Deceptively pretty wine sitting around a lovely core of sour cherry fruit, wrapped with fine acid and defining dusty tannins.

Description

Elegant, mid-weight with a lovely balance, every piece of the puzzle in it’s place. Just like Isole e Olena’s Chianti classic there’s just a splash of a French variety, Merlot in this case. Where the Syrah in the Isole a roundness, the Merlot gives Poggio al Sole’s line and length.90% Sangiovese – 5% Canaiolo – 10% Merlot.

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

About Poggio al Sole

Poggio al Sole lies in the very heart of Tuscany, in the glorious countryside between Florence and Siena, between the towns of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti sits the Casasilia vineyard at approximately 400 m of altitude. Documents in the archives of the ancient abbey of Badia a Passignano nearby testify to the claim that wine and wine oil were produced on this estate as early as the 12th century.

Katharina and Giovanni Davaz arrived from Grison in Switzerland more than 30 years ago and found this almost abandoned estate and were able to acquire it . The Hill-top Property is surrounded by forests ( and mostly Antinori Vineyards ) and is one of the most stunning sites in the region. With great tenacity the entire estate was restored, Vineyards partially replanted and modernized. Today the estate is organically farmed and carbon-neutral due to a large solar installation.

Where in the World is Poggio al Sole?

Poggio al Sole lies in the very heart of Tuscany, in the glorious countryside between Florence and Siena, between the towns of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti.

Chianti is a sub-region of Tuscany. Other sub-regions include Montalcino and Montepuliciano. Like Montalcino, Chianti covers a large area and is relatively poorly defined in comparison to the likes of Barolo.

As is often the case with Italian wines there is confusion created by an ever changing general classification system. In this case we have wines two basic designation. The first, the Chianti Classico DOCG for which you see a black rooster on the label or neck tie which come from a defined area between Florence and Sienna. The Second Chianti DOCG or greater Chianti region that surrounds the Chianti Classico DOCG which in turn is broken up into seven sub-regions as seen in the second map below.

Isole e Olena – Is in the Chianti Classico DOCG, sub-region Barberino Val d’Elsa to the west of Radda
