Forjas del Salnés ‘Leirana’ Albariño 2022

Albariño | Val do Salnés, Galicia

The gentler 2022 Leirana reflects a warmer year of rounder wines and slightly lower acidity. They are increasing the amount of oak, and eventually, this could end up being 100% in (used and large) foudres, but the wines don't show any oak. They blended all the wines before they are put in foudre, and they feel it results in better integration of the wine. This represents the Salnés region of Rías Baixas with the salty and tasty marine and granite twist. 40,000 bottles. There are two lots of th

A richer more immediately generous iteration than the 2021 yet with a delicacy and elegance. Perfumed fruit ripe gold apple a little lemon oil at play and a salty pop. Delicous long fine, supple. Well this had me thinking of the Nikolaihof’s 2013 Baumepresse Grüner. The refinement, development with freshness, harmony with subtlety and sense of togetherness from a clever élévage. Pretty, perfumed, musk and white flower on citrus oils. A complete palate, flowing, long and fine with transparency and beautifully weighted flavours, gently spiced with a leafy green herb and a fine earthiness. Dry with fine acid. The phenolics here are refined and layered. A ripping example of Grü

I’d add that this is development pre-bottling as a winemaking choice. For all the many great things that can be told about Giacosa’s red wines, it is the Arneis that maybe typifies the great qualities of Bruno Giacosa the man. In the early 1970’s, this was an indigenous variety almost entirely lost to the region’s obsession with red wines (at the time mainly Dolcetto) that was ‘rediscovered’ by Alfredo Currado of Vietti and Giacosa very shortly after. The two are almost solely responsible for Arneis’ current importance in the region, especially in Roer

The 2020 Vogelsang Grosse Lage is pure, deep and intense on the spectacularly fine, mineral and absolutely unique nose that reveals concentrated but elegant and spicy-mineral fruit with a coolish and herbal terroir expression. A show-stopping nose! On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, dense, rich and intense but also refined and vibrantly fresh Saar Riesling with a tight structure and a spectacularly long, refined and saline finish that reveals a serious tannin structure. Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2013

Pinot Noir | Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Champagne

“Surpassing even the 2012 and 2008, Philipponnat's 2013 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses looks to be the finest vintage of this cuvée in several decades, at least on first acquaintance. Deriving from only the six core parcels out of the 13 that make up the Clos des Goisses, it's a striking wine, evoking aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, Anjou pear, clear honey, bee pollen, stone fruit and iodine. Full-bodied, layered and vinous, its textural attack segues into a deep, concentrated and tight

Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé 2012

Pinot Noir | Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Champagne

2012 Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé “The just-released 2012 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé shares the vinous, textural profile of the regular Clos des Goisses in this vintage, offering up aromas of mirabelle plum, crisp orchard fruits, white flowers, frangipane and papaya. Full-bodied, broad and fleshy, it’s a rich, muscular Champagne of considerable depth and persistence.” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 95 Points AG 95 AK 97 JR 18
The 1997 Riesling Vinothek Severin Fass was aged for 25 years in a large, traditional oak cask (filtered, though not on the lees) and opens with an intense yet pure, fresh and spicy, finely oaky bouquet with a deep, mineral tone of crushed stones. On the palate, this is a very intense and complex Riesling slowly building up and revealing great finesse and balanced juiciness. The wine develops a sustainable, aromatic and structured finish with great finesse, lingering salinity and fine tannin gri

Château Grillet 2020

Viognier | Rhône Valley, Château Grillet

The perfume alone is enough to make your heart race! Château Grillet (pronounced Gree-yay) makes one of the world’s most sublime white wines from Viognier. It’s price is heading into the stratosphere. I loved playing with the Viognier at Yarra Yering, may have been from Grillet cuttings, may not ….. and was fortunate to drink my fair share of Grillet. For years there was never enough Viognier at YY to make an individual white wine. It was always co-fermented with Shiraz to make the Dr

Philipponnat Clos des Goisses L.V. 1997

Pinot Noir | Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Champagne

The latest release from Philipponnat's L.V. program, their late-disgorged ex-maison releases This year also sees the 1997 release of Philipponnat’s L.V. or Long Vieillissement i.e., ‘long aging’ project. It is widely accepted that the Clos des Goisses is one of the finest wines in Champagne for aging and needs at least 10-15 years to unveil its true majesty. “Gorgeous nutty nose, dark golden in colour but completely belying the freshness and racy energy within the glass.
