Such Purity & Expression!

Hoddles Creek 1er Chardonnay 2018

Franco's at the top of his game. Making wine with balance between richness & juicy acid, delicacy & power, fruit & complexity!

Franco doesn’t aim to make a mineral acid driven style, he looks for the fruit to shine through. The fact that he gets great natural acidity at his Hoddles Creek Vineyard is just a bonus. So much going on in this wine. It’s brooding and waiting to pop. Have patience wait a year or two and you’ll have some epic Chardonnay to drink. Such Purity & Expression!

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

The 2018 vintage was warmer than usual, more along the lines of 2010 and 2013 for the Chardonnay. In the warmer years, the Upper Yarra handles the warmth really well. For the 2018, we have used a higher portion of new oak (still only 35%) and balance in second and third fill. The wine was aged in cask for 12 months, then spends 6 months in tank over winter to settle. Racked clean, then bottled without filtration, fining or stabilisation. The 2018 vintage in the Yarra Valley will go down as one of the classics. A long season, with enough rainfall to support growth without the need for irrigation.

This Chardonnay is sourced from our Top Paddock vineyard and is made only in the years deemed suitable for this label. The 2018 vintage was warmer than usual, more along the lines of 2010 and 2013 for the Chardonnay. This wine shows classic Upper Yarra Valley characters, some melon, struck match with a great finish. The only addition this wine sees is a small amount of sulphur at bottling. A wine to drink now or to cellar with confidence.

Franco’s at the top of his game producing cracking wines year in year out from an amazing site.

For those that haven’t had these wines before they represent some of the best value Pinot & Chardonnay you’ll find.

Hoddles Creek’s vineyards are in the cooler upper Yarra, the slopes of many of the sites are calf breaking.

The wines show a deft touch, balancing power and delicacy beautifully.

94 Points

There’s a little struck match and perhaps more spicy cedar oak this vintage, though it’s by no means excessive. Grapefruit and ripe lemon, but also nudging into some tropical fruit flavour too. There’s a fine powdery texture, intensity of acidity, some aniseed perfume, along with wheatgerm and ginger trailing on a juicy and tight finish. It’s a flavoursome iteration of this wonderful wine, and likely ready to drink earlier than some; no bad thing.
