Description

Nascetta – Italy’s answer to Gewurztraminer. Fragrant, spicy and fresh.

This is a fun, youthful wine that is drinking well now but could possibly benefit from a little more time to develop, allowing the fruit and underlying structure to better harmonise. Wonderful aromas come swinging out of the glass, with pops of pity citrus, yellow stone fruits, white blossoms and a line of saline minerality. The palate marries ripe, juicy fruit with a savoury lines of lees and spicy white pepper; gentle phenolics lend weight on the palate, signaling it as an excellent food wine. Good persistence through the palate, leaving a fine salty buzz on the finish.

This is always a standout white wine from Piedmont, and I found this hot-vintage release to be especially delicious and fun to drink. The Elvio Cogno 2020 Langhe Nascetta del Comune di Novello Anas-Cëtta is ripe and fruit-forward with stone fruit, preserved lemon and hints of saffron. The wine’s texture shows some pretty weight and lasting creaminess.

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

Nascetta also known as Anas-Cëtta is an old indigenous white grape variety that hails specifically from the Novello commune. Since the first limited vintage ‘Anas-Cëtta’ in 1994, Elvio Cogno winery has embraced their love for the land and traditions of the Langhe to produce a modern wine reminiscent of those produced and enjoyed in Novello by previous generations.

Referenced in old winemaking documents from around the late 19th century, this white wine has distinctive Mediterranean origins, with an elegance and intensity of flavour that characterise other great warmer-clime varieties, such as Vermentino (to which it might be related).

Fresh, gracious and light on its feet, with striking aromatic presence, this wine practically screams out for seafood, a succulent roast chicken, or a cheese platter at sunset.

About Elvio Cogno

The Elvio Cogno Winery stands at the top of the Bricco Ravera Hill in Novello, in the Piedmont territory of the Langhe. The farm occupies 11 hectares of land, all under vine. It has the unique feature that it is almost surrounded by forest (bordered at least) creating a unique, possibly slightly cooler more natural micro climate.

The Cogno family has been making wine for four generations, managing the vineyards with great care. They do not force the natural way of the vines, but cultivate low yields per hectare in respect of the biological balance of the vines. In Elvio Cogno’s wines today, we find the characteristics of history and tradition as Papà Elvio advised, and freshness and innovation that his daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore contribute. The style is traditional: organic vineyard management, extremely low yields, a long maceration time and ageing in large oak. Always looking for balance the wines have immediate appeal but of course the longer you spend with them the more they reveal their multifaceted structure. This is true for all their wines, not only the top cru‘s.
Organic and biodynamic principles are employed in the vineyard and winery.

Where in the World is Cogno?

The estate great vineyards are based in the Commune of Novello in the south-east of the Barolo region. Their prized vineyard, Ravera (not to be confused with Ravera di Monforte) is on the north-eastern boundary of the Commune.
