Description

There’s no secret that I love grower Champagne for its purity and personality.  When it comes to the big houses you usually have to get to their Vintage wines or special Cuvées to get to the exciting gear! Pol Roger, Louis Roederer, Krug and Dom Pérignon are where it’s at. Today we’ve got a splash of 2012 Pol Roger.

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

From the Winery

The Brut Vintage 2012 from Champagne Pol Roger is made from the traditional house vintage blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from 20 Grands and Premiers crus vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Produced only in limited quantities the Brut Vintage 2012 has been aged for 7 years in our cellars before being disgorged and released onto the market.

Vinification & Maturation

The must undergoes two débourbages (settlings), one at the press house immediatly after pressing and the second, a débourbage à froid, in stainless steel tanks at 6°C over a 24 hour period. A slow cool fermentation with the temperature kept under 18°C takes place in stainless steel with each variety and each village kept seperate. The wine undergoes a full malolactic-fermentation prior to final blending. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle at 9°C in the deepest Pol Roger cellars (33 metres below street level) where the wine is kept until it undergoes remuage (riddling) by hand, a rarity in Champagne nowadays. The very fine and persistent mousse for which Pol Roger is renowned owes much to these deep, cool and damp cellars.

96 Points

This rich, full-bodied Champagne is a classic from this producer. Its richness is emphasized by ripe Pinot Noir that dominates the blend, typical of the house style. A blend of grand and premier cru wines from across the Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs, this wine will age much further.

94 Points

Harmonious and straight with clarity and beauty to the wine. Cooked-apple and light honey aromas and flavors. Full body. Such balance and creaminess to the texture and weight. Lovely now.

93 Points

A cool, pure and distinctly airy nose is comprised by notes of green apple, spice, citrus and plenty of yeasty brioche nuances. The supporting mousse is generous and relatively fine on the wonderfully textured, rich and substantial flavors that deliver excellent complexity on the impressively long finish. This is already drinking very well though it clearly has the stuffing to age for another 10 years if a more mature fruit and flavor profile is your preference. Lovely stuff and fashioned in a full-flavored style.

Allen Meadows - Burghound

17.5 Points

60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay. Seven years on lees. Pale mid gold, with a fine bead. Caramel, brioche and subtle hazelnut notes, over fine, bright citrus fruit. Classic vintage-champagne style, with lovely, even, steady maturation. Fine mousse, crisp and elegant texture, with beautifully integrated, toasted brioche, cream and citrus finish. Lovely length. Class. 17.5/20 points.
