Description

Cracking wine for the coin & a great intro to Timorasso. The texture here is fascinating. A phenolic layer adds pleasing grip and that oh so Italian silvery line of bitterness that cleans the palate so beautifully. The textural components wrap the mid-weight fruit that’s balanced with fine acid and modest alcohol. For an entry level wine there’s a fair bit of fun to be had hear with a great set of flavours in the mix. Yet another example of just why Timorasso is rapidly increasing in both production and popularity.

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

About Vigne Marina Coppi

“The wish to set off on this adventure in the wine-making world is entwined with the dream of bringing back to life the small and picturesque hillside village of Castellania, that is primarily known as the birthplace of my grandfather, Fausto Coppi. Here you will find that the uncontaminated environment, just a stone’s throw from the surrounding cities, has something unique to recount as part of our common heritage.

This is where my dream started with the certainty of being able to make excellent wines from that very same land and those very same vineyards that have always borne the very finest of grapes”.

Francesco Bellocchio

Vigne Marina Coppi came into existence in 2003 the year in which Francesco decided to come back to Caste

llania driven by a passion for cycling and a love for the beautiful landscapes. The vineyard is only a few hectares, the size of a typical family-run farm focussing on quality throughout the process.

They have plantings of Barbera, Nebbiolo, Croatina and the white Favorita and Timorasso traditional varieties of the region.

Timorasso has been cultivated in this area since the middle ages and is the hallmark of this corner of Piemonte.

Barbera, one of our favourite red varieties, has always been cultivated in the Tortonese area.

These wines are the result of modern, careful and respectful winemaking based on local knowledge of the peculiarities of the area. Productions is only about 25.000 bottles per year and can be called ‘’artisanal’’. They produce wines that reflect the personality and the strength of the land.

The human factor is the key to the philosophy of this winery and is only by understanding Francesco, a true viticulturist, that you can also understand the wines.

His wife Anna, mother of their three daughters, has been on his side since the first harvest in 2005 and contributes to the management of the property providing that value that only a woman can add. Giovanni and Marina, Francesco’s parents contribute to the workload, adding that wisdom and experience that you only achieve in the older age .

In the Vineyard

Our choice of indigenous and historical varieties demonstrates our strong attachment to the local tradition.

Whites

Timorasso is ancient white variety that has been cultivated for centuries in the area and is a major representative of the Tortonese area. His unique peculiarities have led to this variety to be considered amongst the greatest of Piemonte. It thrives in poor soils, well ventilated and well exposed sites and prefers altitudes above 350 meters.

Favorita, also known as Vermentino is an ubiquitous Mediterranean variety that can reach very high qualitative peaks, particularly if grown with the right exposure the right soils such as the Sant’Agata blue marns.

Reds

Barbera, queen amongst red varieties. is part our identity as it has always been grown on our hills. The lime rich marls of the Tortonian soil exalt the characteristics of this variety providing the grapes with a high concentration of antocians and a minerality and sapidity that is key to ageing.

Croatina , with its great personality has always been considered an historical variety in the Tortonese and provides a wealth of colour and tannin.

Massal Selection

The memories of the elderly people in the village have lead the selection of the varieties and the sites that have always been the best thanks to the exposition and the type of soil.

More recent agronomical and genetic knowledge has allowed us to identify the best clones and rootstocks while still privileging massal selection, that entails the identification of the best plants that have adapted to the specific conditions over decades and their subsequent propagation in nurseries.

This gives us a more varied genetic profile and therefore a more complex and complete profile and diversity of the grapes.

Viticultural Practices

The vines are trained with guyot and the density is close to 5000 per hectare.

At the forefront of our vineyard management is the uttermost respect for the environment.

We don’t use weed killers but control the growth through mechanical methods. We follow integrated pest management principles that allow us, through increasingly accurate weather forecasts, to reduce to a minimum our treatments.

We don’t use chemical fertilizers, only organic matter and manure. We also use green manure that entails growing specific crops such as leguminous and vetch that contain nitrogen fixing symbiotic bacteria. These crops are not harvested but ploughed under and incorporated in to the soil and contribute to humus formation.

The quality of wine is the result of a complex interaction between soil, weather and performance of the variety.

The correct agronomical choices such as training, density of plantings, pruning and hydric and nutritional balance allow the vines to express the best potential.

Terroir explains this concept in one word and is at the heart of the huge variety and originality of expressions.

Our hills can be described to have a continental climate, with a remarkable difference in day and night temperatures, very low precipitation and a favourable marine influence.

Our vineyards are in natural amphitheatre half way up the hill and well protected from the cold northern winds. This provides an ideal microclimate.

The soil formation can be traced back to the Tortonian and Serravallian eras: they are composed of lime rich sedimentary marls with strata of grey-blue Sant’ Agata marls that are around 30% sand , 55% clay and 15% lime. This complex and peculiar soil provides our wines with elegance and finesse.

In the Winery

Harvest is started only at the point of optimum maturity and after a careful selection the grapes are hand harvested and carried in small containers.

Gently pressed, cold settled, some solids retained, fermented cool in stainless, aged in stainless for 8-9 months with lees stirring to build and develop the wine and aged in bottle for 6 months prior to release.
