Giovanni Sordo Barolo Riserva ‘Parussi’ 2008

Sordo's Parussi always sits on the bolder side for the Cru, which it turns out has split soil types. Theirs being on soils more similar to those of Serralunga. The resulting structure shows in the wine. The 2008 is drinking beautifully, showing darker fruits and like the other 2008 Sordos seamless, with exceptional harmony and balance.
This is such a great opportunity to look at different Crus in a horizontal from one producer!

Superb! An excellent Villero. Complete, pure, elegant, refined, such harmony in its youth bodes well for a little something special with the passage of time. Wow! A sensational Rocche. At this early stage in its life it sit with harmony, together. Expressive, a long even palate, stunning tannins that caress. The perfume is intoxicating, faded flowers of Castiglione Falletto. A superb core of fruit of exceptional length.
Year in year out this is in the top 3 of Sordo 8 Barolo Crus. It looks like this year will be no different. Savoury, a little salty and earthy. This will be long lived.

Here’s a wine that it pays to know the inside story. Many of you know Sordo currently has 8 Cru wines with more in the pipeline. The two most recent additions have been their Monprivato and Villero. Although they have had worked with the vineyards and fruit for decades they haven’t bottled them individually. So where did the fruit end up? In 2010 it ended up right here in the Barolo Classico and it shows!

A wonderful expression of Serralunga, all of the tea, slate, graphite, exceptional quality tannins, with a presence and sophistication. The firm mouthfeel of seriously good Serralunga tannins. Again such a complete wine. The nose draws you in. Begging you to drink. A darkness and energy that is palpable.
Impressive gear. Precise, and pure, wearing the vineyard and commune on its sleeve. Superb fruit of depth and length.

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Monvigliero’ 2019
Nebbiolo | Verduno, Barolo
Greater complexity than Ravera at this early stage in its life. Florals, earthy, truffled layers on red fruits with classic roses and woody herbs at play. Hints of baking spice, it feels a little more relaxed at this stage compared to the Ravera.
Excellent tannins, fine, precise, long and even matching the fruit through the full length of the palate. Outstanding purity.

Juicy red fruits that heart shaped Ravera profile, the fruit start broader across the palate and tapering away. Supple refined tannins, long juicy acid with a pleasing tang. Again grape first, tight-knit and pure.
The most overtly acid of the Crus, it has loads more to come as the acid resolves with time and secondary development sees this relax and build generosity and complexity.

Powerful fruit, grape first rich with fine zippy acid. Tight and looking for time to fully resolve. Everything is in its place. Excellent length and depth.
Full round fruit shape from beginning to end. A little edge to the tannin and a fine pleasant bitter line to finish. Beautifully perfumed, fennel, a little anise, woody herbs and a light chocolate layer on a core of red and dark fruits.

The 2004 Riserva we see the parallels with the 2016, 2015 & 2008. Sucked one of these back beginning of April 2022. Cracked, decanted for around 3 hours, dranks over a couple. It just kept getting better and better in the glass, incredible harmony, those faded flowers of Castiglione Falletto, fine long tannins, perfectly balanced with flavours that lingered long after the last drop was gone. Excellent layering of secondary characters. Just superb!

It's fascinating the from one of Barolos Northern most Crus in Monvigliero, moving to one of the Southern most in Ravera from Novello we see two Crus that are more playful and expressive in their youth. Here we typically see supple tannins, oppulent red fruits with front to mid-palate attack. Again the metamorphosis only time can offer us really is something special.

Very recognisable again; the graphite and generous almost smoky black cherry/prune announces a Monvigliero. This is both expressive now, yet clearly very classy. Superb, the flint, the slate, the dark sour cherries, such length. Incredible wine. A hint of macerative, grape marc character, again energy, vibrancy. Nice florals. Tannins that almost remind me of a little whole bunch will resolve. Should be a fun evolution for this one. This has a wonderful personality.
