Sottimano Barbaresco ‘Pajorè’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Treiso, Italy

From one of the famed Cru's of the Commune of Treiso, Barbaresco. A classic, superb fruit of depth and considerable length here, backed by long tannins of excellent mouthfeel. Loads going on with darker fruits and an array of complexing earthy, savoury notes, spices and blood orange adding layer after layers of subtle complexity. Plenty in the tank here too. Classic Barbaresco. Wait 5 years before trying.

“The 2019 Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes is attractive, bursting with aromas of cherries, sweet berry fruit, rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and lively, it's deep and layered, framed by powdery tannins and bright acids. This has turned out well.” William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

One of Terre Nere's 3 Grand Cru's, the Pre-phylloxera vineyard sits within this one! It's a bold, delicious interpretation of Nerello. One of Terre Nere's 3 Grand Cru's, the Pre-phylloxera vineyard sits within this one! It's a bolder, delicious interpretation of Nerello Mascalese. When these landed I had to rip the lid off a 2021 Calderara Sottana & hook in! It's been a while since I've had a Contrade from Terre Nere. Straight out of the gate this is divine, a complete wine. The Perfect Follow-Up to Colla's 2016 Rocaglie! “The 2016 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose is a wine of total finesse. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint and spice give the 2016 captivating inner perfume to match its translucent, mid-weight personality. Pliant, exquisitely layered and so incredibly inviting, the 2016 is going to be tempting early. It is a fabulous wine in every way.” Antonio Galloni

This too is quite ripe (though not roasted) with its nose of plum, cassis and a similar note of mocha. Once again there is a lovely sense of verve to the sappy and rich medium-bodied flavors that possess a slightly finer texture while delivering excellent length on the balanced and somewhat firmer finale. Lovely. Allen Meadows, Burghound 90-93 Points ♥ Outstanding

This Climat is almost an extension of the slopes where the Grands Crus grow, with only a small path separating them. Sitting directly alongside Les Preuses, the proximity to its illustrious neighbours results in powerful, mineral wines. This could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its equally cool, elegant and airy aromas of white-fleshed fruit, floral, iodine and subtle passion fruit-scanted nose. The super-sleek, refined and energetic medium weight flavors possess both ample mineral

Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘Cuvée Prestige’ 2019

Rhône Blend | Châteauneuf du Pape, France

“One of the top vintages for this cuvée, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Prestige features intense aromas of black cherries and purple raspberries, without the dark chocolate nuances that appear in the other 2019s at this address. It's full-bodied, dense and concentrated, big but also silky and fine, with a long, elegant finish. It's a Grenache-led assemblage of lots from the lieux-dits of les Brusquières and Cabrières. Technical director Didier Negron is refreshingly candid when speaking abou

Mas Doix ‘Salanques’ Garnatxa 2019

Garnatxa | Spain, Catalunya

Another Priorat with restraint, this is a very good example of subtle oak handling and how it can add to a wine by just playing around the edges. Energy and depth of fruit with mineral acid and a slatey mouthfeel. Very fine long, savoury and dark with great length. Baking spices, red fruit pops, incredibly even and long.

Àlvaro Palacios ‘Gratallops’ 2019

Excellent. So fine and long, great persistence, harmony and intrigue. Poise, balance, complexity and personality. Bright fruits with mineral acid. Slatey, earthy, savour with some darker fruits. Inredible vitality, such sublte energetic fruit. Paul Kaan Initially quite a mineral nose with a blend of earth and gun smoke, this gives way to concentrated layers of red and black cherry, blueberry yoghurt and liquorice spice. The palate is bright and full-bodied, with firm savoury tannins an

Wow! Initially a little spritz that swirled of quickly, the protective nature of dissolved CO2 goes some way to explaining why this wine looks younger than the “2020 Retour a Terre”.  Bottling with a little CO2 is a sign that they see this as a wine for the longer haul. It is obsolete to repeat many of Kelley’s remarks. It’s clear that the fruit is exceptional, the mid-palate weight, always a sign of quality Chardonnay, is impressive, along with the flow, shape and texture. Incred

Figli Luigi Oddero Barolo 2013

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

Luigi Oddero's 2013 Vigna Rionda is amongst the best Barolos I've devoured playing right at the Burgundian end of the Barolo spectrum. Having drunk 2004, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 Barolos and Nebbiolos from the estate there's a consistency and excellence through the wines and the years. Maker! Maker! Maker! Dante Scaglione, still consulting to Bruno Giacosa, was in charge of making in 2013, joined shortly after by Francesco Versio. Both have incredible touch and the abi

Zárate Albariño ‘El Palomar’ 2021

Albariño | Val do Salnés, Galicia

170 year old pre-phylloxera vines. Skin contact and oxidative handling are beautifully balanced. Savoury and earthy with that Albariño fresh green herb hit. Fascinating to watch it freshen in the glass, bruised apple falls away & the fruit shines. A fine phenolic grip & spice from the skin contact add intrigue. Opens beautifully on both nose and palate over several hours, intensity builds & it flows gracefully. Keeps getting fresher, and fresher. A clear sign of quality f

Zárate Albariño ‘Balado’ 2021

Albariño | Val do Salnés, Galicia

Moving up to the top end of Zárate’s Albariño The Balado shows a build in depth, richness and complexity. A clever élévage shows a nice little bit of oxidative development that has been tamed to be super fresh. The textural elements ramp up to match the depth and a perceived lower acidity (still loads there). Crisp, flowing, chalky, saline minerality. White flowers on insane lemons, a little hazelnut & very subtle mapple hit with discrete soft green herbs. Perfect for t

A slightly riper, and more deeply pitched, nose features a mix of both red and dark currant and more prominent earth wisps. There is again good vibrancy to the slightly more voluminous flavors that are at once punchy but succulent, all wrapped in a sour cherry-inflected finale that offers just a bit more depth and persistence. From all accounts this is something special. Given the calibre of the rest of the wines in the line up I don't doubt it for a second! “The saturated purple-hued 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De La Reine Des Bois is another brilliant wine from this estate. Made from 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and 5% Syrah and Vaccarèse (as well as a few other varieties) brought up in 80% stainless steel and 20% old barrels, it offers an extraordinary bouquet of blackcurrants, chocolaty herbs, ground pepp

Vanguardist ‘Rende’ Grenache 2018

Grenache | McLaren Vale, Australia

Smash this Grenache! Vanguardist continues to raise the bar for Aussie Grenache Hopefully, I'll get a glass of this in my gob soon. Based on Michael's clear skills it's hard to see it being anything but delicious! Michael's description of it having power, structure, and finesse rings true to form for all his wines, broader feedback from those who have tasted it affirms this. “Robert Rende helped his father plant this vineyard (Blewitt Springs) back in 1969, and now lives there.
