, and a clear build in structure by comparison with the Gallina. Again the time on skins and in wood has developed and harmonised this beautifully. It’s woven in so many complexing characters, that as with all delicious wines are hard to pull apart, nor should you try. 15 hours in the glass and the core of fruit is shining through. 'The 2019 Timorasso Derthona Montemarzino is bright, transparent and super-expressive. Luca Roagna's Timorasso is one of the most refined versions. Roagna Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti 2015

Nebbiolo | Barbaresco, Italy

The 2015 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti is a great example of this site. Iron, smoke, crushed rocks, sage, mint and licorice bring out the wilder, savory side of this Barbaresco vineyard. Firm and muscular in the glass, with striking depth, the 2015 has so much to offer. It does need at least a few years in bottle to be at its best. Galloni

The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà hits the palate with a blast of dark cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice, smoke and spice. Somber and imposing, the Rabajà shows plenty of its typical breadth and body, but, not surprisingly, it is also closed and in need of time. There is good energy here, if not quite the visceral thrill of the very best years. Galloni

The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is one of the most intriguing wines in this range. My impression is that the 2015 still has quite a bit to say, but this is Montefico, where the wines are slow to reveal themselves. White pepper, dried herbs, dried red cherry and mint add a super-appealing upper register. This is such a compelling Barbaresco. Galloni

Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva ‘Ovello’ 2015

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

One of the stand outs in this range, the 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello shows the energy and tension that are so typical of this site, but with a slightly riper profile than is the norm. Then again, we are talking about 2015. Although perhaps not the most classic expression of Ovello, the Produttori's 2015 is very nicely done. Best of all, it will drink well with just a few more years in bottle. This is an especially heady, exotic Ovello Barbaresco that needs to shed some baby fat, its considera

Superb! Bravi Francesco!🍷
The 'Side Project' of ex-Bruno Giacosa's winemaker Francesco Versio this is a stunner! Given Francesco used to make wine at Bruno Giacosa it is hardly surprising that he knocks out a solid Dolcetto. The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is a serious, somber wine. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice and menthol show off the darker side of Nebbiolo to great effect. In most vintages, Rio Sordo is an easygoing wine, but not in 2016. Readers will find a potent, brooding yet mid-weight Barbaresco that screams with character. What a way to start this tasting! Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva ‘Pora’ 2016

The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is a brooding wine, its mid-weight structure notwithstanding. Iron, smoke, tobacco, cedar and dried flowers add a feral, earthy quality that is so appealing. Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva ‘Asili’ 2017

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is distinguished by its extremely linear and direct approach with wild rose, cassis and lots of mineral or crushed stone. The wine is taut and fresh on the palate with a medium-lean texture and lots of depth and persistence. I love those bright rose petal-like nuances on the close of this wine, and the tannins are firm and silky. This bottle boasts a unique identity in this group of Riservas. Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva ‘Pora’ 2017

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora (with 13,333 bottles released) is usually the first wine I taste each year when I review this set of Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco. That's because it usually appears as the most delicate, and the intensity of each successive bottle increases after this one. But these schematics are a bit more difficult to align in a hot and dry vintage such as this that produced richer and more succulent fruit across the board. The Pora is redolent of red and purple fru

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota plays some of its best cards in terms of texture, offering silky tannins, firmness and a long-lasting veil of fruit flavors. Like the other Riservas in this group of new releases, the wine is fermented in steel and aged in large oak casks for 32 months. Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva ‘Ovello’ 2017

One of the bigger productions (with 17,744 bottles) in the Produttori del Barbaresco's portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power (and 15% alcohol) to carry it through the aging process. Monica Larner, The
