Description

Deceptive, restraint and sophistication at play. Here it is in the texture, line and length of acid. A little chalky with an nice layer of phenolics. As it rolls around your palate it builds with excellent mid palate weight. Here’s a hot tip for you, one of the differences between good and great Chardonnay is mid-palate weight. This has it. Looks like a long slow ferment with my winemaking hat on. Fine delicious poised and pure. A little cold on first pour as it warmed and took a gasp of air the palate came together built and delivered! Lengthening and becoming finer. Exceptional value.

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

A mouth-watering wine with attractive florals and stony minerality and salinity. The palate is fresh and surprisingly juicy, with intense citrus and orchard fruit with hints of crunchy stone fruit. Bright acidity is balanced by a soft mouth feel and a long finish, which leaves you with impression of biting into to a slightly too-firm nectarine.

About Domaine Thierry Laffay

Established in 1978, this small high-quality under-the-radar Domaine has been managed by Thierry Laffay since 1985. Laffay farms 7 hectares of vineyards over seven excellent appellations.

We don’t have lot of info about Thierry, what we do have is a row of glasses full of tasty vino! That’s what we’re sticking with!

Laffay’s wines are steeped in the typicity of the terroir thanks to simplicity and limited handling. The Laffay wines display the taut, rocky and steely Chablis classism of yesteryear, not dissimilar to the wines of Vincent Dauvissat who I have been visiting annually since 1995

In the Vineyard

They are mostly organic citing that their viticultural practices are those of reasoned cultivation, lutte raisonnée, being scrupulously applied avoiding systematic treatments and intervening only in the event of a major disease risk. Vine age averages between 40 and
50 years, grapes are harvested by hand.

In the Winery

Indiginous yeasts commence fermentations; the wines are aged for a minimum of 9 months in stainless steel or enameled steel vats (3 small vats). After the alcoholic fermentation, the wines remain on the lees and resume malolactic fermentation the following spring.

I love the fact that Trimbach hold back there wines for so long. The freshness, combined with the development of this wine brings a lovely harmony and balance. 8 years on the acid of this bone-dry wine has resolved and the richness of the fruit has powered through. Fiano - A little bit of Italy that has made it's way to Australia! Fiano one of those Italian varieties that just seems to work in the warmer regions of Australia. It holds it's acid, giving the wines great texture and balance, the flavours from the skins are superb, spice and all things nice. It has just a slight silvery line of bitterness to finish, common to so many good Italian whites, which perfectly cleans the finish and marries it to food beautifully.

The name of this appellation comes from Mont de Lieu which marks the border between Burgundy and Champagne, illustrated by a marker stone dividing the two duchies which can be found on its summit. With a double exposure moving from south to southeast facing, this terroir benefits from a higher average temperature and more sunshine than the other Premiers Crus.

On the spectrum from elegant to bold 'Morgeot' is always on the richer side of Alex's wines. The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru has a tight, backward, stony bouquet; Alex Moreau mentioned that he strove to pick at the right time to keep a sense of strictness.
