Hubert Lignier 2014 Burgundy Offer

Hubert Lignier has been a favourite of mine since I first tasted the Domain’s wines 20 years ago.

2014 has been an excellent year all round. With 2015 following it, we’ve seen a pair of strong vintages. Time will tell which ends up taking the top spot. When you’re looking at wines from the great producers, like Hubert Lignier, either year, will undoubtedly make you happy when the cork gets popped!

About Hubert Lignier

In recent vintages the ever-congenial Hubert and his son Laurent have furnished each vintage with exemplary, occasionally heavenly wines that rank amongst the finest in Burgundy. If God made wine for a reason, then it was for wines like these. These are very special wines, some of the best you will find in Burgundy.
Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate

Two of the aspects that I like best about the 2014s is their transparency to the underlying terroir coupled with their sheer drinkability. This transparency is enhanced by terrific vibrancy because the wines really do taste alive in the mouth as they’ve got energy, or what I like to call underlying tension. They’re ripe yet they are what the French call digest, or refreshing, where the first sip invites the next which is in fact what makes them so drinkable. Wine quality is not only generally consistent in 2014 but it’s good everywhere in the Côte de Nuits as well as up and down the appellation hierarchy.

About the Wines

Thoughts from Burghound

Morey-Saint-Denis 2014 – $130.00/bottle

(HL) Vines planted in the 1970s and 1980s. Produced partially from the domaine’s grapes (Chenevery) and partially from purchased grapes (Chenevery, Crais Gillon, Chorvées Gillon). The soils are deeper and composed of clay. They create complete, well-structured wines, which are smooth on the palate. The aromas often include notes of violets and blackcurrants.

– Hubert & Laurent Lignier

Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées 2014 – $130.00/bottle

Vines planted between 1938 and 1966, covering an area of 1.02 hectares, this terroir located below the Mazoyères Grand Crus gives us meaty, subtle wines.
– Hubert & Laurent Lignier

This is also quite firmly reduced and impossible to assess. Once again there is a lovely sense of verve to the more muscular and solidly concentrated flavors that are powerful, focused and unapologetically rustic on the serious finish. This excellent effort is almost old school in style and will definitely require patience. Score: 89-91 Drink: 2022+ Outstanding

Gevrey-Chambertin ‘La Justice’ 2014 – $140.00/bottle

(HL) Vines planted in 1987… grapes from this vineyard, planted over a gravel pit with good draining soil… When the summer is hot and dry, the vine suffers from lack of water supply. The wines are characterised by their elegance, delicacy and the softness of their tannins.
– Hubert & Laurent Lignier

An exceptionally fresh, cool and relatively elegant nose speaks of dark currant, earth, tea and a hint of spice. The flavor profile is classic La Justice with its sleek and focused palate impression that continues onto the lightly mineral-driven flavors that display just a hint of youthful austerity on the attractively long and well-balanced finish. Good stuff that should also be accessible young. Score: 88-91 Drink: 2021
– Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue: 61 tasted: Jan 15, 2016

Chambolle-Musigny ‘Vieilles Vignes’ 2014 – $160.00/bottle

(HL) Vines over 50 years of age… from 2 parcels: Gamaires and Drazey… producing 5 barrels (228 l) per year on average. Growing on silty clay soils, this Chambolle is finer than ‘Les Bussières’, very aromatic and can be appreciated from its youth.
– Hubert & Laurent Lignier

Morey-Saint-Denis ‘Les Chaffots’ 1er Cru 2014 – $235.00/bottle

…From vines planted in 1968. Located just above the Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, at 330 metres altitude, on a hillside with an east-southeast incline. The vineyards receive an exceptional amount of sunlight as well as freshness due to the altitude and the nearby valley.
– Hubert & Laurent Lignier

A brooding and backward nose once again only grudgingly gives up notes of essence of black cherry, spice, earth and gamy aromas. There is superb richness and almost painful intensity to the overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a very firmly structured and impressively long finish. This is much less rustic than it usually is and should easily see its 20th birthday if you enjoy older burgundies as Chaffots almost always ages wonderfully well. Score: 91-93 Drink: 2026+

Gevrey-Chambertin ‘Aux Combottes’ 1er Cru 2014 – $320.00/bottle *LIMIT ONE BOTTLE

…Vines planted in 1957. This 3-hectare terroir is surrounded by 3 Grands Crus: Latricières Chambertin to the north, Charmes-Chambertin to the east and Clos de la Roche on its southern and western sides. The soil, lying on a gentle slope, is composed of sand, clay and silt.
– Hubert & Laurent Lignier

This is perhaps the most elegant wine in the Lignier range with its cool, restrained and pure nose of red and dark pinot fruit, floral and hints of forest floor that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is a wonderful sense of underlying tension and plenty of punch to the mineral-driven, equally pure and refined medium weight flavors where the refinement is enhanced by the fine grain of the supporting tannins on the ever-so-mildly austere finale. This is really a lovely effort and textbook Combottes with its finesse and cool minerality. Score: 91-94 Drink: 2026+ Sweet spot Outstanding
– Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue: 61 tasted: Jan 15, 2016

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 – $415.00/bottle *LIMIT ONE BOTTLE

…In the Mazoyères Haut vineyard area, planted in 1948. Soil deeper than in Clos de la Roche and composed of clay-limestone and sand. The vineyards are located next to Les Combottes, to the south of Charmes-Chambertin.
– Hubert & Laurent Lignier

A more restrained and more deeply pitched nose also has some wood in evidence on the combination of earthy dark berry fruit and sauvage hints. There is real size, weight and power to the bigger broad-shouldered flavors that brim with palate coating dry extract, all wrapped in a dense, long and well-balanced finish. This doesn’t have the refinement of the Griotte but it’s definitely more powerful and more concentrated. Score: 92-94 Drink: 2026+
– Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue: 61 tasted: Jan 15, 2016

Clos De La Roche Grand Cru 2014 – $470.00/bottle  *LIMIT ONE BOTTLE

…Over two parcels: Monts Luisants: …planted between 1955 and 1965 on hillsides with a 25% gradient… Fremières… planted between 1953 and 1960. Thin soil composed of white limestone, clay and marl over compact rock known as “dalle nacrée” (pearly flagstone) from the Middle Jurassic.
– Hubert & Laurent Lignier

An exceptionally fresh and cool if distinctly restrained nose offers up notes of pomegranate and black berry fruit scents that are liberally laced with wisps of sauvage, earth, tea and leather. There is excellent verve and fine detail to the impressively intense and imposingly scaled flavors that are supported by markedly firm tannins on the suave, mouth coating and massively long finish. This very structured effort reminds me of some of the great old vintages made by Hubert in the late 1980s and early 1990s. (93-95) Score: 93-95 Drink: 2029+ Don’t miss!
